I sort of agree with it - they weren't particularly more inspired or emotive in their first few albums, they just wrote slow, boring droning songs. Their music isn't much more inspired now, but at least it now has that overt wannabe-anthem sound that stops you from falling asleep. That being said, I still think most of the music they've released from their last two albums has been shit too.

All I hear when I hear this song is a commercial jingle. Something to be played on cell phone ads or Target ads or something. The words don't matter, what matters is the big booming drop with the repetition of "I want something just like this!" so that it fits in literally every commercial ever. Like even when I hear the "chorus" I have images of cellphones rotating on top of a pink kaleidoscope pattern in my head. And I don't even watch TV.

Coldplay is functional music which explains their longevity... they are non-offensive and can easily be used as background music in malls, advertisements or long drives. Any situation where you don't have to listen closely to the music. They're the rock equivalent of Enya.
@ChaosBladewing

While I don't think you're incorrect, I do still think there is more to it than that. Corporate has for decades been trying to hammer out the formula for the perfectly marketable, long-lasting, advertisement-churning band to little success. Trends alone can swallow bands like that whole. Coldplay however does seem to be just genuine enough while being able to keep a finger of the pulse of pop music.

Basically. It's mood music that only stands out by having just enough of an edge (mostly through Chris Martin's fairly unique vocals) to seem more profound than it actually is. It helps that the mood they're going for is usually understated melancholy or serenity and vague longing that lends itself to a broad variety of situations and emotions, from "I'm thinking about my crush" to "I just hit traffic and now I'm bored and frustrated and wish I was home already". It's perfect radio music. (That being said I actually really like Coldplay and Something Just Like This is probably the first thing they've ever done that I have absolutely no use for at all. I blame the #selfie douches for that.)

i wouldn't say perfect radio music - maybe good for streaming and the dentist, but it doesn't have the liveliness and bounce i associate with radio music i'm of the opinion that radio music shouldn't be relaxing - it should be fun, but not blasting like it is in EDM - funky, it should be funky

While we're talking about bands and artists who have managed to maintain relevance for over a decade, how the fuck is Rihanna still relevant? I say this as a bit of a Rihanna apologist, but she had her first hit in 2005 with "Pon de Replay" and she has been a juggernaut ever since. When she released "Umbrella", her career skyrocketed and it never hit a lull period. Nobody lasts this long! I thought that she would have the staying power of other female R&B singers of the mid-2000s like Ashanti or Ciara, where they would have a few hits over the course of two to three years, then fade into obscurity. But Rihanna has always been here. She refuses to go away. Even Britney Spears faded away by the turn of the decade. How has Rihanna managed to stay relevant for this long. The only reasons I can think of are her omnipresence and her refusal to take a break, and her elasticity and range in genre. Plus, her sultry, Carribean contralto probably makes her one of the most distinct vocalists in pop music.

So... five years later, and I've come to the conclusion that this is prime music for screensaver backgrounds -- in a good way. I love music that I can close my eyes and just visualize things to, and the imagery that this song evokes is, like, panning helicopter shots of landscapes and scenery... when the drop comes in, that's something like a mountain range, or an ocean coastline... and the very final build and drop, it's like you take off from Earth and head into space to see things like the surface of the sun, or asteroids and comets, or galaxies. It's chillingly good to feel that guitar kick in and the goosebumps just go down my spine.

There's almost no chance of that happening. Saying hip hop is the new rock and roll is cliche at this point but that's because it's the truth. Every hit rock song of the last decade or so has gained popularity either by being a nostalgic throwback to old sounds in rock music or by being so commercialized and bland that it's barely even rock music anymore. Interesting rock music will never be relevant again, but the good thing is that rock music will still be good and interesting in the underground

It would be interesting to hear Todd on that, but he's been strictly about reviewing the Hot 100 pop hits since the start. As he once described, the Hot 100 are the songs that get listened to and are liked the most in the mainstream, they kind of take his priority (other than One Hit Wonderland) so unless those rock charts have crossover success, I doubt Todd would be looking at them. However, if the hits are getting as dull and empty as he suggests, he might finally have to start looking for material elsewhere.

Achilles is explicitly about gold. Gold surrounds his entire story. The Trojan War itself was started due to the throwing of the Golden Apple of Discord. And the war had the opportunity to stop with the offering of gold to Achilles matching the weight of Hector's body. It took all of King Priam's treasury to do so, plus the offering of Polyxena's golden bracelets. But Achilles refused the offering and through his actions came the war itself.

Kind of Space-y It's not about accuracy, it's about how almost everything he stated are either only tangentially/barely related. Other than Hercules with his "gifts"(he really only had one unless gifts is supposed to be presents(which would be stupid)) nothing he said are central/well known themes in any of the myths he mentioned. Achilles story barely had anything to do with gold, batmans fists are something virtually anybody can get with hard work, and the only thing i can think of about spider man that's related to control in any special way is how he LOST control to venom and barely managed to get it back. And hell even saying "Hercules and his gifts" is kinda stupid because it's ridiculously vague.

It's pretty clear they got Achilles mixed up with King Midas, somehow. Sorry, but no. Achilles does not have an explicit link with gold. The war had no opportunity to stop with the offering of gold to Achilles. It had a chance to stop with the fight between Menelaos and Paris. Achilles refusing Priamos' gift had to do with Hektor's body, and the war - begun by Agamemnon and Menelaos, and by the refusal of Paris to return Helena and her gold - would not have stopped if Achilles had accepted. I mean, yes, Achilles - not the Trojan War specifically, but Achilles - is offered gold (and gifts) several times in the Iliad, but the fact that it's gold is just because gold is precious. You could also have said: "Achilles and his girl" (would make more sense), "Achilles and his horses" (they even speak one time and they are clearly associated with him), "Achilles and his friend" (friendship is obviously one of the most important themes in the Iliad, and the reason he trades his life for fame) or "Achilles and the questioning of heroic ideals by undermining the conventions of the traditional format of the epic and the clever play with motifs". I'm also wondering about Hercules btw. What about his gifts? Is his gift that he has a god as a parent? His name, given to him by Hera's priests? The gift of madness that made him kill his children and wife? The gift of the centaur-blood cloak? He's superstrong, yeah, but it's not so much a gift as a genetic component that all demigods seem to have.

Earlier songs of Coldplay had a point. Yellow described positive symbolic descriptions of yellow such as loyalty, honor, joy and happiness which is described in the song and the emotion that people can be feeling is being thankful for what a person is doing even if in the lyrics when he says "I bleed myself dry" may seem overboard. Speed of sound is about intrigue about things you do or do not understand which triggers emotions of excitement intrigue and positive confusion. Fix you is mainly helping someone recover from a mistake that person made or an incident that happened to them which the emotions are hope or happiness for trying to help someone. Clocks is about confusion that you are still alive after a life or death scenario and at the end the focus is going back home yourself and helping someone else get home to emphasizing confusion and relief.

Classicist in the house! While clearly the lyrics of the first verse are really just there to rhyme, Achilles has some sort of association with gold. In The Iliad, towards the very beginning, Achilles has a conflict with Agamemnon after Agamemnon takes a woman Achilles had been given as a spoil of war. Achilles gets royally pissed, and yells at Agamemnon about how he, as the head commander, gets way too much of the rewards of war. Gold, jewels, land, women, and the lower commanders and regular soldiers get very little. After this, Achilles storms off and refuses to fight in the war for a long time. This has drastic repercussions later on, but suffice it to say the line isn't totally grasping at straws.

I think the thing that pisses me off about the song "Paris" is that there is NOTHING Parisian about it - not the music itself nor the lyrics. Paris has been the birthplace of some of the most influential artists and movements in modern culture, and instead of taking inspiration from that, the Chainsmokers make a fucking EDM song about well-off American kids on vacation? If they wanted to channel the beauty and romanticism of Paris, they should've at least make the song's sound or its lyrics reflect that!
