This is my car and I had the red 2.9 before it. Trust me when I say there is a dramatic difference in speed (but that alone is not the reason I made the switch). Not to take anything away from Mark’s video but there are a few points to note: 1. You can hear hear Mark is short shifting where rest assured that I was using every last rpm in his car, however it is still easily reeling the 2.7 back in. 2. The 3.4DFI engine holds back power until the oil reaches operating temperature. In Mark’s defense I did not spell this out to him as he was taking the keys, hence you see him initially disappointed with the performance. 3. The cost difference is not like for like - this is a lower mileage, newer car with the aero kit, there is approximately a £5k delta between the normal Cayman and the S. You pay your money and take your choice. The one thing I was worried with the move to the S was that the 3.4 would be a torque monster (based on internet comments) and lack the top end zing that the 9A1 2.9 has. However this could not be further from the truth. The 3.4 has exactly the same characteristics and just has more everywhere. I have a few videos of the car coming soon on my channel, come check it out. 🙂

£5k delta would be to a gen one S. Mark is right that there's a very big price jump from a 2.7 to a gen two 3.4. I'm not anti gen 2 3.4, I have one and it's my second gen 2 3.4, having had a gen one 3.4, and a gen one 3.2 987 Boxster, also owned some 986s, driven a few 2.9s, etc, so am pretty familiar with how they all stack up. but the price jump is bigger than the experience jump. It's a tough call. The gen one 2.7 is pretty reliable, where the gen one 3.4 is a total liability re scoring. Anyway, where does the info that the 9A1 reduces power until the oil is up to temp come from? I've never noticed this in 40k miles of driving gen 2 3.4 cars.

@@flat6croc You misread my statement - 2.7 to a 3.4DFI is not like for like. That's like saying it's not a £5k delta between a Ford Fiesta and a Mercedes E63. Of course it's not because they're different cars. If you want to swap from a 2.7 to a gen 2, it is going to cost you some money. If you find a 2.9 and a 3.4DFI with similar miles and spec, the price difference should be around £5k.

If I wasn’t so scared of scoring, I’d be more for the larger engines. I’m just a bit fearful of paying a premium for the extra boost when the risk comes with it. I looked at the Boxster S but I’m back to considering the Cayman base.

Internet drag racers overestimate the small real-world difference in on-road performance. The 2.7 981 6MT has lower gearing than the 3.4 so it also means that you get to higher revs at less insane speeds. Personally, especially with the PSE, I think it sounds a bit better too. No “S” envy here. 😊

I've owned dozens of classic and sports cars over my 40 years of driving, and I just bought a 2007 Porsche Cayman base model, not the S. Why? Well, I have a 2009 Jaguar xkr, and a Saab 97x Aero, both fast cars and I wanted a drivers car, something that took finesse to drive. It's easy to drive an overpowered car, driving a car well to it's limits is much more fun. Give me the base model, every time.

Great comparison thanks Mark. I’d also be really interested in you comparing to other cars in the 986/987 Boxster and Cayman families. I’m looking to get into my first Porsche and obviously cheapest entry point is a 986 but would appreciate your opinion? Is a 986.2 2.7 as good as a 986.1 3.2? Should I try to stretch to a 987.1 2.7 Boxster? Looking ahead, how does a 987.2 2.9 compare to your 987.1 2.7? There’s a lot of interesting comparisons to be done!

Your conclusions don't surprize me Mark. I Drove a 2.7 boxter for nearly a year before buying my current Gen 2 Cayman S. The S doesn't feel much quicker until you stretch it on a fast road. It also seems to lack a little torque lower down to the 2.7 when pottering about. I'm not sure if the gearing is longer than the 2.7, but It feels like it to me. Looking to the future and maybe upgrading to a 981, I'd really consider a 2.7 before paying the extra for a 3.4.

I have a love and hate affair with the pdk I still miss the old 2.7 manual heal and toeing and bouncing off the rev restrictor , you do need the extra power of the 3.4 dfi though it just hits a sweet spot in my opinion ... but like you say there's a price to pay ...

You'd possibly / probably feel differently about it if the 3.4 was on 17s. 987s are a bit dead behind the eyes on 18s and 19s and the 3.4 generally feels so much more alive on the 17s. Even the straight line performance feels more vivid. All that said, the difference isn't absolutely intergalactic, but most people are obsessed with status and numbers, so will always want the S or the R or the 911 or the GT4 ad infinitum when the reality is that a well set up base Cayman is a stellar driver's car and the more powerful options are pretty incremental. In other words, your base on 17s will be more fun and engaging than that S on 19s. But an S on 17s will have all the engagement of your base car, but with more performance. And the performance gap will feel that bit bigger.

Absolutely. I would say that the 'S' ones will shine on the track. On public roads, you can use so little of what the car can offer, that in the end, the difference is not that much. I've got a 986 2.7. I test-drove a 987.1 Cayman S, and although I could feel much more torque at the midrange, which would be nice on overtaking, I felt that I could be as fast as with my 2.7, probably using more of it, which is cool. The 2.7 is quite happy to rev, brilliant engine.
@flat6croc
Жыл бұрын
I'd say the opposite. On track, the 3.4 doesn't feel especially quick, you need mega power for a car to feel genuinely quick in a straight line on track. All 987s feel a bit flat on track, pure performance wise. On a bumpy B road, however, even a 2.7 can feel quite nippy and the 75hp bump from a 2.7 to a gen two 3.4 is very noticeable. It's not about getting anywhere quicker, more the excitement of a car that feels a fair bit quicker and without any downsides as the base and S cars are otherwise very similar to drive.

@@flat6crocI know where you are coming from, and I agree. Power is always satisfying, and on track, we need lots of power to feel quick. It's just that these cars have so much to offer, that on public roads they are very limited. I drive with a Porsche club here in the southwest, and there are lots of 991 turbos, Caymans, etc. Last time I was just behind a 992 GT-3, and I have no problem keeping on track with them. Of course, I'm using 'more' of what my car has to offer to keep on pace with them, but it does very well. Early morning A & B roads extravaganza :) Cheers!

@@HOG883R In terms of who gets down the road quicker, it's all pretty moot. A lunatic in a 2.7 Cayman will get down a B road quicker than someone circumspect in a 992 GT3. But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the performance of a GT3 on the road without being a lunatic. You totally can, you can enjoy the performance and the way the engine revs out. Sure, you'll be breaking the speed limit, but then I'd say you can't enjoy a 2.7 without doing that. I do think there's a point at which deploying a car's performance on the road becomes tricky. But we're talking really, really quick stuff. The extent to which you can deploy the performance of, I dunno, a McLaren 750LT over an older 650S is pretty limited. They are both so quick in a bumpy B road context. But if you're talking Cayman Gen one 2.7 versus Gen two 3.4, you absolutely can deploy the extra performance and routinely at that. None of which is to say the extra performance is the be all and end all, it absolutely isn't and the 2.7 is a great car.
