Way of Kings!!! I’m finishing up Oathbringer today and am absolutely loving this series 😍 I just read The Song of Achilles and really enjoyed it! Circe was just okay for me. I’ve never read any sort of Greek mythology and both made sense to me! I really want to read Robin Hobb, I’ve been seeing so many people talking about her books lately and am feeling a “tickle” too, haha. Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom were both 5 stars for me this year!! Also loved The Housemaid, not great literature but a fast paced, bingeable thriller for sure. So many others here on my TBR as well! 😊

Enthusiatic ‘Read Now’: Robin Hobb (worth the pages and then some), Becky Chambers (read anything by her-I think the series starting with Long Way to an Angry Planet is genius), Martha Wells (great on audio!), Libba Bray, Station Eleven, Lord of the rings, Jade city, This is how you lose the time war. Enthusiatic ‘Don’t Read These’: Madeline Miller (dry for me, I don’t know greek myths that well), Cassandra Claire (not worth it), Sarah J mass (worth it, but she’s a bully and I can’t read her anymore), Night Circus (fun but forgettable), Leviathan wakes (watch the TV show, book 1 is good, but my ‘can’t remember details brain’ would have needed to go right into book 2), Agatha Christie, Secret history (not the masterpiece people claim it to be), No exit (I gave it 1 star - sexist, misogynistic crap - it enraged me)

WOWWW thank you so much for the detailed explanations for why I should or shouldn't read these books! It seems like we have similar taste as I'm getting to know you a bit better through the regular comments, etc. so it's really insightful for me. 💛 Sidenote: I am planning to pick up Firekeeper's Daughter next month & I'll find you to discuss it when I'm finished! You have me really excited to read Boulley's work!

I am currently finishing up the 2nd book in the Expanse series. It's really good and moves quickly. It's not hard scifi so you don't feel like you're drowning in technical talk. It think it's a great place to start in the genre. You should definitely pick it up. "A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet" was great too.

You have a shocking number of books physically that you've never read, I'm jealous! As far as the list goes, you've got some bangers on there that differ wildly in prose style and era, I have no idea what your tastes are but I'd recommend as starters for each genre: Fantasy: Sanderson - his prose is clear as glass and his books are like blockbuster movies with no frills YA Fantasy: I have absolutely no idea, I'm not even close to the target audience for that. SCI FI: Project Hail Mary is well regarded as the best of his books, worth a shot. Mystery/Thriller: You can't go wrong with Agatha Christie's ATTWK, older book but always a thrilling read. Horror: You said any Stephen King, so I'll always recommend Salem's Lot as a shorter intro to his writing. Its a classic and a great horror book. Hope this helped, good luck with all the reading!

I do have quite a few books on my shelves that I haven't read yet 😅 And this was only part one.... hahah - I love Sanderson! Your explanation of his writing style is spot on! I just need to continue on with the Mistborn series. Idk why I keep putting it off. I adored the first one. I also loved Elantris. - I'm definitely moving away from the YA genre in general. Trying to decide if the books that I own and haven't read yet are worth it at this point. Those books have been on my shelves for yearsss. It might be time to donate them to my local library. haha - I'll give Project Hail Mary a try! I think it would be a good introduction in the science fiction genre since I haven't read many sci-fi books. - I feel like I HAVE to read Agatha Christie because she helped lay the framework for mystery books! - I've read a few of Stephen King's works (It, The Long Walk, The Shining, Carrie) and loved them so much that I decided to start from the beginning and continue reading his books chronologically in publication order. That will be a longggg project! I read Carrie this month & will pick up Salem's Lot next month. The goal is to read one of his books each month. Thanks for the in-depth comment! 💛

I'm actually doing the opposite with the Madeleine Miller books and reading them first THEN going back and rereading the Iliad and the Odyssey. Since I already read them a million years ago, I'm thinking that reading these books will change the way I reread the ancient ones and give me a new perspective on some of the stories they tell.

I started listening to The Troop and got just barely into the part where the boys are starting out on their own. It started feeling Lord of the Flies, so I picked up a different audiobook I have waiting. I didn’t realize it was a modern day Lord of the Flies when I checked it out. Thanks for the heads up. I don’t mind skipping it. I think I am only like 15% into it or something. So don’t take this as a vote for you. I just didn’t want a Lord of the Flies retelling right now. House of Leaves was a fun mental experiment read. I didn’t find anything horrific in it. It did remind me of some of the books I read for grad school, which for me is why I call it a fun mental experiment kind of book.

Yeahhhh Lord of the Flies was not for me. 🥴 However, I am still intrigued with The Troop because everyone says it's one of the best body horror books out there (which is a subgenre I am interested in). Maybe I'll read it in October! A fun mental experiment sounds wonderful! I just need to carve out the time to read it! I feel like it's one of those books that I solely need to focus on. Like only read that book and nothing else until I finish it. I want to fully be immersed in it!

I too haven't read many of these. I am taking forever to get to The Way of Kings, need to read era 2 of Mistborn. Have read Jade City or Robin Hobb. I have read most of the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. I think it is a series that gets better book by book and you might enjoy it if you like paranormal stories. I loved the Night Circus, but it just drew me in. I would say try a chapter. The Lord of the Rings might be enjoyable on audiobook. I read the series over the course of three years without audiobook. I found i did enjoy the writing. I feel like it has the Bible reading kind of vibe to it, like it has songs, poetry. ❤

I think I will do an "immersive" read with LOTR where I'll read it physically while listening to the audiobook at the same time. That's how I read The Hobbit & it was a wonderful experience. The voice actors sing the songs and everything. It's pretty cool. 💛 Seems like you really enjoy fantasy!! I appreciate your thoughts on those books! I will try a chapter of The Night Circus and see if the writing style is for me.

I was a different reader when I read it, but still think of it very fondly: Circe. Read that! Most of those fantasy books I also have yet to read. I remember really enjoying the Night Circus at first....then feeling like it didn't go anywhere. Misery and Pet Semetary are must reads. I thought Salem's Lot was boriiiing. Oh! and Doctor Sleep was a fave. (though you do need to read the Shining first) I hated the Deep, but enjoyed the Troop. It is body-horror heavy, and more disgusting than scary. Just depends if you are into that. I loved Dowry of blood, but you don't need to read Camilla or Dracula to appreciate it. I attempted house of leaves....and got bored and gave up 50 pages in. I may re-attempt it at some point. Those are just my thoughts!
