The International Rose Test Garden is in Portland’s SW quadrant. It’s in Washington Park, along with other major city landmarks like the Japanese Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, and the Oregon Zoo.
There’s an official Rose parking lot, but there’s also lots of nearby parking along the tennis courts or along the road. Garden admission is free, but parking is metered. You can pay using the Parking Kitty phone app.
Depending on where you parked, you may have a short walk through Washington Park to the International Rose Test Garden itself.
At the entrance, you’ll find restrooms, a rose garden store, and sometimes a food stand.
The Portland rose garden has more than 10,000 rose bushes! With that much variety, you’re likely to find the garden in bloom if you visit any time from late May through September. This video was filmed in August.
If you’re looking for specific roses, you can check out the rose directory and map to find the variety you’re looking for.
New rose varieties are planted here in the rose test garden so their properties-everything from disease resistance to fragrance-can be tested. But regardless of your interest in this practical side of the rose garden’s purpose, the rose garden is a beautiful place to explore.
