Nice little video! I’ve spearfished at Porthoer countless times, it’s an extremely tide dependant mark. You can’t see it from the shore but when the tide is running, an absolutely vast amount of water is travelling just offshore. As soon as it starts to run, the fish vanish. At slack water it’s a great place to fish but at any other state of tide, it becomes barren. There’s a large reef just offshore, which concentrates the water column, fishing it is largely pointless as the kelp is so thick, bass will patrol the gully between the rocks and the reef but they’re mainly further out, beyond the range of rods. It used to fish incredibly well 15 years ago but for some reason, the tides seem to have become a lot heavier and there are a or less fish there now, I don’t rate it any more. A shame, as I’ve had some great catches there, a friend pulled out two double figure pollock there about 12 years ago, which is unheard of.

Caught lots of pollock there, but not this year so far, get a lot of wrasse on low tide.

@@hiking57 it a fishy spot for sure! I’ve seen some really big pollock over the reef, in fact, I took my biggest ever pollock just down the coast, near Iago. Spearfishing gives you a slightly different perspective on spots, I see tens if not hundreds of fish per dive, I’m only interested in the legal size, take-home kind. Unless a spot is holding those kind of fish, it’s not really on my radar, which I appreciate is different from a rod and line angler’s perspective, where catching fish of any size is all part of the fun. Oer used to hold so many bass but the tides seem to have got a lot stronger over the years. Interestingly, it’s one of the few beaches in the Llyn where you’ll regularly see Sea Trout. One thing worth mentioning is that on the North Coast of the Llyn, the water is probably 2 degrees colder than the South coast, which is a lot! So at this time of year, the fishing will generally be a lot better on the South Coast, especially for bass. There’ll be a lot of bass about on the South coast now, although I don’t spear at this time of year as they may not have spawned yet - I can’t take a fish full of eggs, would make me feel terrible!

@@hiking57 that’s a super trout! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one at Pwllheli, Aberdaron side has a lot, I’ve seen quite a few up to around 4lbs, maybe a touch more. They don’t move like other fish, they’re either motionless laying up in the weed or they swim mid-water, really purposely in a straight line. I’ve occasionally seen them swimming with bass but that’s unusual. The one fish I’ve never seen, in all my years is a black bream. I’ve dived around Pwllheli loads but never seen one, which always surprises me - I’ve seen and shot relatively rare things, like gilthead and red mullet but never a black bream it’s been my dream fish for years but I’ve never even seen one. I’m enjoying your channel, it’s nice to see the spots I know so well, hopefully my ramblings are vaguely interesting / useful, a lot of fishermen I meet ask me about what’s under the water etc. My main advice to all fishermen is that the fish are shallow. Far shallower and far closer in than you’d ever imagine!
