If they want enthusiasts to "use" their products; then they should come out with a series that won't break the bank and has low cost repairs and replacement parts available. No one's going to bring their Porsche to the track and really run it unless they have a personal budget that is akin to an F1 team, and that's probably not the only market Porsche wants. They want to be seen as an enthousiasts brand. They don't actually care about being one. It's the hype that younger people generate which will lead the old guys to buy them. Exactly like in the custom motorbike scene where ten years ago young dudes would ride around on scrablers an cafe racers. Hotrodding of any kind became cool again in part to the fact that it was a cheap way to drive/ride something cool. Air cooled porsches were a part of this because people were still looking forward to newer 'better' cars. Then the prices got driven up and porsche is slowly starting to become a brand for geriatrics with involuntarily floppy members again.
@iDropPhats
11 ай бұрын
That’s the trouble with the dealer model and allowing people to flip their cars with 0 repercussions. If Porsche limited dealer markups and blacklisted flippers from ever buying their cars again, then problem solved. But the issue here is that dealers buy the cars outright, so they can do anything they want with the vehicle unless explicitly stated in a contract, but that renegotiation would have to happen in the future. It’s the same with any dealership though, I’m in sales at a Ford dealership and we’ve sold bronco raptor allocations for $40k over, AWD Transit 15 passenger vans for $20k over, F-250 and F-350 Limiteds for $15k over, etc… Hell even dark horse allocations were $50k over, same with Raptor R allocations those were $40-50k over. The dealership model is indeed flawed to a degree, but it’s the flippers who really drive the price up the most because they’ll get it for a markup and turn around and flip it for even more.

They should make the cars cheaper then. And if Porsche is not directly in control of prices (because dealers are) then they should increase production.

If that were true, the 911 would be cheaper and the Dakar and s/t wouldn’t be limited production

If this is the case, the dealers need to learn how to look after clients with older cars. My local dealer (Perth) has had 4 attempts to correctly install a window regulator, and still can't set it up right. If they can't do a simple job, I'm not trusting them with as much as an oil change in future. Until now, they've done every service on the car. But prices have gone up, while my confidence in them has gone way down.

Dealer sold Porsche cars are expensive (more so in my local [mexican] market), used dealerships sell them at near-new prices. Hell, even individuals wanting to get rid of them want to sell them at new prices even with thousands of miles/kms on the odometers!

Car companies make money on parts. Of course they want people to use their cars, limited runs are for creating exclusivity, marketing opportunities, building brand image and making people feel they are getting a better deal on their regular 911’s and Caymans etc. when there are people paying 100k over MSRP for GT3’s and the like, not to mention the markups on these special editions. They’re for hype, dealers are the ones that make the money on these.

If Porsche lowered their barrier of entry for 90% of car buyers, they would certainly see their cars selling to more enthusiasts. If you look at what most actual car people drive now (for the ones that buy new cars rather than used), it's Golfs, Civics, GR86/BRZs, and Challengers/Camaros. All cars that are more easily bought by the average car enthusiast.

I bought a 992 S and drive it every day. These cars are awesome, they’re meant to be enjoyed, they’re meant to have rock chips because that means you’re raising hell down back roads and open highways enjoying the car the way it was intended.

That all comes down to their dealers as well. I know multiple people who were turned away from The new gt3rs because they were asked when they would sell it back to the dealer in vancouver. The dealers are some of the worst for it

The Cayman is a nice car. Would love to have one (almost did as 2nd car). Keep the price down, offer a solid base level with essentials and have 2-3 packages and not a fully customizable. Keep colours to simple popular- People will re-wrap it if needed. Keep tech to basic, dont need that 12" LCD, simple analog with a touch of digital. 4 banger turbo, affordable and adequate power to boot- anyone wanting to squeeze more will do at their own will. You could probably cater to the regular family parent looking for that weekend car while the kids are away. Their minivan, hybrid SUV and now add a sports car for the driveway. Spending 100K when you know you can't take it daily because you have to get the kids. Build a 2009 PDK "today" and I would still take one of those bare raw cars any day.

I think it’s very cool that Porsche cares about their customers enough to offer Apple car play upgrades for almost any Porsche. They want you to modernize and drive your Porsche for a long time. Other companies want you to buy the next new thing so they would not offer you factory CarPlay for a 20 year old car.

Porsche has priced itself out of the enthusiast market. The 718 gt4 was made to be the enthusiasts car and was around $85k-$90k Canadian. Now it starts at $132k.

I kinda get buying a car as an investment but personally I love driving and cars like Porsche for example are engineered to be enjoyed and driven! I have a 1973 vw bus camp mobile, riviera style and it's all original but it's meant to be used, I take it up camping 3-5 times a year, it gets scuffed or twigs scraping along the sides etc, mud puddles what have you. I say enjoy a vehicle how it was intended to be enjoyed. You only live once and they are just cars in the end

Luckily 70% off all Porsches are still on the road, unluckily the prices are sky hi for a classic, I guess that’s the trickle down effect of the Porsche Flippers. I’ve got a Cayman R with 106k miles, it’s worth half what it should be, but it makes me smile 😊

Porsche is in a very similar situation than Rolex for example, luxury brands with “waitlists” for their clients, hoping they’ll sell to someone that actually uses the product rather than flipping it for a profit.

If they want enthusiasts to buy their cars again they need to simply make more of them. Also make more lower tier models (Base and S cars). Porsche could easily double their production and they'd still sell out

That’s the same thing with every company, they all want you to use their products, especially the ones that go over retail. Even with watches, for example Rolex. Or in Tequila, limited Clase Azul bottles.

If they didn’t constrict supply of the most desirable models, no one could speculate on them. There’s no reason they can’t make as many GT3s as Cayennes, if the market wants it.

One of the most "driver" engineered cars there is. I'd love to have one but do not want/ not willing to deal with the rediculous cost of regular maintenance here in the US. American or Japanese supercars are "almost" as good but A TON less expensive to own & operate.

Either Porsche needs to be like Ferrari and conduct checks on people who buy to ensure it will actually be driven or they need to increase production and make more financially accessible models.
