On Mysterons, the sound you mention is created by an Ondes Martenot. From Wiki... "The ondes Martenot or ondes musicales ("musical waves") is an early electronic musical instrument. It is played with a keyboard or by moving a ring along a wire, creating "wavering" sounds similar to a theremin. A player of the ondes Martenot is called an ondist. The ondes Martenot was invented in 1928 by the French inventor Maurice Martenot. Martenot was inspired by the accidental overlaps of tones between military radio oscillators, and wanted to create an instrument with the expressiveness of the cello."

If you haven't already, you definitely need to watch/listen to their Concert in Roseland NY, they have a philharmonic accompaniment throughout, the concert is something special and a must watch for any Portishead fan!

One time in the 90s I went to see Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians and while waiting for them to start I asked someone near me who was the opening act. He told me “Edie Brickell.” ???? To my surprise and delight, after Edie was Don Henley!!!

@@InyoReacts Even better was seeing Edie open for the Grateful Dead in Foxboro Stadium, 1990. 🔥🥰 During her set I was wandering through the crowd blowing soap bubbles with a bubble wand, and everyone just kept letting me by because of the bubbles. I made it all the way to the stage! Just when I got there, her set ended. I was literally touching the stage, and it was SO tempting to stay right there for at least the first Dead song-but I had friends waiting for me down near the opposite end of that huge stadium, and it was their first show, so it wouldn’t have been right to abandon them like that. I guess today it would be no problem, but that was before cell phones, so I had to get back to them before the real chaos began. 🙂
