KZitem Wednesday with #manahawkinlocation #physicaltherapist Dr. Mary Kate! Patient Becky is about 2 1/2 weeks post-op #ACLreconstruction. She had a #patellartendongraft, which means they take a piece of the #tendon just below the #kneecap and utilize that for her #ACL. A big focus early on in #rehab is returning the patient to normal #walking. Here we show how we practice this with Becky and how the changing degrees of freedom in her #kneebrace improve her #gaitpattern! Strong #quads are key! Quad or extensor lag is when the patient is unable to fully lock their knee out straight when performing a straight #legraise. This is a big goal we are working on with Becky. We keep her in the brace while performing straight leg raises until she is able to lock out by herself. Another way we try to strengthen the quads is by utilizing #neuromuscularelectricalstimulation (#NMES). The #electrodes are placed on the #quadmuscle, and send in the stimulation to force contraction of the muscle. At this point in time, Becky is coming in 2-3 times a week while performing her home exercises everyday. Keeping up with her exercises outside of #physicaltherapy has helped propel Becky faster and further along! Check back to see how Becky's follow up appointment went and where she will be in 1 month! #teamthompson #teamthsm
