Hello Duncan. I got a bit adventurous with this dissolve. Made the picture almost double the length for a pop up book I am making. It was a bit tricky to do that as I added more slots and had to cut away as much as the model allowed me. But it worked with a few modifications to the tabs and frame. Now that I`ve done a rought model I can get on with the actual page. Thanks for the great tutorials. I have your book which has taught me the important basics of pop ups. Thanks a bunch!

Oh man i have been studying popups now for year, and finally think i got hang of the wery basics of using v-fold to make the base mechanism and stacking my own design atop of it. I feel like the next level would be to combine the mechanisms to create some sort of diorama that is based on 2 or even 3 separate individual mechanisms. Like that kip truck or the old computer which i think had this mechanidm in it. My wish would be, to see a tutorial video of combining specifically. Like how to combine 2 mechanics like a v fold and then pulltab to make more interactive popups that have more layers in them. or something like that.
@thepop-upchannel4919
4 жыл бұрын
You could try looking at Tutorials 49 and 57, they both combine mechanisms and movement. Tutorials 40 and 41 give a lot of examples of designs many of which are made by combining mechanisms - the tutorials mention which mechanisms are being combined.

Well, I finally got my example to work. My main problem, and this also applies to the other type of dissolve, was the thickness of the paper I was using. Trying to build this mechanic with regular A4 paper (working with what was available), as I did with all other examples, didn't work at all. So maybe, if yours is not working, this might be something to pay attention to.
@thepop-upchannel4919

Yes, whatever you make these things with it needs to be rigid. If you're working very small you can often just use paper but normally you will need to use card. For most of these tutorials I use photocopy card which is 160 gsm.

How do I do this in inches? I have a scoring board to help me make the lines, but I’m having trouble measuring this out. And how do I scale it up and down for a larger/smaller card?
@thepop-upchannel4919

You could make it using half an inch for one centimetre. It's not exact but it's near enough.

This is a difficult mechanism to make. You will need to make it with card not paper. You will also need to measure very accurately, and cut all the slits with a very sharp craft knife/scalpel. I think the measurements are explained pretty clearly in the video, they are :- For the base - Height 15 cm. Length 15.5 cm. For the moving piece - Height 11 cm + 1 more cm for the two tabs. Length 18.5 cm.

My dissolve pop up isn't working. Something gets jammed on the top. It works mainly if I keep the pull tab extremely steady while I make the dissolve. So frustrating.
@thepop-upchannel4919
Жыл бұрын
This is a difficult mechanism. The cutting has to be extremely precise, no jagged edges. Sometimes it starts to work more smoothly if you can operate it a few times and then any little snags get smoothed off. Otherwise all I can suggest is that you look very carefully and see where exactly it is getting stuck, then (hopefully) you can solve the problem.

@The Pop-Up Channel Thank you so much for your reply. Maybe it has something to do with the paper I used. The paper thickness was 250 grams.
@thepop-upchannel4919
Жыл бұрын
That's certainly a possibility. It's tricky as the whole thing needs to be rigid without being thick! Maybe try making it with 160 gsm and then reenforce the whole thing with an extra layer around the dges out of the way of the moving parts (it's explained from 11.00)..

Hi I spent ages following the instructions and getting the measurements and cuts exact, but when it comes to putting it together, you completely lose me, I can't understand or see what you are doing,I read the comments and no one else seems to have a problem, so I guess Im just a bit dense, I feel really disheartened now.
@thepop-upchannel4919
3 жыл бұрын
Hopefully it's fairly clear at 6.09 in the video. The base (red piece) has been cut so that it has a series of "fingers" and a slot. The moving piece (green) has been cut so that it has a series of slits and two tabs. One tab goes through the slot in the red piece - the "fingers" are pushed through the slits. The other tab goes behind the red piece and then a piece of tape is used to fix the end of the fingers to the main body of the red piece...... It is a tricky mechanism - I'm sorry to hear that you're having difficulty - maybe you know someone else who could have a look as well, sometimes "a fresh pair of eyes" can see things a bit differently.
