Probably my favourite PT song.
Explanation of the intricate part, from a post by Gavin himself, in DrummerWorld:
"It starts with a guitar in 5/8 and then I play in 7/8 with the bass drum & snare drum - on top of that I play a dotted 8th note on the ride cymbal. The bass joins in with a pattern in 7/8 (chords change every 4 bars) and the keys and guitars join in the dotted 8th note. Eventually that dotted 8th becomes an 8th note in 12/8 as we modulate into a different feel. Make sense?"
Basically he plays a 7/8 time signature with his left hand (snare) and right foot (kick) and a 6/8 (or 12/8 if you want) with his right hand on the ride bell. The guitar follows the right hand with its 6/8 pattern, ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta, while the bass goes with the snare. The fact that the two time signatures are different means that every beat on the snare will be 1/8 late with respect to the right hand because one is 7/8 and the other is 6/8, but after 6 bars eventually the gap will be 0 again.
