CT abdomen interpretation is one of the key aspects of surgical practice as the surgery is planned on the scan. Similarly, radiological reporting is completely based on console reading, and hence, tracing these important vascular structures is very important for identifying disease involvement as well as operability.
The current video is our 3rd video in the CT abdomen interpretation and focuses on the portal vein and its tributaries. We cover everything from the formation of the portal vein to discussing the key tributaries of the portal vein - inferior mesenteric vein, left gastric(coronary) vein, and the first jejunal vein. Also, the hepatic portal vein is described in detail. A multiphase CT abdomen is the most important scan to study and for portal vein, it includes a dedicated portal phase for the same.
As mentioned in the video and as we all know, the portal vein is formed behind the pancreas by the union of the splenic vein and superior mesenteric vein. In turn, the superior mesenteric vein is formed by the jejunal branch and the ileal branch apart from its other tributaries, the most important ones being the right colic vein, the middle colic vein, and the gastro-epiploic vein. The gastrocolic trunk of Henle is also an important aspect but, that will be covered in the advanced Scan reading video with pancreatic anatomy.
So, let us have a look at the imaging of the portal venous system and continue our journey in learning the abdominal anatomy on computed tomography. The video is definitely an answer to the commonly arising question of how to read a CT abdomen for med students and residents and is a primer on CT abdomen anatomy. @123radiology @RadiologyChannel @RadiologyVideo
