Thank you Portland for showing us in Santa Monica the way. We are creating our first neighborhood greenway on Michigan Ave.

I'm so jealous. Why can't more cities and towns be bicycle friendly

What a wonderful city. Intelligent planning. With them spending money on the right infrastructure. What a wonderful place to live. I take my cycle helmet off to all in Portland.

What impress me so much about Portland are all the various types of efforts that are being put into effect across the board. There is the urban development boundary that prevents urban sprawl. Then there is all the vegetation that is designed to deal with pollution. Then there are the bicycle friendly streets. And of course there is the public transportation, and the efforts to encourage economic growth. Kudos Portland! No wonder it has grown by 65% over the past 30 years.

Still too vulnerable to cars. We have this, sharrows and speed bumps, in my neighborhood in Chicago and I'm still harassed by rude drivers and have had drivers try to run me over so they can beat me to the next stop sign. 🙄 Physical protection is needed.

the cycling experience on the Greenway here is axtually very pleasant... people go slow and there are often more bikers than drivers. part of it is, there are car routes that are faster and that's what most people drive on, part of it is the culture here, and part of it is the design here is probably better than many streets in Chicago when you consider all the things they shown in the vid like traffic calming and number of cyclists

Hello from the future! Here in 2023 in my city, we still can only dream of the safe biking solutions shown in this video. In fact, it was Portland that was implementing futuristic ideas. Biking in 2023 Portland is doubtless amazingly bike centric. Well done Portland!

Gee, we could have built environments like this almost everywhere. We just have to decide we want it.

A tip from a Dutch citizen ... narrow your ridiculously wide streets. Use it to widen your pavements and cycle paths/lanes. And plant some additional trees.Secondly vigoursly close down thru Streets. Prevents car short cuts. Want to make a livable city? Then make your city center completely car free.Want to slow down traffic even more? Then introduce chicanes for cars in the suburbs. And get rid of the typical "can't do USA metality". Such as, but not limited to, "We can't do this because of the road codes/city codes/state codes/traffic laws etc.". Just vote these outdated codes and laws out. Don't use them as an excuse not to return to a human centric country. And don't use helmet laws as an excuse to slow down or stop these changes. Helmet laws are irrational for the fact that it singles out cycling. If you are rational about it, which nobody seems to be, you have to introduce mandatory pedestrian and car helmet laws first. Lasty, don't use the excuse that bike paths are actually dangerous just because you design them wrongly and do not maintain them. As a rule I see just about every cycle infrastructure fail at intersections. The NACTO recomendations are indeed dead traps for cyclists at intersections. On a side note, diamond cross sections are for cars only. They are impossible to cross by bike or foot without a death wish. Unfortunaly, more time, money and effort is spent on these intersections. So cars won't have to slow down when entering a city. That is a car centric culture attitude instead of human centric culture attitude. Pity.

How did Portlander's get so enthusiastic about cycling? And how come other towns don't live this way? Where I live in the San Francisco Bay Area we have a good amount of cyclists but nothing compared to Portland. It would be awesome if there were bike ways that circled the Bay Area.
