Travel with me as I take you on a short trip to the North of Portugal as I discover three beautiful cities, Porto, Douro and Povoa de Varzim and show you the best things to do there.
Porto is a small city but it is very beautiful. You can get around the city and explore all the best locations in 2 days. We landed in Porto and joined the line for a taxi but decided to order an uber which was much cheaper and saves you queuing. Most of the locals will speak multiple languages and two of the most common ones apart from their native tongue is French & English.
The main train stations to get into the centre of Porto are, Trindade, Alliados, Sao Bento & Bolhao, which are all very close to one another being a small city centre. The metro is very clean and the andante travel card will get you around the city on a 24hr card for about 5 euros.
Here is a map of the metro system en.wikipedia.o...
Once you arrive in the centre all the attractions are very close to each other and comfortable walking distance. We planned a route to avoid going back and forth over the bridge as Porto is quite a steep city and you can tire easily.
Our walking route:
From Trinidad metro, we walked to Avenida dos allados (Porto main square) Sao bento train station and Porto cathedral. From here there are two routes to the bridge, I would recommend taking the higher ground and walking over the Luis I bridge from the top footbridge. From here we bought tickets to the cable car (6 euros each way) down to the Ribeira and walked to a port cellar. The closest and recommended are Croft and Taylor’s. Taylor’s is 15 euros and lasts about an hour.
If you walk up from the Sao Bento train station you can visit the Livraria Lello the famous bookstore and from there you have the Base bar and Belltower across the road in which you can take a break, have a nice drink and admire the views from the highest point in the tower (6 euro fee)
Other places we would recommend are below:
Church: Igreja do Carmo
Crystal Palace gardens
Viewpoint: Miradouro de Vitoria
Market: Mercado de Bolhao
Chapel: Capel das Almas
