Today we are going to Portsmouth Island to see the ghost town and serene beaches of North Carolina. The only way to Portsmouth Island is by tour boat or private boat, so we took our dinghy on the 3-mile ride across the channel to the Island.
I had read about the untouched beaches, the beautiful picture-perfect shells right there on the beach, and the abandoned village. What we found was so much more.
No, we couldn't get to the beach as it was flooded and we would have had to walk waist-deep for a while to get there.
Nope, we didn't find any of those big beautiful shells to bring back home.
We found a nice couple who volunteers their summers to live on the island and be caretakers of the Island.
We found a serene abandoned village with loads of history.
We found peace and tranquility sitting on the deck of the old Lifesaving Building.
We found our imagination running wild as we read about the people who lived there, and the last two residents who moved away in 1971.
We found ourselves slowing down, listening to nature as the afternoon slipped by.
If you find yourself in Ocracoke, or the Outer Banks, Portsmouth Island is a must-see.
Book a tour, pack a lunch and water, and head on over there. Sit in a rocking chair and listen to the world go by.
