January 2019 - Very well done. I knew about the Eastland, but had only seen a few photos. May those poor souls rest in peace. I appreciated your chicory lesson, too. I didn't know much about it. My aunt's father-in-law was nicknamed Chicory because he loved the stuff. He missed it, too. I remember him saying (in the 1970s) he wished it was still on our local grocery store shelves. Fast forward 40 years, I found it at Kroger. I bought it, and looked at the can for a long time, but could never bring myself to try it. Eventually I threw it away. Then I found out from some Southerners that they prefer it to coffee! But those Southerners are towboaters. Now it makes sense -- they run on oil! And I'm glad I didn't try it. I'd probably never get the taste out of my mouth. So thank you!

Did they ever find out what caused it to list to port or did I miss that?

All the people went to one side to look at something going by. They didn't correct the ballast properly. That and the fact that the ship was top heavy with the new life boats put on the top deck.
