I did lots of research on the 2012.5 before I bought a CPO 991 and their is very little changed to the newer .1 models. I think the only change/upgrade that I could find is the 2012.5 doesn't have a hard drive in the PCM and the 2013 does. I may be missing something else that may have changed but it looks like Porsche got it right at the start of this model. You are spot on as far as pricing goes, Good video.

So all that I can add to this excellent analysis is that it never hurts to do your research and also when/if you are ready to purchase, to go with your gut feeling. I looked at a lot of Carreras before deciding on mine. In early 2015 I bought my 2011 997.2 C2S with just over 10K miles from a dealer from in VA (I live in TX). This car is loaded with options including turbo wheels, PSE, shift paddles, Bose sound system, clear rear light fixtures, the remainder of the extended warranty, and rear park assist. I never saw the car in person and decided to pull the trigger and buy without driving it, then had it shipped to Texas. The car was immaculate upon arrival, and I've not had any issues with it. It now has 25K miles, I drive it at least 2-3 days a week, and I love it. It purrs like an angry tiger in Sport Mode and most days I'm afraid to drive it in Sport Plus (too many cars around me)... leave that mode for the track. Original MSRP $121,000. I paid $72K. Thank you JP&C - as others have already chimed in and commented - you are spot on, on pricing these machines. My best to you.

Flattening of the 997 and 996 curves are definitely partly due to age, but one could also conclude that it's because of the IMS bearing. If the chart included 993's and earlier models it would have been interesting to see. Thanks for the analysis.
@JPandCompany
7 жыл бұрын
+Aris Oglesby I think the IMS problem does lower prices, but I wonder how much it really contributes. I'd wager to bet that the majority of 911 owners don't know anything about the IMS and are buying Porsche for the badge. Either way, it's definitely a contributing factor of the overall value of those cars!

One thing to consider when looking for used cars with options. Porsche options are very expensive, as in the example in the video $40K new. These are great to buy used. Because you KNOW the original owner had extra cash. So it might mean that Porsche is $10K more than the others, but it might also be a better maintained car. Not always, but most people that can afford the loaded models, take the car to the dealership mechanics for everything.

I believe the biggest option that will effect the value of the 991 in the future would be if it has the pdk or the 7 speed manual. The manual will probably be more valuable regardless of the other options. But who knows. It's still too early to tell even in 2018.

I think the risk of the small likelihood of IMS and bore scoring is offset by the expected and likely probable electronic issues that will need to be dealt with on 991s, being they are more complex cars. Personally I think the best Porsche bang for the buck right now is the 997 turbo. Rock solid Mezger, not too complex of a car, is and always will be a beast.

The near - universal praise in these comments is well - deserved. Me too: great video, and I've subscribed. For ideas, I'd like to know a) which of all the Porsche line is the best to buy on a total cost of ownership basis (eg a ten - year-old Boxster vs a 996 turbo? etc), and then which brands compare. I'm also interested in a Volvo T6R wagon for example, odd though that cross-shopping choice may be. What about the M2 after five years - a dumb idea as I expect? Would be valuable work to the world. Maybe a car website would even pay you for that kind of broader comparison too.

I think the 2012 991 is higher because it looks like a brand new 911. The only reason you'd get the 997.2 over the 991 of the same year is because you want the classic smaller size with hydraulic steering. That and you realize that those cars are unique and enthusiasts will see them as valuable. If you don't know anything about 911s that 991 is going to look really nice and technically it is, it's just not as unique since they're still making them.

Neil L congrats on the car. The 997.2 is the one I want. I think the depreciation curve will level off if not go up due to that car 2009-2012 being the car enthusiast know is the one to get. That and the more sports car proportions I think will be more valued to the 911 community as a whole. The 991 is an excellent car. They're just still making them.
@neill9614

I hope you are right! :) I do love it. I did try a 991.2 but the price was just too much and while the 718S is great it was never going to scratch the itch like a 911 would. Until I saw mine at the dealer I had dismissed the 997 as too old. It took the first 10 mins of a 1 hour test drive to change my mind. Fantastic cars and super value when considering the price of the newer cars. I don't regret the purchase at all, it's all the 911 experience for a fraction of the cost of a new car and as you say many regard it as the drivers' 911. I hope you find your 997 they really are exceptional motors! If you have around £400k spare there is this one going up for sale in London www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/750563/Porsche-911-Sport-Classic-2010-rare-Hexagon-classic-cars-London Silly money expected but it is a lovely thing and makes the 'lesser' 911s seem more of a bargain ;)

Yes, It has to be a 2015 .( back up camera ) I just sold my 2015 Corvette Stingray and been contemplating the option between a corvette Z06 and the Porche 911 Carrera S. I am having a hard time figuring out which car is actually going to be a better fit for me . 1 . I love the Corvette Engine sound and its performance. 2. I love the Corvette price on a 2015 Z06 convertible. Conns: 1. I noticed how significant the depreciation was on the Corvette trade in value and it scares me . 2. I don't like the interior quality . 3. Gas MPG Porche 911 Carrera S 1. I never Own one. 2. Love the interior ( looks classy) 3. Good enough performance compared to Corvette . 4. I think it holds a better retail value. Conns: 1. Slower than my old Corvette. 2. My wife doesn't like the buddy style as much but accepts it . 3. Expensive 4. I'm kind of tall (6'1 and my son 6'3) So we kind of look funny. According to my wife. I want a car that I can keep for a long time 7-10 years at least . I'm tired of losing money on trades . Thank you Bernie Casas
@JPandCompany
7 жыл бұрын
+jackie casas What do you plan on doing with the car? The 911 will be a better daily driver, but like you said, the Z06 has more performance (possibly too much for RWD, IMO). From your lists, it seems like your wife may be more critical of the 911 than you are. I've got a few buddies who are about your sons height, and I've never noticed them looking out of place in the 911. They don't have any issues with driving it either. Both of those cars still have a lot of depreciating left to do. I don't know how much a completely loaded Z06 is, but you can find preowned 911s with original builds of $140k going for a very good price. If you haven't already, head over to 991 forum on Rennlist and look at the stickied post on cars for sale. There are a ton of good examples on there. I looked at a bunch of different cars before I settled on a 911, but it was a better choice for me. It fit my style and my needs better. It's a tough choice for sure

I would have expected to see a larger gap in value between the 2001 and the 2002 due to the larger engine and the more "palatable" turbo headlights in the '02 and between the 2008 and the 2009, again because of the additional HP and the PDK trans.

Same problem we are having in Canada. A 2012 car is within 10k of a 14 or 15. Prices have gone through the roof and it certainly makes it hard to part with your money even if it is within reach. I understand for specialty models (even if every P-car is special) but a C2s or c4s should depreciate naturally...
@MagicAyrtonforever

Silvio Ndorere I agree, people need to stop buying them.. The Germans are getting way to greedy. I think I'm going to buy a used 370Z Nismo, they have depreciated a lot and while not as fast as a Porsche nearly as much fun, more reliable and cheaper to maintain.

@JPandCompany
7 жыл бұрын
All of the older GT3s have appreciated since they were released. I don't see the 991.1 having any problem doing the same. Has Porsche decided what motor they are putting in the 991.2? Last I hear, they were sticking with a NA engine. If they don't turbo charge it, and they put the manual gear box back in, then I think the 991.2 will be the more desirable car. It'll probably drive the 991.1 prices down for a few years, but it'll bounce back.

If your goal is cost of depreciation, you're not even close. Your graph stops WAY too soon! Porsche has been making the 911 for 60 years now. There's a clear trend of 911 APPRECIATION (increasing prices) after about 15 years. Find a low miles excellent condition 996 and you can just about guarantee it'll be worth more 5 to 10 years from now. Or an early 997, if you don't mind a little depreciation. Or do what you're supposed to do and buy the one that puts the biggest smile on your face.

At the Monterey Historics some years ago Porsche was the featured marque and someone gave me a sheet showing Porsche model prices going back practically forever. Might still have it. Main thing I clearly remember, they all went down in price the first 10 or so years, bottomed out, then began appreciating. (I'm not counting a few rare exception limited production models.) They just start climbing several percent a year so by about 30 years the good condition cars still left are back at about their original price when new. However, prices for these older cars varies wildly by condition, with the rare all-original low-miles cars commanding huge premiums over examples that may be equally mechanically sound but have been restored, repainted, etc. People can go crazy studying this to death when really all most of them need to know is buy one you enjoy driving that is at least 10 years old, you can hardly go wrong.

You're absolutely right. I bought my beautiful 1990 Targa C2 in Guards Red and Beige interior with a Black Targa roof in 2004 for $18,500. Sold it in 2011 for $19,000. I can't believe it is worth well over $40,000 now! I miss it so much. Was so beautiful and trouble-free.

Kevin your experience, price increasing between year 14 and year 21, perfectly matches the norm. Its common with lots of things, but especially with 911's because as you noted they are so fun, beautiful and trouble-free. When you say you miss it so much, they guy I bought mine from was actually crying as I drove off in it. The 911 connects with you like no other. That they also go up in value is just icing on the cake.

Amazing video. What 911 trim, options & mileage would you recommend if you had $50k cash? Also after viewing the market for past few years I can't believe 2012 997's are selling for $50k. A search on autotrader and cars.com can show they are going for at least $60k

For $50k, finding a car with a warranty (I'm a big fan of warranties) is going to be tough. I think I'd invest that money in a 996 turbo if it was me!

+SuperSufiSaint I’d absolutely buy one as long as the IMS issue has been addressed and a proper pre purchase inspection didn’t reveal any major issues.

Thanks for the informative video! 🦅🦅🇺🇸 Perhaps I got a question?! I have a 2011 GT3RS, 8,200 miles, custom sound, expel self healing film and ceramic coated. Sunday car. How much would you list for sale? Also, what is the best 911 model to get on 991 model? For value retention.(ie., GT3, GTS etc). Would you get the 2018 GT3 touring? suggestion welcome. Dealer asking for 15k over invoice right now. Please get me your thoughts. Thanks

How does the fact that, in the first couple of years, maintenance is cheaper/less frequent?

Digimer the warranty is key on these cars to keep the cost of ownership down. Repairs are really expensive. I'd have to really love the car to keep it once the warranty is out.

Im interested on the "special" 911's, like GTS or GT3, etc. I just ordered a 2018 991.2 GTS very lightly optioned, as I cant find a used 991.2 GTS. The GTS tends to be thought of as a "sweet spot" in the sea of 911 variants. Do you feel the curves look similar for ALL 911 models? Thanks

Thanks. Am currently looking to buy a 2014 911S with 42k miles. Plan to drive 7-8k miles a year so if I keep it for 2 years I will be around 58-60k miles. My question is that if I want to get a 2014 911, am I better off paying more for a lower mile (25-30k mile) and selling it after 2 years with 45-50k miles or is the depreciation the same in both cases? To summarize, assume driving 16-18k miles over 2 years, which car will depreciate more.... 2014 911 S with 25k miles or 2014 911S with 42k miles. is it much harder to sell a 60k mike 911? Thanks

You don't have the 70-97 Porsches showing the chart goes back up... Just saying a 930 or 993 are going for ridiculous prices and would match 997 prices if not 991

For ANY specialized items from firearms to cars, blue books are irrelevant. It is what the market sets. If you walk into any gun store with a pre war walther ppk the store owner is going to quote one of these books. You'd be a fool to listen to him. The market is known by those who pay attention. Everyone else gets taken advantage of.
@JPandCompany

+Bertram Inc. That's interesting you mention that! I've been working on an Aston Martin video and the blue books are completely different from what the actual market shows. I didn't find that with the 911 Carrera. I think it's so mass produced that the blue book numbers are still relevant.
