What I thought. Have it under a thick leather duster or similar. Wonder if you stitched it to a backing of denim if that would help. Or but the denim stitched to the outside with room to stuff padding. Improvised gambeson sleeves.

Getting stabbed and having the weapon create a seal so that there isn’t a cavity for you to start bleeding into. If it had no effect I’d rather getting stabbed plainly or not stabbed if I were to be stabbed preferably with chain mail on.

This also brings the idea of modern samurai armor into my mind again where instead of using multiple plates made of layered paper or leather you use modern materials and composites to achieve the same effect which looking at stuff like ultra high molecular density polyethylene and how that shitt is basically bullet be gone you could quite likely make ballistic rated armor in that sort of style with relative ease

@@Orlando_Furioso Leather does absolutely nothing though. You'd need some really thick leather to actually protect against anything. There's a reason leather wasn't used as armour with the exception of cuir bouilli, which is rather complex to make and wouldn't offer much protection in addition to the cut resistant fabric.

Pretty much anything that will damage skin will damage leather, and once you have a cut in leather, that spot's structure is ruined forever--unlike fabric--so you'd need to replace the entire piece, as any repairs would be an almost complete waste of time.

For a more realistic test, replace the wood with ballistics jelly and internal skeletal structure of the arm. My guess is the squishy muscles under this fabric make cutting even more difficult.

My big caveat to his cut resistance testing, that wood is a much sturdier base to cut against than squishy flesh. If that was on your arm, it would have give behind the armor, which I think would make it cut less. Meaning this is even more effective than he's showing. Maybe start wrapping your stump with a foam pad to better simulate a body with squishy "flesh" and hard "bone"

Wearing this under a thick good leather jacket would make the combination pretty effective in regards to just simplicity and minimum impact on mobility. Good and proper thick leather jackets have surprisingly good blunt force protection for what it is.

Cut resistance definitely helps with laceration, it's more useful for scavenging and general situations where you're just protecting your skin from the environment like if you were surviving in the wild or searching through metals and broken glass this would 100% be nice to have

The thing about armor is, it was never meant to keep you alive. Just minimize your injury. Would it stop someone with an axe from amputating an arm? Definitely not. Would it stop a fiend swinging a switchblade haphazardly? Yes.

Might be a good base layer for your beefier armor. And you could wear a shirt of it day-to-day, for more mobility and comfort while still being protective enough for getting caught off-guard and out of armor.

Try it with some kind of meat inside it. As someone who works with metal and wears a5 cut resistant gloves you can still be cut through the material if the blade is thin enough without the glove/sleeve actually being cut.

Everyone saying use this as under armor, but NO ONE'S thinking about putting it over top of padding. If you can't cut through to get to the softer, impact reducing padding, then you're basically golden, and padding can be very lightweight as well

Honestly, I think that would be a great thing to use overtop gambeson to add some extra cut resistance if you couldn't afford chainmail, or wanted a lighter alternative. Probably couldn't stop a heavier weapon from slashing through on its own, but I imagine attacks with shorter swords would have a tougher time getting through to flesh

The swing wouldn't be as effective against an arm, as the skin and muscle would absorb and dissipate alot of the impact force of the knife. As well as the impact pushing the arm away from the impact vector/axis of the swing. But against an immovable object, the sleeve takes ALL of the impact force, focused on the tiny blade edge. Multiple systems of physics, working together to absorb force and prevent damage

In my humble opinion the best cut resistant clothing out there is a chainmail. I think my local butcher would agree on this cause I usually see him wearing one under his apron for obvious reason.

The main issue with this test is that you lose the softening of the blow that skin would cause. I get your point of it being right against the bone but the skin being there would actually improve its performance

an interesting thing to consider - your muscle and fat has a ton of give compared to a solid wooden surface, so im not convinced it would even penetrate on a full swing when used in a practical setting. Maybe some ballistic gel dummies would be appropriate?

You know you, just because the fabric isnt cut doesnt mean you arent cut underneath. When you press a blade into paper or fabric, it folds around the blade. Do this with an apple and this cloth for example.

Honestly tho, this could pair well underneath a leather jacket, especially since it on your skin would have more give than on a plank of wood, therefore making it abit more cut resistant in practice. But honestly in a post-apocalyptic scenario I think most people would use a blunt weapon or an Axe/Hatchet type weapon. So would probably do nothing to protect you from a head on attack that way lol.

We had A9 in a factory i worked in, it was hotter than fuck and i hated wearing them. But, it literally saved my life when a part got stuck in a machine and the die exploded.

I will say this is not an entirely accurate way to test this because the skin isnt solid like wood so theres no give to the fabrics so it will be cut alot easier against wood then the actual skin.

I mean double up on layers and add some protective metal to the outside for impact resistance and it’s a hell of a lot better then nothing and a hell of a lot lighter then old school mail and plate armor definitely a easy enough throw together too for pretty much anyone to make decent basic protection

Youre arm will absorb a lot of the impact of the big swing. Preventing the knife to cut it. Plabk doesnt give a crimp..(big guy huh!) Thats why it cut it. Stabbing is different.. that point will probebly puch the fibres away and it will draw some blood.. not sure how much.

I have access to continuous knives, AKA deli slicer blades. The gloves that I wear are not metal. I believe they're rated an A7, for use with a mandolin, but honestly those slicer blades scare the shit out of me.

This gives me nightmares, we had to have ata sleeves every place in the steel mill... if you needed safety glasses you had to have your ata sleeves on... i worked in the hot side( steel making) and research. We had our uniform, ata sleeves, silvers, individual job required ppe. Those stupid little sleves would be totally wet cover in sweat after 20 mins. And in melting offered no extra protection just a bigger hazard because moisture transfer heat and when molten steel hits them they shrivel up and melt to you.

This is just modern gamberson, you put it under chainmail and plate. Some shock troops wear anti cut and flame resistant gear under the armor.

Actually your striking it against a hard surface... Just like trying to cut a loose dangling rope versus a taught rope, your squishy flesh offers additional resistance when using this material (though could be negligible to be honest)
