Finally, we've reached the set that got me and my brother into magic (in German translation). The transition from Portal 2 to regular magic sets was surprisingly easy for us, considering the weirdness of some of the unique portal rules. @Titanreaver616
Ай бұрын
The interesting thing about the guns like those depicted in this set is they are actually a lot older than people think. Guns in some form have existed since the 9th century CE and the earliest examples of something you could equate to these was around the 15th century CE. They existed along side armor and swords for a lot longer than is commonly thought. Since the rest of the technology, ships and the like, they actually could have been there. Which is also consistent with what we see from some of the more advanced civilizations on other continents on Dominaria. I get its odd and I don't even want them all the time but it felt like they could have gone with the decision to not use them without any saying anything. Its their game so they can just make creative decisions without justifying it to anyone.

I like the discussion about the rarity ratio and what it does for new players. I think it’s interesting that having lots of commons also makes it functionally harder to find each one, and players buying several Second Age packs will see a more diverse pool of basic, low power level cards than players buying a bunch of another small set. This is probably great, because it creates a sense of newness without having to make the cards too powerful or complicated, and gives more space to show what sorts of cards you might find in Magic. New players are less focused on rare hunting, so this is a great way to make sure they’re satisfied while opening a few more packs before they move on to another product.
@karlk5801
Ай бұрын
Nice analysis. This helps me understand what Patrick was saying at 10:15 -- normally, the way to have more cards you haven't seen is to have more rares, but for people with just a few starter packs, more *commons* means more cards you haven't seen.

Some examples aside from obviously Storm the Seedcore (MOM): Denizen of the Deeps in this very same set, Pinecrest Ridge (CHK), Weight of the Underworld (BNG), Human Frailty (AVR), Knight of Obligation (GTC), Shape the Sands (DTK), Chronostutter (M15) - you get the idea

I don't remember which dragon I voted for in that particular instance, but the winner is no surprise given that Dragons back then were well and truly understood as limited all-stars and nothing else. Outlaws doesn't have guns, those are wands. WOTC is too scared to even come close to any touchy subject these days, going as far back at the first Ixalan set. An artist was told to draw pirates so they did, and gave some flintlocks, and it made it to print and WOTC made a public apology for it, had later printing edited and didn't work with the artist again for years. So no, you where right originally.

I think Thunder Junction gets an easier pass with guns because they made them more fantastical. On a closer look they don't really resemble guns that closely, but enough to serve the tropes. Many Portal 2 cards just feature very mundane and realistic looking rifles, that really clash with the previously established aesthetic.

Yeah but having a greater number of commons means players who are seeing a rarity based subset of the file see more individual cards because they see less redundant commons, the variety of rares doesn't matter as much because at that point the number of rares they'll see just isn't that high.

Outlaws of Thunder Junction doesn't have 'guns' in the same way that Portal: Second Age did. The 'guns' in OTJ shoot weird magic beams rather than bullets. Speaking to Patrick's point, it does seem like the 'guns' in OTJ are infused with magic and are not really 'technology' or at least not JUST 'technology'. Personally I think that OTJ is a really poor example of a pop-culture set since it avoids all of the key tropes of the genre, probably because the key tropes of the genre are now inappropriate in our modern climate. Throwing cowboy hats on everyone does not make a good Western set though.
