Hey Finn, how about a video about Killswitch Engage? Like, how they got so big, starting with Jesse, switching to Howard, then back to jesse (I personally prefer Howard way more even tho my favorite song by them is with Jesse as the singer). And how i guess they act as if their self titled album doesn't exist and they won't play any of the songs from it live because they consider the album an embarrassment. Which I disagree with, even if its not one of their best. I wasn't even aware of that, but saw it in an interview with Adam. But ya, I've heard you mention them in other videos and you seem to have a respect for them, but I don't ever hear you go in depth about them at all. Really all I can think of is you mentioning their song writing, how they have deeper lyrics. Idk. I'd like a video on them and how so many other bands latched on to their sound.

Great video Finn! There is A LOT I could touch on here, but I will keep this related to Jim Cherry. I agree Pulley is criminally underrated. Love their first three albums. Not only was Cherry pivotal in Strung Out and Pulley, but he had a lot to do with launching Bigwig's career which lead to them getting signed and putting out Unmerry Melodies. That being said, Bigwig is amazing and essential melodic skate punk that is definitely in the same vein as Strung Out. Slayer riffs meet Propagandhi especially on their third album, An Invitation To Tragedy.

Hey, Finn, have you considered doing videos like this one but centered around bands from other specific countries? Like, here in Mexico we're having some kind of pop-punk revival with bands touring all-year long all over the country... also back in the 2000's there were a few interesting bands from Japan. Specifically 'Ellegarden'. I think you might like their sound, around half of their songs are in English and the singer had a decent accent because he spent some time in the US.

My college roommate Jonah and I still discuss strung out to this day and I follow the band closely even now. He eventually worked media for AP and Fuse and such and I kept pushing Strung Out's later stuff but he couldn't get into it, but he loved the first couple of records. I definitely hear a difference after Twisted by Design although the EP that came after that still had a lot of that lighter flavor to it. I personally am a huge fan of Exile in Oblivion and have light the stuff they've been putting out for the new record but there is a clear disconnect in eras. I remember ordering Another Day in Paradise vinyl from Fat along with a Guns N Wankers record (another band I loved at the time), after hearing it in a 411 video and felt they were exactly what I was looking for in pop punk. I think part of what may have kept them from being bigger was the exact reason you note for what made them so good. They sounded different and in some ways cleaner than other bands at the time. People where loving the NoFX snotty vox which I think helped people get into other bands on Fat like early Propagandhi or even the gravelly Good Riddance sound made Strung Out sound perhaps too safe at the time. That stuff blew up later at which point them may have seemed like the older guys at the table. Sometimes doing something too soon can make you seem like dad rock by the time the aesthetic becomes big.

I remeber being in the midst of my Fat Wreck Chords/Epitaph period and wondering why these guys weren't more hyped than they were at the time? They were so clean and tight with all of their songs at a freaking mach 3 speed. I just turned 40 (completely validating the fact that the only people who still come to shows like these are effectively dinosaurs), but everytime I've ever played a track by any of those bands around millenial friends or co-workers, they always respond with surprise over the fact that they'd never been exposed to this genre... It's always a positive though. Still make it a point to run everyday, and this music still powers me through to the tune of roughly 4 miles per session... just hard not to still get hyped over this music, even in the 21st.

I think what didn’t help them either was their huge lack of support in their home country France and actually all around Europe. They pretty much gained their popularity at the Warped tour. Still hope they will come back strong !

+1 to "sad lyrics over poppy music." It's funny you think Strung Out were heshers as the people I knew who were really into them were the skaters who were also really, really, really into weed. Please do a "sad-boy" pop punk video as well as one on "80's revival" hardcore bands of the same period (Title Fight, Ceremony, etc.) that all sounded like New Order by their third album.

I was so shocked by CNCC's last album because I didn't care for them for all of my scene years. Then a couple years ago I heard some tracks off Get Lost, Find Yourself and I was really into it. I was at rock bottom in my life and songs like The Other Line and Playing Dead honestly made me feel a lot better. Hope they put out new music someday.

“Seein Red” and “Fight” are my favorite from Unwritten Law, with the latter being underrrated, although it has been in a few video game soundtracks. Also, Famous Last Words, Forever Came Calling, and My Ticket Home should’ve been bigger, especially My Ticket Home, since they were one of the originators, besides Ocean Grove, of nu metalcore.

I think Famous Last Words are still together. But yeah I agree. Maybe a reason they weren't bigger is because they were often overshadowed by other bands in the scene.

@@InkAndPoet I'm French and I have to admit that it is unfortunatly true. I mean we do have some rock bands but I can't realy name more than 3 great rock bands. When you're in a band in France , it is realy hard to succed and to earn anough money to leave from your music. This Is why most of the rock bands in France started their careir in another country or went to live in the us afteward. As a teenager I don't have any friends who listent to the same music as I do or even care about punk rock so if you want to start a band, it would be very hard to find members

lol "TRL-Core" I came up right when the whole skate punk thing was coming to an end, and I never really connected with it even though I was surrounded by it. It wasn't until pop punk started to blow up that I really finally connected with what was going on in "punk" Bands like The Movielife, Juliana Theory, Saves The Day and even stuff like The Get Up Kids, Rufio, Flogging Molly and New Found Glory are what really made me really get into that whole scene. Good video Finn!!

Strung Out we're pretty big in the early 2000s. Hell, they even did co headlining tour with Papa Roach (ewwwwww). They were playing big venues up until about 08'. Unwritten Law we're pretty good as well. They had that one album Elva that was sold everywhere (hello Target and obscure places).

My personal definitive pop punk bands that should have been bigger are Sugarcult and Allister. I actually bought a shirt from both of these bands in the current year cuz I’m a fucking weirdo. Sugarcult are one of my favorite bands of all time and if not in my top 10 definitely not far behind. My favorite album of theirs is actually Lights Out, the “darker and more mature one”, which I never found boring and always found to be the best showcase of their songwriting, but could kind of show them coming apart at the seams in a writing’s on the walls kind of way. Tim is a songwriter type in LA now who has co-writing credits on almost all of Neon Trees biggest hits and has even worked with straight up pop artists. I don’t like 5 Seconds Of Summer much at all but Calum has always been really quick to name drop Sugarcult as an influence in interviews and because of that he’s always been the most “he’s alright with me.” They once tweeted only a date, which some speculated was the release date of their long awaited new album, but just turned out to be the date of their at that point annual Christmas reunion show, and even that has stopped. If I had a genie wish to get one band back together it could seriously be Sugarcult. Well, maybe inactive pop punk band. I still really want new oasis, My Chemical Romance, and Gaslight Anthem material. Allister are seriously underrated. They’ve been back together since like 2010 or so releasing two new albums since then and a Best Of this year compiling the tracks from the two newer albums, re-recordings of all their pre-2010 material, and 4 new songs. It wouldn’t make even my top 20 albums of the year realistically but would be included in my extras sort of section along with something like The Xcerts 4 track EP from this year. Allister were massive in Japan, with Scott Murphy having a solo career in Japan featuring him singing in Japanese and covering Japanese pop songs, with it marketed as in posters and flyers made and printed and even videos uploaded to KZitem by Universal Music Japan as SCOTT MURPHY (EX-ALLISTER). Scott is also in a band with Takeshi Hosomi of ELLEGARDEN called MONOEYES, ELLEGARDEN is also one of my favorite bands ever as well pop punk bands, and I believe some members of Allister along with some members of Mest were in a band together after both came to their first or initial ends called The Get Go who were also mostly successful and mostly active in Japan. Scott also has a project with him and Rivers Cuomo of Weezer released exclusively in Japan and featuring them both singing in Japanese. I’m being dead fucking serious about that. He’s sort of legendary in the Japanese pop punk scene even being brought into produce the album of a Japanese pop punk band called Pop Disaster, and true pop punk dorks like me will definitely appreciate that band name. Anyway, Sugarcult and Allister!: please don’t let the shadows of these brilliant bands die.

Mest absolutely deserved to be bigger. Maverick did them dirty as a label and just basically gave up on them and the pop-punk genre in general. A couple other bands deserved way more exposure just based on talent alone are Sugarcult and Zebrahead. All 3 of these bands easily matched up with the big players of the 2nd wave of pop-punk like NFG, BFS and Simple Plan but just didn't get the push from their record labels they needed to get their faces out in front of the mainstream masses. A good barometer of how talented a band happens to be is how well they sell in Japan. If the band does well despite lack of label push and lack of money in general but still manages to sell well and gain major popularity in Japan you can bet it is because they actually have talent. These 3 bands fit that bill perfectly as they always sold better in Japan who didn't have the mainstream TV bias of just having to like whatever band was the flavor of the week on MTV.

Great video, thanks Finn! Any time you mention Strung Out I have to comment! They are so fucking amazing (coming out with a new album later this year), and in my opinion one of the most underrated bands in any rock genre. Every one of them is amazingly talented, and if you have any love for music with instruments of any kind you absolutely have to check them out. Even their newer stuff is awesome. Listen to “Magnolia” from their 2015 album Transmission Alpha Delta, and you’ll become an instant fan!
