I learned this from you in the 1990s Max. I used it often in the field and teach it to everyone of my students.

Outstanding video Mr Joseph. I attended a sniper course you instructed many years ago. I found your instruction to be excellent then and your video follows that same level of excellence as your in person training.

In your words, that was motivating!. SUL has been working great for our team since we were given our proper period of instruction in the forests of Wisconsin. Thank you Max and Tim for your dedication to making our jobs safer.

Excellent video! I see many trainers and students use SUL immediately after shooting to scan. I've always wondered why the hell they'd take the gun off the threat immediately and go into SUL while scanning (for civilian training). This confirms that they are misusing the technique.

Yes, it is called modified Sul and it is done the exact same way, but requires demonstration

Well done video very Informative. When I received instruction they failed to mention anything about the knuckle contact, and I failed to do any extra research. Thank you for the information. I'm curious about that position 3 and ones prior to or after.

most likely as a safety measure. If you are using a handgun & not a long gun, it's probably because your enemy is closer than is preferable. If something causes the soldier to lose grip on his handgun, you DON'T want the gun being knocked far away from him. He may need that handgun to defend himself, & yet be unable to move toward the handgun --- thus, bring the handgun back to him. :-) I think it's brilliant.

Is there a similar position when using the M4/shotgun?
@samuraiskill7062

Basically, you would be a secondary cover, or close quarter cover, which would be on the wings of the group to prevent enemies from taking advantage of side positions. You wouldn't be using sul since you'd be covering a right or left position or you'd be taking point into a building rather than a rifle taking point since your weapon is used for close quarters. Your weapon is a scatter weapon which if it's your primary, you'd be best covering wings of the group.
@samuraiskill7062

As far as an m4 goes, you'd be point and secondary, which would cover front targets and your eye would be trained on targets if front of you, and there would be multiple scouting the perimeter for rooftop enemies and long distance, to medium range enemies.

@TFTTDAG

Position 3 is a modified low ready position. Not a standard low ready position but where the weapon drops just below the shooters sight plane.

I don't usually like videos where they break out the tacticool terminology (because it's usually to cover up the fact that they don't know what they're talking about), but this video is fantastic! What the fuck was that scan, though? If you gotta look around, do it instead of rocking left and right a little bit like I see more and more for some reason.

Tell that to Pat mac. Sul has ,when used even slightly wrong, pretty poor weapon retention. Doesn’t take much torque to pull the pistol out of their hand, that is IF it’s done incorrectly. Correctly implemented, it is certainly a valid tactic.
@actiondesignsyndicate7852

@@jackf1830 I would not use it as a retention position. Mainly use it while moving/repositioning to not flag friendlies. Sul is a better option than 90s cop drama low ready position for that application that was my meaning.

How so? From Sul to High-Port every position has an application. Key is to know when to use the right tool for the job.
