Jim, good job. When i got my 2007 Turbo in 2018, it had starting problems as well. After driving for a little bit and then stopping and having to start again, it would give problems. It would finally start but a pain. I tried to change it myself but could not get a good torque with the extensions I had. I tried for like an hour and just gave up and took it to my local indy who did it cheap. Glad you were able to do it....nothing like Jay's problems with his engine out stuff but still a tricky job if you have never done it before.

These are nothing like to old time starters, I did one on a late 70's Chevy it must have been over 40 pounds. However there was tons of space to fight with it. Great content keep the videos coming.

Great job Jim!! Hopefully it's very similar if not the same process for my 08 non turbo whenever it decides to stop starting well for me.

I need to do the same on mine 997.1 turbo. You mention the starter is on the passenger side, do you have left or right hand steered car (UK or US passenger side)? Great video, thanks!

I'm in the US, left side steering, thanks.

location looks the same as 997.1 GT3 does anyone know ? Sounds like removing passenger rear tire helps with access ?? Is the firewall bolt to check from the top or the bottom ?

Good video. I showed it to my 15-year-old son, and he crawled under the car. Less than ten minutes later, and some ugly words I do not think he learned in school, he crawled back with the old starter. I had not even drunk my coffee. A little tip for those who are going to do this, is to use 3/8 "tools. And remove the right rear wheels. Then you can easily take the starter motor out that way.

I just googled the part number and it tells me, that this starter is for a 996. Is it the same for both?

It certainly appears to be. It's the part number stamped on the starter that came out which I pretty sure is the original.

Great job ! Would it have been much work to disconnect the drive shaft and improve access?

Quick question: is it easier to access the starter from below rather than going in from above? Also, a mechanic on one of the forums commented that the intermittent issue with the starter is a common issue and due to lubrication deterioration. It does not need to be replaced. You can remove it, give it a good lubrication and reinstall it. Might save some money for us diy folks.

Depends on the location of the starter on the car. On mine, the location of the starter is at the bottom next to the transmission on the passenger side so it has to be accessed from the bottom of the car. I've seen non turbo cars where it's on top behind the throttle body thus is accessed from the top. I think it's more than a lubrication issue. I think the solenoid contacts are also worn and dirty as well as the brushes and commutator. The starter can probably be rebuilt and various worn parts cleaned and replaced. But the time and trouble to do that isn't worth it to me. I'm just not going to bother to chance it, find replacement parts, special tools for what it cost to replace it with new for only $250. The price of rebuilt is about the same unless you buy the Porsche brand and want to pay the P tax.

Jim, has the new starter fixed your no start issue? Give us the 2 year update. I have the same starting issue pretty frequently and am considering replacing the starter but want to make sure it’s the culprit. I’ve already had the flywheel sensor re gapped and no luck.

My starter was sluggish and made worse when battery was not fully charged. So replacing with new starter fixed this problem. The starter sounds and turns much faster after replacement. Sounds like your issue might be different than mine. As mentioned in the video, check the positive connection at the firewall and make sure it's tight and clean and check the ground strap to the chassis on the back, make sure it's tight. I hope you don't have an intermitent issue with the ignition key switch, etc.

Hi Jim---nice job on your video. I feel like I've been following a similar journey with my car as to that which you've been documenting with yours, so you're videos are always one of the go-to sources for me. Quick question on the starter replacement, as I've never done one before. Is there any concern when it comes to aligning the teeth on the new starter with the teeth on the flywheel? Or will the two automatically align themselves as you push the starter into place?
@atm4jim
Жыл бұрын
Should "auto align" when solenoid pushes gear towards flywheel as there isn't any adjustments when installing, will either bolt on or not if starter is not mounted correctly. Thanks!.

Great video thanks, I’ve had my 997 turbo about 8 years now and the starter was replaced during a service 2 years ago. It definitely cranks faster and starts easier with the new starter motor, but I’m still getting intermittent cold start problems. I’ve taken the bulkhead power distribution bolt out and cleaned it, next step is the repair kit where the stupid bolt is replaced with a threaded item and the battery lead has a crimp ring on the end instead of the swivel connector.

Can you only get to the distributor bolt from underneath?
