I bought a 2000 996 Cab 6M in 2018 at $19000. It was heavily optioned and had 67000 miles. I put about $7000 into it. I drove it for 3 years and put 30,000 miles on it. I sold it for $26000...even money. I then bought a 31k mile car-lower optioned for $28000 all-in. It already worth more. I think anyone who drives one versus the 997 will prefer the 996- I do and I have driven several 997s. I will never own one. These cars are great value and once you can get over the stigma of the 996, it is the best 900 series car out there.

The 996s that are probably eventually going to set themselves apart are the 1999 Carrera 2s with lots of options. Cable throttle, higher build quality, hand-built in the 993 factory, fairly rare (~2500 examples made for USA w/ cable throttle for example). Plenty of rare options out there, like 408, XAA, 375/376, and in Europe X51.

I follow your videos with keen interest. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the significant increase but the market can go both ways. In every analysis the 996 C4S with the X51 package are overlooked. These are rare, powerful and great fun to drive. What’s the market value of a fully sorted (including IMS, clutch, etc.) 2004 C4S w/ X51 pkg? Thanks for all the great videos.
@fourwheeltrader
2 жыл бұрын
It's great to hear that you like the videos. If i recall correctly, there are no C4S with the X51 included in the data so it's difficult for me to comment on that specific option. Also, a lot depends on the mileage. The most expensive 996 C4S (manual) for which it's explicitly stated the IMS issue is fixed has a price of 63k with 25k miles. The next one for which the IMS issue is fixed has an asking price of 45k with 56k miles.

Fun to drive and I’m not interested in selling but never say never. I also own a 2015 991.1 911 S Cabrio with 19K miles and it too has appreciated in the two years I’ve owned it. Your videos and information are so interesting. Whatever brand you discuss your videos are fun to watch. Randy, appreciate your comments. BaT is fun to watch. I keep thinking I might find something special there but it’s a tough market. By the way, the local Jacksonville Porsche dealer has asked me to sell my cars several times. When I go there, there is definitely a shortage of cars. They make money on turnover.

I have watched your videos about the 997 and both 996, awesome summarized! I wonder if buying a 996 is worth it now, what would you recommend? Currently there are just a few 996 Carrera 4S. One at 48k € with around 90k km, one at 52k € with around 60k km, one at 37k € with around 120k km. Assuming the condition is (nearly) the same (for its km), which one would you recommend or would you say it is too expensive at the moment to buy a 4CS in general? Is it realistic that these prices will be stable for the next few years or might they decrease more than where they are now? Thank you for your expertise!

DAMMIT! I want one so damn badly. Curse my young age. Everything is getting so damn expensive. I started college fresh out of high school in engineering because I want good cars. I was scheming to get a 996. I just graduated and have student debts but if I play my cards right, I can pay off all my debt by this time next year.... I am so mad that these prices wont go down. Unlike all the people in their 30s+, I NEVER ONCE had a chance at a "cheap rear engined porsche"... no 356's in the 80s, no 911's in the 1990s or 2000s, no cheap ass 996's in the mid 2010's, I just want a manual porsche and its so hard for us young people to get it. I might just work in a fancy resturant after working my 9-5 to get my money up. I want this so bad yall dont even understand how its like to be this downbad for the last 20 years. In 2005 dad brought home grand turismo 4 and I was hooked... Sorry, just venting :"(

I wonder what a manual 2003 996.1 Targa (silver/black) with under 50k miles and all needed services (RMS, IMS, temp sensor, new clutch, etc. addressed) is worth? Near $40..$43k? The Targa's are among the rarest of the normally aspirated 996's across the board. In 2003, 1812 were made and 450 or so made it to the US. Granted, the 996.2 2004/05 Targa worldwide production was even lower at 512 and 139 respectively...so those examples are about as rare as hens teeth.

I mean, with the shortage in cars in general due to the pandemic, which seems to be backed up until sometime next year or even later, all car prices went up. That has to be factored in as it will ultimately be solved thus prices will likely drop by a significant margin merely because the market offers will increase once the shortage is over.

The auction sites like BaT and PCM are skewing the prices...the auctions seem to be dominated by investors willing to pay whatever they have to to buy a 996. They ignore the potential (and actual) issues with these cars and pay stupid prices for them. I have seen two 40AE cars sell for almost $70K after needed maintenance issues and auction fees. THose buyers would have been far better off with an 85-86 Carrera...

It’s because they r dirt cheap and the used car market is stupid crazy. Trying to read into this that the 996 has found some long lost respect is ridiculous. The sh&t box interior will always place values lower than other 911’s. Only people saying “values r going through the roof”r 996 owners. They’re not bad cars, they’re just not great cars and bare way too much resemblance to the Boxster. This is why they will always lag in relative value.

I did know about air cooled and water cooled but could afford a good air cool car. So test drove back to back a 996.2 4s a 997.1 c2 and a 996.1c2. I had the budget and air cover from the wife to buy the most expensive car which was the 997. But after driving all three for me the 996.1 was my favourite and cheapest the c4 was very pretty but to planted because of the 4wheel drive system the 997 was quick and being a c2 much more fun to drive but the driving experience was well not that exciting the 996 on the other hand felt alive agile and fast enough for our roads so I bought it. 6 years latter I still look forward to driving it and I think she is beautiful from every angle including it’s beautifully designed lights if there never shared it’s lights with another cheaper car they would be considered a design classic today.
