Dude! Awesome analysis. I'm a bachelor, PE coach, renter, again SINGLE no woman yappin at me and burying me in debt. I'm stoked and drive a 991.2 cabriolet . Gas in SC is $4.30, insurance $133 month, tires roughly 1,600.... it's doable! You don't need to sell real estate or manage people's money... i paid 106k put 10k down, monthly 1,400. You can go lower but im gonna be dead in a decade or so....SO PHAAAK IT LIVE BOYS!

Very interesting. Don't forget to add in the opportunity cost when comparing against a cheaper car. Meaning, the investment return the difference in cost could make. At 5% (insert your own prediction of the market here) that can add up over the years. This is the reason I say: Buy a car for cash. You'll always buy the car you can afford because you'll be thinking about where else that money could be put to use. By the way, I'm a Porsche lover, PCA Racer and Driving Instructor so I'm not anti-Porsche or sports cars in general. There's no other car for me.

It would be cool to see you update this with another year of data! I meticulously log all of my car expenses, but never considered calculating the per mile running cost. My first year is going to be wonky because I bought two sets of tires, a set of winter wheels, and haven't paid any maintenance yet. But, here we go: 2013 F30 328i purchased 12 months ago with ~29k miles now ~49k miles Insurance @ $0.068/mile ($110.15/month full coverage) Gas @ $0.107/mile ($2065.65 total, average $2.738/gallon, 25.60mpg average 37mpg best on long trip) Tires @ $0.112/mile ($775.67 for summer tires, $1379.66 for winter wheels + tires) Maintenance @ $0.006/mile (car was under BMW 4 year complimentary for first 10 months of ownership, 1 alignment at $107 out of pocket, $637.07 in parts via invoices for front brake pads and fluid, spark plugs, two oil changes) Administrative @ $0.012/mile (PPI and 2x registration, tax rolled into purchase price) Depreciation @ $0.129/mile (current KBB private party is $18-$21k, I got a great deal at $22k after taxes) Total: $0.434/mile I must have played the depreciation curve perfectly (or got a better deal than I thought), because it lost $1.00/mile under the previous owner ($50k to $22k in the first 3 years and 29k miles).

I've driven a 911 ('06 C2SC and '15 Targa 4S both manual) as a daily car for over 4 years. I don't get any where near your mileage. I am lucky to get 25 mph on the highway. I get around 12 to 17 mph around town. This can be because of shift points, which for me is over 3500 RPM and I typically wind up to over 5k if I get a chance, once the oil is around 225 degrees or higher. Autos will shift at lower RPM for gas mileage BUT boxter engines are not really meant to be shifted below 3k & doing so can bog the motor. I appreciate the video but I suspect you'll find your mileage and overall cost of ownership will go up, because of the gas consumption, if you shift at or above 3k or 4k. It'll be better for your motor in the long run.
@JPandCompany
7 жыл бұрын
+Van Lurton thanks for the insight! I actually do shift at higher RPMs (+3k once the motor warms up), and I go to redline at least once or twice per drive! Sticky to highway driving, I've seen 33mpg on a long trip before. When I go out for a "spirited drive," I usually see around 16mpg. Maybe the motor in my car is more efficient? Plus, the added weight of the cab/targa and AWD could definitely account for the difference!
@vanlurton6068
7 жыл бұрын
Good to hear!!! Do you have a C2 or a C2S or a C4 or a C4S? Weight does make a difference. My Targa is the heaviest 911 being all wheel drive, convertible and all the Targa glass and roll bar. It can get between 27 and 29.5 mph in 7th gear (manual) but I need a LONG stretch of highway and constant 65 to 70 speed to do it But that never happens and I get between 23 to 25 highway. Spirited is about 12 to 14 in the city and about 17 to 20 in the highway for the current car. You're really getting great overall mileage, thanks for the clarification.

Standard insurance policies for a Porsche is not a good idea. Why? Standard insurance policies pay based on the Blue Book Value. Standard insurance policies also replace parts with after market parts. The best way to insure a Porsche is with a high value carrier such as Chubb, AIG - Private Client Group or Cincinnati. These companies provide Agreed Value instead of Blue Book Value and they replace parts with Original Manufacture Parts (OEM) aka...Porsche parts.

I run the numbers of ownership for my 2015 BMW 335i and its below 35 cents a mile. Huge reason is BMW has zero cost maintenance for 4/40,000 miles. For the price Porsche is charging these days for their cars that would be something they should consider at least for the first full service at 40K miles. Hell most Porsche owners will never get there if they do say 3 years 40K miles. The 911 is an incredible car no question and every 3 years when I lease another BMW I want to pull the trigger but as an everyday practical car with cost considerations it doesn't make sense over a BMW or Audi IMO, especially since there are times I really use the 4 seats. Still I think when my lease is up in 2018 and the kids will be in college by then I see me pulling the trigger. Question is should I go for the 991.1 or 997.2, I love the fact that the 997 has the mechanical steering and I can probably shop around for a little more money for a GTS.
@JPandCompany
7 жыл бұрын
+Arisgod27 you've got some tough choices there! I'd go with a higher end 997.2 if it was my weekend car and a 991.1 if it was a daily driver. I had to make the same decision and went with the 991 because I felt it was a better daily.

I am curious about the price on the chart. Are you basing the curve e.g. 50k for a stripped down P car with MT or are we talking pdk, SC, sport seats, cab, PCCB, PDCC, nav, full leather. I have yet to see any 997.2 from 2012 S or 4s, coupe or cab got less than 65k with 22.5k miles on them. Do clarify please. Also your registration is only around $600. In Ca and Co it's much more.
@JPandCompany
7 жыл бұрын
You're referring to one of the other videos, right? Not this on (Cost of Ownership). The data was collected on the Carrera coupe (cheapest 911). No S, 4, or cab was included. And these are very lightly optioned cars, although, on the used market, options don't hold their value well so you can find great deals on heavily optioned cars!
@christianmani1730
7 жыл бұрын
Great video on the running costs, thanks. However, you math is off by .01 for the 911. The total is .63/mile. So the true cost in dollars is approx 27k miles x .63 = $17,010. How does your initial downpayment factor in as well? Do you count that as money back on sale minus interest on the cash?
@JPandCompany
7 жыл бұрын
+Chris Mani Thanks, Chris. That 0.01 difference was due to rounding each individual variable compared to rounding the total. It's a small difference, but the total is correct. The DP wasn't included at all. I think that is a little out of the scope of this data. I might consider than in a total cost of ownership after I sold the car, but this video was geared more towards the daily running costs. Cheers

I wonder if these prices are low because of where you live. My '06 Lexus GS 15k and 30k service (under warranty) was definitely more expensive than your 991 at my respective dealership in San Francisco. Where do you think you'll take your 991 for service after the warranty? Dealership? Independent Porsche certified garage?
@JPandCompany
7 жыл бұрын
There are two Porsche dealers in my area (about 20 minutes apart). One is always more expensive than the other by at least 25%. I'm sure location plays a roll, but there has to be more to it than that. I'm not sure where I'll take the car (or if I even keep it) after the warranty is up. I may just do the maintenance myself.

When the time comes do you plan to sell the car yourself or have the Porsche dealer buy it back?

Most likely I’ll just trade it in. I know I could get more for it by selling it privately, but the time and effort involved probably isn’t worth the money to me.

You mention that you've had a bunch of little issues that you had the dealer take care of for you. Can you give a little more detail?

Yep! It's all been small things. A solenoid went bad, fuel sensor giving wrong readings, motor of the heater/AC stopped blowing (just needed to reboot the system), electrical problem with the passengers side mirror controls, and a few other things I'm sure I'm leaving out. It's never left me stranded, but it's been a little aggravating for sure.

+gtb5 it's no Ferrari, but it's not near as cheap as a Toyota either.

+Kaeden Rashid It was around $300 a month for the first six months then dropped considerably. Keep in mind, that was on my parents plan. I checked for insurance in my name only and it was over $1,000/month! I had been in quite a few wrecks at that point too haha

Thanks for the fast response :) wow 1000$.. well 300 sounds much more reasonable. Since you've had the 911 a while do you think you will keep it for a long time (10+ years) or not?
@JPandCompany

+Kaeden Rashid man, I go back and forth with that everyday haha. If I get to a point where I can own multiple expensive sports cars at the same time, then I'd keep it. If it's my only sports car, I'll likely trade it. Especially once that warranty is gone.

interesting. would you ever trade up to a newer 911 or just a different car completely?
@JPandCompany

+Kaeden Rashid I wouldn't rule out a newer 911. As far as my needs go, it's really the perfect car.

If you're more interested in the price than the performance, do not buy this car. 911's are for drivers, not bean counters. If you're focus is money, stick to a Prius or Tesla.

In multiple videos you've made, you have a really bad mic setup, or just a BAD mic. You ought to reconsider your mic, and spend a few buck for a new one.
