@glohbk6827 good analogy. I agree with you. But I also get that the city has to do something to appease the outcry for graffiti cleanup. 4 mil won't do much in the long run. I don't think the city understands the drive and need of human public expression. If the city would try and create a graffiti space (like Paris has) or something to extend an olive branch of collaboration, I think it'd possibly move the narrative in a more positive way.

I was a homeless gutter punk in PDX when the Burnside skate park was being built. If I recall correctly, the owner of the land saw that the spot was being used as a 'shooting gallery' for junkies, and one day he saw some kids had set up some shit for skating. After watching them off and on for a few weeks, he saw that they were policing themselves and picking up the garbage and chased out most of the junkies. He offered to let them use the land if they provided there own materials and labor. It's been close to 30 years, so I might not have the details 100% right due to the vagaries of memory, but I know it was something along those lines. It was so much fun hanging out watching the park take shape. I miss Portland in the '90s. Thanks for the video :)

But I see your point, there's gotta be more of a direction than paint, tag, paint, tag...millions of dollars spent in this cycle.

Yeah, it's a bit of a weird concept. The stigma that graffiti has for a lot of people, they just can't re-calibrate their mindset when they see it on the freeway. I keep looking at Paris and how that city is collaborating with graffiti artists. If there was a designated space, like you said. I think it'd do wonders for the mindset. It would behoove the city to actually take those spots and allow for mrual/purposeful graffetti. I'd presume it'd have to be preapproved work or whatever, make sure it's nothing offensive or whatever. Tagging though is egocentric and in other cases, gang related, territorial stuff. Painting over it is the dumbest thing imaginable. Even our school salmon mural was a utilization of very narrow concrete barriers down the hillside. Concrete is ugly, fill it with nature, native plants, and artwork that isn't just trashy. There's a lot of trashy work in portland but there's also a fair amount of good work, and it's the good work that shows what it could be if someone bothered.

Just stop oil using oil based paint
@Peyote1312
2 ай бұрын
Use your brain for 2 seconds. You don't know what kind of paint they're using. That's a total assumption. If u know anything about extinguishers, you'll know that oil based paints don't work right and clog them up. I think the solvents also destroy the internal parts of the extinguisher. Which is the reason people always use super watered-down latex-paint in extinguishers. Stonehenge has millions of visitors. I'm sure it already has some kind of anti-graffiti layer on it anyways. This probably took them all of 20 minutes to completely remove.
@Peyote1312
2 ай бұрын
I always see this same ill-conceived criticism of just stop oil; "They're using oil based paint. What a bunch of hypocrites. I'll pay them no mind.") It's the exact same "logic" as the "You criticize society, yet you live in one? Curious." It's idiotic. Petroleum is inescapable at this point. Your clothing is made from it. Your dishes, your bowls, toothbrush, lotions, medicines, etc. The petroleum derived microplastics are dissolved in your bones and tissue. You would have to boycott every known form of plastic, nylon, rubber, etc. None of that stuff is naturally occurring. They're obviously not boycotting the existence of plastic. Rather they are boycotting the enormous influence of the oil industry. And how Big Oil has caused so much ecological devastation & mass extinction, that defacing one little Monument like Stonehenge or painting like Van Gogh's Sunflowers is simply nothing when compared to that amount of destruction. All in thr name of profit. Also when they "defaced" paintings, they didn't even use paint. It was tomato soup. And those paintings were well protected behind a plate off glass. So zero damage. I suspect Stonehenge has a similar anti-graffiti coating to protect it from the millions of visitors it receives each year. Those kids aren't saying "boycott plastic!". They're saying "say no to subsidizing the oil industry with our taxdollars. An industry which lies to us, poisons us, and is leading us to the brink of catastrophe by fueling man made climate change." TLDR: they aren't using any kind of paint. Just tomato soup. The paints they've "defaced" were all safe & sound behind thick glass barriers. They are protesting thr existence or petroleum based products, but rather the ecological devastation caused by the Big Oil industry. One little painting or monument is nothing compared to the ecological devastation & global crises we are about to face due to man-made climate change. Try using your brains. It ain't rocket science, my boy.

@sketchypeoplepdx nice! Hey I'm curious, do you know of the huge f**k cancer tag on 84 westbound just past 30th or so? It's on a chain link fence, and you can only see it when the light hits it right.

@sketchypeoplepdx its my favorite tag in the city. There used to be slats in the fence, so you could see the whole thing really well. Then, one day, the slats were gone, and now it's only visible when the light hits it just right. I have photos of it.

@rpmstudios that'd be cool if there was a public space. You might be able to contact local businesses to get permission for a type of mural collab... Until then, best of luck and keep going!

I think there's a big difference between art murals, graffiti art, and tagging. I have a very good friend--Codex Urbanus--who is one the more well-known graffiti artists in Europe and he explained/showed me the differences. To me, tagging just seems to be someone who has an oversized ego letting everyone know he/she is there. Art is different. There's a street in the Belleville neighborhood of Paris, Rue Dénoyez, that is strictly dedicated to graffiti art, art on the walls of all the buildings along the entire street. The art on the walls of the building that hosts the once-a-month Portland Night Market in the summer has very nice art on it. It's hard for me to tell if it's contracted or graffiti. Kinda looks like both. You make some very interesting points in this one. Thanks.

@gr8fullytedicated that Paris area is great! Paris really understands the arts and the need for public expression. It's a very complex subject and I enjoy the different views. I love the Portland Night Market and those walls.
