thanks mate. I love the way you bring these technical problems down to plain old logic which is I guess the great facination between man and machine. Keep posting. Just wish you lived next door.

Hi Van, First of all thank you for taking the time to make this clips! They are really helpful, I have already disassembled my water pump following your tutorial. At the end of this clip you show those male-male screws, is it possible to replace them? Mine are very rusty to the point of being difficult to understand if they are removable or not. On PET I was not able to find this part... Thank you very much for you help.

great video. Does the lower balance shaft need to be set to tdc or its position be recorded? thanks

Yes, both balance shafts need to be set at a specific location for TDC. I show the marks in the video, and you can also find diagrams online.

any advice on how to remove the crankshaft gear without a gear puller?

Somewhat off topic but I've got a gas leak at the fuel pump on my 944. I can see that the fuel line on the outside which seems to run from tank to pump needs to be replaced. But how do I keep gas from pouring out of the tank?

+jockellis I would jack the car up so you can get a fuel jug or two under there... Put a clamp (even vice grips) on the hose as you pull it off the fuel pump, then let the tank drain into the gas cans. Once the tank is empty, replace that hose (and maybe clean the strainer at the bottom of the fuel tank).

Van Svenson Got down in there and realized the connection on the engine side of the filter was loose. That was an easy fix.

Those are called "studs" and there are a few different ways/tools to remove them (as long as there's not too much corrosion in the threads...)

hi, new to your channel and love your videos. i have a 944 2.5L non turbo with no a/c, 1984. in your experience, can you change the radiator without removing the bumper? tks Joe

Yes, first remove the fan shroud - 2 plugs and 6 screws (3 top and 3 bottom). Then take all the hoses off and the plug for the fan switch. Then undo the top mounts - the top of the radiator will swing rearward, you'll be able to lift it out of the bottom mount, and then lower it down and out of the engine compartment.

great, l'll follow your lead. one last item, my rad is leaking between the rad tank and center core at bottom driver side- would you recommend to repair or replace?. thank you, Joe

Azzurro Once you have it out, it's worth taking it to a local radiator shop to see if they can fix it. I had a radiator with a (self-induced) puncture repaired for $75. Otherwise a used radiator might be $250 - and a new one $350.

Yes. Most of the work will be from underneath. Take pictures of the way it mounts so that you can get it back in correctly. On the top edge of the radiators are some clips which help hold it in place. I think you need to slide them sideways to a spot with no lip to hold it in place.

what are some signs of a bad water pump?

Typically the shaft seal starts to leak and you find little puddles of coolant on the ground. The bearing can also go and it'll make noise. I don't know about 944 water pumps, but 996/boxster water pumps can have the impeller get loose on the shaft, so they don't actually circulate the coolant.
