Man is this helpful. I've just started learning to paint portraits in oil and have been struggling with making a few detailed portions like the eyes and part of the face in the first hour than burning out before I can cover the canvas and finish the painting properly, because I just can't simplify the subject, this method is like the perfect solution to that. I'm definitely going to use this method from now on.

I love portrait art, there's something special about a face... The face is the mirror of the mind, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart... I guess life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see... eyes are very similar to paintings in that regard, eyes often times say more then words can... if you can say it in words there's no need to paint it... Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do. - Edgar Degas

Once I literally drank some water from brush cleaning cup which was turned to look like nice brownie milk tea. The real tea was was also in my other side. Once i tried to remove a small piece of feather from the surface of my on going painting entitled ' Peace'. But It didn't move. I had forgotten so got illusion for a while that it was painted. A hurt pigeon was shown being attacked by an eagle in my painting. When i immediately shared this stupid experience immediately to my friend sitting beside we got to laugh together. It was 2nd version painting in enamel colour. 3rd version was painted around 2000 AD in oil which is still with me.

This is by far the method I prefer. I used to start with an under sketch, which did get the job done, but took much longer and took the fun and spontaneity out of painting. Also, my paintings started to feel too “tight” and lost the special little touches that made them more visually interesting. I would definitely recommend the method shown in this video once you’ve gotten to the point you can do it. It’s not a technique beginners will find easy, however, as it does require that you learn to constantly keep the shapes and forms in check relative as a whole.
@SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting

I went through the same process. I used to start with a monochrome underpainting with a transparent dark like raw umber. But my painting would end up tight as I tried to hang on to the drawing. And then as I got more confident with the paint I basically ended up re-drawing the whole thing anyway. I think I might do a video showing some of my old paintings and how my process has involved over the years. I say "my process", I mean I found out how some of the other artists whose work I like did things.

Hi Alex, First time I have seen you and thanks for a great demonstration. Good to see an artist using a traditional method of painting from the outside in, also, having their subject on the Correct Side i.e you are left handed like yours truly, so you place your subject on the right. You would be surprised how many artist place their subject on the wrong side and wonder why they go wrong. I have seen this happen so many times. Every success to you.

Plenty of great artists work that way. This way is more immediate and allows you to work quicker. Which is fine for a head and shoulder s portrait but for a more complicated composition which I would spend longer on, like multiple figures in a setting, I would probably draw most of it first.
