Absolutely brilliant! And for those of use whose partner continues to insist that our workshop be able to fulfill its secondary function as a garage for their car, this type of "portable" MFT bench could be just the thing since it can be knocked down and hung on cleats on the wall when bringing our partners precious steel baby in out of the weather. And once the cars are pulled out, the bench can be rapidly setup for getting down to the real use for a space large enough to park two cars indoors and that is to build furniture! And since I wouldn't have to "port" this bench more than a half dozen meters or so, it could be a bit bigger if I wanted with a rail hinge and a front apron with either T-slots or dog holes. Plus if I put some type of caster on the legs and a couple of sections of French cleat on the back of the bench top, I could roll it over to the wall, and tip it up so the cleats engage their mates on the wall. Throw a latch at the top to hold it flat against the wall, a quick fold of the legs, and my workshop would be ready to receive her overnight guests.

Unfortunately the comnpany mentioned in this video (Formatic CNC) appear to have stopped making MFT tops. Many other companies make MFT-style tops to order, or you can adapt an off-the-shelf MFT 1080 top (1080 1165 x 725) or MFT/3 top (1102 x 718) to fit. Or make your own, of course, with one of the many commercial jigs available. 👍

A simple 'Sorry' would have been nice... but i suppose at least i got an easy refund. I then went to ebay and ordered a top from there. 3 days later its sat in my living room waiting to be fitted..................Now im happy !!

I find the MFT’s limitation is its wobblieness under heavy use like planing and heavy chiseling. That said, a number of years ago I made a simple cutting/work surface about this same size for making trim and other small cuts for indoor use, which is a huge time-saver over running back outside every time I needed to make a quick cut at the chopsaw. Mine is a simple, bit of MDF on a flat frame - no legs, made for use directly on the floor/ground (size and weight reasons). Peter’s version is a great conclusion to my extremely basic solution! His fold away legs are light and compact, yet allow it to be used low on the ground (very helpful in remodel situations) AND the legs enable that extremely helpful shelf plus guide rail stowage. And then his solution includes all those other extremely well conceived features. Great project tool Peter, thanks for sharing it!

You might put a round magnet on that cubby hole top. and hot glue another magnet on the bottom of a box to hold screws and such. Then later you can pull out the box, put the lid back on and it holds your box of screws handy. Plastic lid on the box. Or you could get fancy and make a wood box.

Hi Peter, I’m just finishing up my workbench, after following your plans that I purchased. Made a couple of mistakes, as we all do occasionally:-), but getting there now. Unfortunately I had to make mine out of the cheaper hardwood ply you can get from B&Q, which although it does the job, isn’t great quality. The only issue I have come across with that, is that once the legs were constructed, and the table is stood up, there is a lot more flex in the ply, so you get some flex rocking if using the bench to hand sand. Otherwise, I’m reasonably pleased with my first attempt. Many thanks for the great design.

This is an excellent design and something that I think I could do. I enjoy watching the Ron Paulk videos but his benches are something that I shall never be able to make and don't have the room for anyway. I have a top which just sits on two plastic saw horses but this is a big step up. The storage bins are an excellent idea and then the final reveal for the storing the Bench Dogs fence was brilliant. I attempted to buy the plans but according to Etsy the plans are sold out. Not sure how you sell out of digital downloads but no doubt that will be fixed. My only query would be obtaining half a sheet of birch plywood. I am only at the level of purchasing wood, etc. from B&Q.

Be nice if you could find a US manufacturing partner for the MFT style top. I see you didn't use a Kreg jig for your pocket screws, so sad. I grew up in a town just north of their HQ and some factory located a flyover state in the US. Also, another option for fastening the top, one that I often use with particle-type boards is the pocket hole drill bit, which has a built-in counter bore, and pocket hole screws with the washer head. Solves both problems you're trying to prevent pretty easily.
@10MinuteWorkshop

I’ve never used pocket-holes before, and Trend supplied me with the jigs for review - seemed like a good match 🤷♂️ Yes, I could have used a panhead screw for the top, never thought of that and tbh slipping a washer underneath a regular screw does the same thing - pocket hole screws are really expensive here in the UK, FYI. 👍

Peter, Nice job, looks very interesting. Yes I took up the plans for the wheeled MFTC and also never got around to it. Looked at the Stanton Bench, which sits on the top of a work top or table, not so good on the Walnut dinning table. I designed my own based on using a pair of metal saw horses with wood beams between, then 2 or 4 panels that join together for a the top with an apron like the Stanton Bench. I think your design is simple, light-ish but certainly simple to slide in the van or estate car. To set up and get to work is simple. Great Job.

Has anyone tried creating an mft top using the bench dog rail square and lr32? One could route a line of holes, use the square and dog holes to run a second line of holes 90 deg from the first line. I just question how well one could line up the 2nd line to one of the holes in the first line. I have the of1400 with rail guide so maybe using that could be successful? Someone just needs to make a kit that allows you produce our own tops using a router. Ujk has one to use with a drill (MKII Parf Guide) but using with a router would be better.

For me this is significantly better setup than a festool mft for a UK based installer..l found the festool mft too heavy and why does one ever mention that for the price its not reliably accurate after lugging it in and out of the van.. it finicky to set up square and it wears your rails out.. I'm not bashing festool , I've invested thousands in them but for the price they're asking the mft requires too much finessing to keep repeatedly square and is poor value..that's my tuppence .. Incidentally what's the working height of your portable design.?. great channel..

Peter, I just had a wild idea regarding making the bench more portable. How about a detachable two wheeled dolly that goes on one end? Think of a hand truck. The wheels could be any size but the bigger they are the easier to negotiate rough roads and if big enough, you could more easily take it up stairs. Seems to me the the two wheels would be on a short axle that would fit into grooves, slots or some way attach to the bench and then detach just as easily when you have arrived at your destination. You would of course steer from the end without the wheels and he wheels would go on the narrow side of the bench. IE, if your bench is 600mm wide and the part directly below the top is say 200mm deep, then the wheels go on the 200mm part. The part where you have the guide rail stored is what I am referencing.

Bought the plans, enjoyed the build, didn't enjoy forking out a small fortune for the birch ply! My bench is very nearly finished and I'm very pleased with the result. One thing I'm scratching my head about is when I fold the legs in they overlap in the middle. I've double checked all measurements and they appear correct - leg length 665mm, bench height 750mm, overall bench length 1438mm, legs right up against the end edges. Can't for the life of me what I've done wrong. I suppose I could trim them but I'd loose about 15mm height. The only thing I can think of is the hinges lay differently.

Hi, I'm sorry, I meant to put a note in the description about that, thanks for the reminder - it's now been amended. How much space do you need under an mft top without compromising its function? I’m looking to add a removable mft top ( on a frame) on top of my (kitchen worktop) bench. Seems like a good community on here so want to ask a bit of advice. I got a friend of a friend to cnc me an MFT top on Birch ply. But my dogs from Bench Dogs don’t fit, they are a hair away from fitting, maybe 0.2mm or 0.3mm out. They push in so far and get jammed. The dogs are bang on 20mm. Any ideas of what I can do to rectify this? I bought a wee bobbin sander bit for the cordless drill and this seems to work a little but I don’t think this will be entirely accurate and takes forever, with a whole bench to do I don’t see this as a suitable solution. I tried to widen one hole with a 20mm forstner bit but this brought the hole up to 20.4mm, too sloppy. I measured the bit afterwords and at it widest it turns out to be 20.4mm. I did buy this in Lidl so maybe can’t expect much lol. Anyway, any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Tough one. If I'm understanding it right you're saying the benchdogs dogs are too tight in the MFT top? Usually it's the other way around, because Festool MFT tops are actually ~20.2mm or thereabouts - even the Festool bit designed for the job produces a 20.16mm hole; I had an engineer pal grind it down to make a snug fit with my benchdogs dogs. Short of getting getting your top remade to match your dogs, all you can really do is try to open the holes up a little? Maybe with a bearing-guided cutter in a router there may be enough 'give' in the bit to enlarge the hole very slightly? 🤷♂️ Let me know how you get on! 👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop Cheers Peter. I was thinking of trying to grind down my forstner bit a little to say 20.2mm. At 20.4mm (the size of the bit) there is a little wiggle room. Might just stick the bit in the drill and run it against an old sharpening stone or something. Failing that, yeah possibly just need to bite the bullet and order a new top. I’ll report back for sure.

Hi Peter. Your plans for this bench have presented some interesting challenges since I purchased them about a month ago. As I was finishing the assembly of the bench and was thinking about storing the saw rail underneath I realized that my 55 inch rail was probably not going to fit. But it did-- precisely. It leads me to a question. In looking back at your video, you were storing what is probably a 32 inch rail under the top. I would probably be better off with a shorter rail, especially since most cuts could be made with a shorter rail. If I were to purchase an inexpensive 55 inch rail, what would be the optimal length to cut it down? I'm having a great time with this bench. Thanks for the design.
@10MinuteWorkshop
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tommy - appreciate the feedback! The rail was one that I’d cut down for a project, and it was about 1100mm - so close to the 1080 rail, or ~43 inches. If you were cutting one down, then I guess the question would be wether you wanted to do anything useful with the offcut? You can’t do much with anything less than ~450mm (18”) which would leave 950mm (38”) or so which is probably long enough on a bench that’s 600mm deep. As always though, it depends on your plans. Hope that helps give you a few pointers! Peter 👍👍

Hi David. I'm afraid I can't, actually; I've used the Trend snappy ones, with the integrated drill bit, and they're pretty good, and I've heard very good things about the Festool ones, but they're not available as a stand-alone set, and individually they're about £60 each! I know Matt at Badger Workshop mentioned in a recent video that he's been very happy with this set - amzn.to/3g5ZeAm - but they appear to be unavailable right now. But you've tickled my interest, and maybe there's a 'countersink basics' video to be done, somewhere along the line! 👍

You just gave me an idea, if we use magnets for the folding track hinge, make a grid of magnetic dog holes around the edges of the table, with magnetic dogs on the track hinge. Giving you lighting fast and accurate ways to line up your track perfectly. Even maybe chamfer the edges of the outter dog holes to allow them to guide the dogs in with fussing with trying to line it up to fit perfectly.

Great design of bench Peter 👌🏼. Can I ask which 20mm cutter you used with the LR32 rail? I used a Trend 20mm for my 8x4’ mft style assembly table but the holes are a bit slacker than I’d have liked.
@10MinuteWorkshop
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I used the Festool bit, but that also makes a slightly larger hole than I wanted (~20.15mm) but an engineer pal managed to grind it down very carefully, to get a snug fit. It’s something I’ll be looking at before too long, best bits for an MFT. Was your trend bit the C030DX1/2TC? That’s the one they sell for use with their MFT jig, and I’ve been told it’s a good fit. 🤷♂️👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop I believe it was the C030AX8MMTC cutter. 20mm with 8mm shank. I didn’t actually realise the shank was 8mm until I went to use it and I had to order a collet reducing sleeve. Hi Peter, I bought the plans and will build it soon. Just one question, why do you need the rail square? You rely on the MFT holes anyway, so what is the benefit of the square over rail dogs?
@10MinuteWorkshop
3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks! As I say in the vid, rail dogs limit the size of the crosscut you can make, whereas using the MFT dogs in the square means that the crosscut is almost unlimited. But it depends entirely on how you want to use the bench. 👍👍
@azendakuben
3 жыл бұрын
@@10MinuteWorkshop So you have the square for long cuts and with the dogs in the square instead of the rail you can quickly switch between crosscuts using the MFT holes and longer cuts using the square? But when using the holes for shorter cuts, the square does not add any functionality, right?

Seems somewhat similar to Dan Pattison's MPT (kzitem.info/news/bejne/uHycsYlqsWJ2kno). Similar size, use of a bottom shelve, ... He has bench holes on the sides to attach accessories such as a beam for a vacuum hose, which might be a nice addition to your version as well. One thing I noticed is that your bench is relatively low, probably due to the folding legs. Not sure if it results in a more sturdy bench than Dan's solution... I didn't realise the fence and square fit so nicely together. And I saw you comment how the square has the advantage of allowing "unlimited" crosscuts compared to rail dogs. Big aha-moment there!
