A man is accused of attempting to kidnap and sexually assault a 14-year-old girl in Port St. Lucie.
"I have no doubt that Cherisme’s intentions were to sexually assault this young teenaged victim," said St. Lucie County sheriff Keith Pearson.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office (SLCSO) stated that on Monday night, Jerry Cherisme approached the young girl at a BP gas station located at 7900 South U.S. Highway 1 in Port St. Lucie.
The girl told deputies she went to the gas station to purchase butter for her grandma.
As she was speaking with an acquaintance, officials stated that Cherisme, 33, approached the girl from behind and wrapped his arms around her.
He reportedly made comments such as the size of his genitals and made a suggestive comment about his birthday, stating, "It's my birthday, and I have something to show you."
Cherisme grabbed the girl by her wrist and attempted to drag her behind the gas station as she was screaming and begging him to let go of her, the probable cause affidavit states.
Fortunately, the girl was able to fight her way free to run into the gas station and contact law enforcement.
"She was frightened. She was devastated. No 14-year-old should ever have to go through that," Odette Coe said, who was at the scene Monday evening.
The report states that Cherisme fled from the scene and was apprehended within minutes by SLCSO deputies.
SLCSO revealed that Cherisme was born in Haiti and has lived in St. Lucie County since 2018 with residence status. Deputies believe him to be a homeless man living in the Port St. Lucie area.
Charisma has been accused of Kidnapping, Battery, and Lewd and Lascivious Behavior on a victim 12 to 16 years of age, among other charges.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff is asking the public to contact law enforcement if they recognize Cherisme and may be one of his victims.
"Let us know, so we can hold him accountable," sheriff Keith Pearson said. "This individual was in our community, causing havoc, and we’re removing him from our community. He’s in jail. I hope he stays in there for a long time.”
