Very Nice Explanation. I believe another aspect of the poem is that it provide the criticism of the contemporary life as well.

I think the more interesting way to look at the bible line is to put it next to "and on her chest, a sparkling cross she wore, which jews might kiss and infidels might adore." It seems to suggest that religion is simply decorative to Belinda.

because you can take 'sparkling' along with all the light imagery used for belinda, it's about superficiality. Also I think you skipped over the fact that Jews would kiss it because it's on her chest!

Exactly people are failing to understand this. if its so obvious for this lady then i think she is already a scholar and she shouldn't visit the site rather make her own

Lol that woman is sexist! 6:35 she thinks that all women leave a mess on their dressing table. Some women are neat, some not. It's a personality type thing, not a sex thing.

You're such a caricature and professional offense taker. Is that really the one comment you have about this video? Get a life.

It's important to consider the context. This is Pope's poetic narrative speaker observing with tongue in cheek the foibles and vanities of 17th-century fashionable ladies, of fops, of entitled snuff-taking barons, of political power brokers, and so on. To criticize the scholar for exploring that world for us is to mistake her historical and literary insights for personal commentary on the nature of men and women. When she speaks of the proclivities of "women" around 6:35, try to allow that she was speaking of women as described in the poem.
