so i actually have this toaster. well my grandma does. and at first i thought it was a total joke but here's what i will say. i agree that it's terrible for the bun, but for the hot dog it does work. i personally like my hotdogs blistered and crisp so i just put it on for a full cycle, then flip it over and do it again. so i wouldnt say it works for making your whole nice hotdog and bun in one push. but i do like the way the hotdogs come out after 2 cycles in there. and the burnt plastic smell does go away just like with any new toaster or appliance

I grew up with one of these, and it seems like my older version cooks the hot dogs a lot better, the bun is more evenly toasted along the entire inside of the bun, and the hot dogs get nice and cooked to the point that they get slightly burnt and bubbled, like you would get from cooking them over a campfire. Delicious and really easy.

Is there a chance that the one you grew up with was sold by Hammacher Schlemmer, the company that specialises in sort of odd stuff? The Hammacher Schlemmer version had a metal casing and was generally of higher quality than the one that Emmy bought at Best Buy.
@Firesora
7 жыл бұрын
It might be, it's called a "Hot Diggity Dogger" but I'm not sure if its by that company. However it is fully metal and likely of higher quality in general, I've seen the one Emmy has purchased before and it retailed at about $30 CAD (not sure what the US price would be). Mine is over 30 years old at this point though and was purchased before I was born so I don't know too much about it otherwise.

*FarfalleAlfredo* I disagree, even if you can use the phrase legally, doesn't mean you should. If someone were to search "Does this thing really work?" The best and easiest way I have found to cook 2 hot dogs; 1) fold up paper towels to form a pad on a microwave safe plate ) lay another paper towel across the top to catch splatter 3) I cook them on high for just under 2 minutes though cooking times will vary with different wattage rated microwaves 4) remove promptly & dispose of the paper towels. The paper towels absorb the fat & juices and the one overlayed on top keeps the inside of the microwave clean. I prefer to not toast the bun as commercially available buns tend to easily fall apart with too much handling and I prefer an intact bun to best retain the condiments. I prefer this cooking method to boiling as it seems to me to be quicker and simpler while still providing the optimum texture and thorough cooking as you have described. Kudos on the good taste regarding the Nathan's all beef ones, they are my favorite. I cringe when I see people using the cheapies, it makes me think that is why hot dogs get a bad rap. I also use Heinz ketchup and DILL relish (no sweet pickles EVER!). I switch around mustards, lately I have been using Griffin's which is produced regionally and is a typical yellow with comparable flavor & consistency to bigger name brands at a much lower price. And it is regional to me so I like to buy locally if possible. Sometimes I switch around to the various varieties of Woeber's, or another yellow such as Plochman's, or various brown deli types. I tend to settle back to Griffin's. But always Heinz ketchup and always dill relish.

The smell is typical when you have a new heating element.. I have the hotdog toaster, and I found it's just fun for the kids to use. What you want to get is a hotdog "Roller-grill" like they have in convenience stores.. They make mini-versions for home use and there is just something magical about a roller-dog. Emma not sure if anyone said this but with new toasters and such always run them a couple of times before putting food in them. It actually gets rid of that new kind of plastic burn smell and any sort of little dust practicals, etc from parts to making, to buying off the shelves? Plus you can make sure it works etc. My ex husband who worked in a polymer plant making the plastic pellets had this tour because the plant was the first process in making a product, of course those pellets go out to others who then produce plastic caps on up to parts for cars and so forth. The tour we took, I remember the woman saying that as a tip? Because finished products do sit in warehouses and all that for a good while and that's why you want to give them test runs, you can even use compressed air to blow out the appliances, warm day extension cord and sit outside, just watch it. And best part no burning stinky smell. hope that helps?

Splat! I love my hot dogs with a toasted or grilled outside and juicy center, too! Steamed buns are the way to go as well! We used to have a hot dog cooker when I was a kid that had metal pointy ends on each side and you would shove the dog onto each point and then plug it in and it would kind of like Frankenstein your hot dog. The ends were always crispy and the middles were just warm. It could cook a package of hotdogs all at once. It was quite odd but it was pre-microwave days (1970's) and was an alternative to boiling the dogs. Nothing like an electrocuted hotdog to make you appreciate summertime and the charcoal grill! I wish I could remember the name of that weird contraption. If I remember correctly, I think it caught on fire and we had to throw it in the trash but it sure was fun!

Before using new appliances you always need to let it run once without food in it. So that the plastic and protection sprays completely "burn" away. Afterwards it shouldn't smell like burned plastic and is safe for food. I thought it'd say so in the manual (it always does here in Germany.)

I bought one of those just like you did... not being able to resist getting one to try it out. It's been living in my basement since. The smell/smoke on first heat up of the heating element is just the extremely thin protective coating applied to the heating elements upon manufacture so they don't rust in storage. It's non-toxic and just smells bad, but doesn't harm anything. On the second use, the smell should be pretty much gone.

My hotdog toppings of choice are. After I cook them, I wrap a piece of precooked bacon around my hotdogs, then use, pepperjack cheese, mayo, yum-yum sauce, and diced onions.

I have a hot dog toaster (with Snoopy on it) and definitely recommend it. It works very well with cooking the hot dog completely with crust (like a BBQ) but sounds like you need to increase the cook settings (dial on the side). Did you wash all the parts before using for the first time? It shouldn't have a plastic smell or maybe your machine was defective.

My parents had one of these when I was a kid- it was all metal and worked wonders! The bun slot was actually more bun shaped (think a “B” shape instead of the “D” shape on this one) and it cooked the buns to perfection (I like mine toasted like on a griddle!). The dogs were always perfect. I think this is a cheap modern knock-off!

I used to cut my hot dog lengthwise and pan sear, you get that little bit of char and crispy texture. I also like buns softer sometimes but don’t have a steamer, I use the toaster oven for a short bit just to crisp the edges but keep the bun soft-ish. They should invent a hot dog and bun steamer!

Thanks for the review 👍 Was going to buy one but was hesitant about the cooking of the dogs and toasting the bun, saved me $25- and taxes 👍

I have an older version of this product called a Hot Diggity Dogger. It seems to cook a bit hotter and puts some charing on the dogs. The buns come out darker too, like toast.

I'm a hamburger kind of gal, but had to watch you review this Emmy because it looked so so darn interesting! Lol. I think it's more gimmicky than anything.

I got this for father's day. I toast my Nathan's (best hotdogs) twice for normal size, 3x for the 1/4 pounders - and they are perfect. I lay a bun across the top of the unit instead of down inside the bun chamber. The version of the toaster we got was $17, lol for that this thing is close to "sliced bread" status.

How long was the cooking process? 2 min, 4 min, etc? Do you think if you cooked it for longer it would either burn or perhaps 'cook better'?

We have this toaster (a random gift that i thought we'd never actually use) and my son loves it. I make sure to situate the bun to that its not touching the sides and i give the hot dogs a second toasting (hebrew national are the best in my opinion). If you give the doggies a few extra minutes it actually chars them up nicely.

Emmy, I love the fact that you have used Nathan's Beef Franks to test out your new product. They do make great hot dogs. As far as the issue of using ketchup is concerned, to each his own. I too enjoy it and all the standard toppings on my dogs too. Great job on this one. 😊😀
