The performers of the Portland Youth Philharmonic - the oldest continuously operating youth orchestra in the country - take their art seriously. Since 1924, the orchestra has taken middle and high school age students and crafted them into some of the country’s top youth performers.
“Expectations is one of the big words that I like to use,” said Hattner, who has served as the orchestra’s conductor since 2008. “It’s the beginning of what’s going to be, having an expectation. These particular young people - and I think more young people than we give credit to - want to be around adults who have expectations for them.”
