You shouldn't make a comparison if the older car doesn't have its suspension finished. Half stock, half coils is dumb and probably feels dumb. There's no way you know how the car should feel tbh

I'm looking to get a 987 or 981 as my first sports car. I test drove a 981 boxster base and loved the way it handled on a windy road. I did enjoy the precision in the steering though overall it was fairly refined and was very smooth. I was wondering if the 987 is more of the same or if the hydraulic steering and less refinement gives it a bit more character? 987's are rare where I'm from sp not very accessible to try one. My other option is a new BRZ, though I feel like I may be underwhelmed by it. Also wondering if you've got any opinions on Porsche 981/718 EPAS racks that are remapped using GT3 configuration? Have you gotten to try that particular mod?

The 981 is a different car to the 987.1 & 2, the biggest improvement is the chassis of the 981, the latter is so good that till date Porsche are using it in the 718. In the steering department, whilst I like the feedback on my 987.2 I actually like the quicker rack of the 981 and have not missed it with the GT3 mods that the previous owner did. The base 2.9 987.2 engine feels slightly stronger on the lowdown due to better torque figure but the 2.7 in the 981 is faster mainly in the top speed with better stability. You will have to rev the 981 to extract the power. On the twisty road the 981 is a beast, it’s lower with wider stance that grips like gorillas glue, it is the most noted improvement along with engine sound. The 987.1 sounds better than the 987.2 buy the 981 is the best sounding Cayman / Boxster model bar GT products of the 718. I stand to be corrected, I have owned both Cayman 987.2 and Cayman 981 for extended periods UK spec. Porsche never go backwards, every new model is an improvement no matter how marginal you consider it…Good luck in finding a suitable car, this is my personal experience other may have a different perspective.

How far would you say is the Cayman 987.1 steering feel compared to a Lotus Elise / Evora?

Sound is nearly the same in both cars. I do not understand everybody moaning about. I have 718 T with flat 4 and I love the whole car and engines sound too. Forget the old uneffective naturally aspirated ICE engines.

Did a Porsche track experience day recently with a wide selection of cars. The turbo 4s sounded ok, the 4.0 six was nice but certainly not a revelation (didn’t really have the high rpm howl that people go on about), and same for the various 992s (which sounded almost gravelly from outside). The best sounding car there was the Macan GTS - which doesn’t really even have a Porsche engine. A lot of the online hate for the turbo 4 seems to be from people who’ve never driven one and are just parroting the likes of Chris Harris. Half of them seems to think it’s a version of the EA888…

Lol, I’ve had 2, 718 2.0s. Plenty quick with consistent throttle, but serious turbo lag when you need to downshift. Sorry, but the sound is nothing like an NA flat six.

Excellent comparison. My 987.2 is fantastic daily driver and has been quite reliable. Great to see you in the new little car, it looks fantastic! Looking forward to seeing all your driving videos. Julio

I think most are so fixated with the sound, that they forget how hard the turbo 4 pulls you out of corners. In real life the flat 4 doesn’t sound bad. It’s got that growl vs howl. I due find the f6 sounds a bit tinny at certain rpms. And in most cases you’ll never hear them due to how hard you need to rev the F6. And in a day to day setting, that’s not easy to do without drawing the wrong attention. I’ll use my RS3 as an example. Sounds pretty shitty at low speeds. But crack the throttle and Christ what a sound. But at that point, my licence is now glowing red lol

The 987 example you have is definitely a flawed one, that silly suspension setup (not being finished), really makes it an unfortunate test. I'm a big fan of both cars and we've owned the 987, 987 S, and 981...and they're WAY better than what you got to witness. You didn't mention that you've driven another 987 and that you don't remember it being that way. You can certainly push much harder than 5 or 6 tenths and really enjoy it. I do also think that one of the biggest problems with Caymans, is that you do need to push harder to have fun...and that's not always so smart on the street. I laughed when you mentioned the telescopic steering not coming out enough, that's still one of my biggest gripes with the 987 Cayman. Just give us another inch of telescope! 😂 Fun random fact, before I clicked on your video...I got a phone call about a 718 Boxster with a PDK. I opened KZitem while on the phone, and your video was right there. Spooky lol. I might check the car out, but I've never driven a PDK Boxster or Cayman before. Actually I've only ever driven 2 PDK cars in my life, a Macan and a 991. PDK is INCREDIBLY impressive and kinda fun, but I don't know that I'd ever choose it when manual is an option.

Hi, I have a question for you because you know the Cayman 982 and the MX5 ND3 well. I noticed in the Cayman that it understeers on the brakes (trail braking). In other words, the more braking, the more understeer. As if the brake balance was too far forward. As a result, the car does not feel neutrally balanced. It always remains more or less understeering from corner entry to the apex. It doesn't build up any rotation. (Just my impression, maybe I'm wrong) I know this from the MX5: the more trail braking, the more the balance shifts towards neutral and at some point it goes slightly into oversteer. It builds up rotation / yaw angle well and can be balanced neutrally on command. Can you confirm my feeling? Or did you experience it differently? How do you think the Cayman should be driven compared to the MX5? Somehow I haven't got the hang of it... Thanks in advance!

why the f would someone lower just the fronts of a mid engine car?, my god, most of the ppl in the states modify cars just for the sake of modifying them, not to obtain more performance out of them. I'd never befriend or talk, for that matter, with a guy who lowers just the fronts of a mid engine car, never. What a waste on the car. edit. T..the driver's trim...with a pdk...well, neaah. edit 2. the T looks ..disappointing; I'd rather find and purchase a low mileage 987.2 with a 6spd manual and 265hp; ideally, we should all get GTSs 4.0 but, I bet 95% of the time, a 987.2 or a 981 with a manual and a '6, instead of an automatic turbo 4, is the better proposition; it is about the experience and not about showing off!
