Their discography is massive and explores many genres such a jpop, punk, noise and hard rock but the core of their sound is huge sludgy riffs and walls of feedback interspersed with soft clean interludes with lots of spaced out guitar melodies. I also include anything that could be described as 'blackgaze' as post metal e.g. alcest, deafheaven, ghost bath. I certainly like that more people are talking about Post Metal since for me it has what metal lacked in past decades that were filled with monetary desires (which is normal but it can corruptive for the creativity) and years fueled by having fun time with groupies and crap like that, and that is integrity. On the sonic side even tho Tool is one of my favorite bands i really don't relate them to Post Metal even tho they share certain traits with the bands that i do put into Post Metal. They are very progressive,tribal, psychedelic feel and pretentiousness (most of the progressive stuff is, there is no shame in that and it is probably the reason why im attracted to that music) however they lack the intensity, dark atmosphere, sludge and doom feel and those are characteristics that are most important for the genre in my honest opinion. As for Deftones, for me they aren't even up for debate to be in the genre, they are a great band however they lack even more of the things that i mentioned in the Tool part. Agalloch and the rest of the phenomenal progressive/folk black metal bands deserve their own genere i feel. For me Neurosis is the Pinnacle of what Post-Metal should be followed by Isis and Cult of Luna. However you can debate that maybe the name Post-Metal inherently means that these bands refused to bring cliches from the Metal and probably one of the things that is the most cliche are the rough vocals. So maybe you can say that the Bands like Russian Circles and Pelican that are instrumental bands, represent what Post-Metal actually is in its purest form even tho Neurosis singlehandedly created the genre.

I've heard the classic stuff, but post metal was my first journey into the complicated mess that is metal. I think I love it because it creates soundscapes to lose yourself in. Hey, I enjoyed the video! I was looking up information on this genre after enjoying the most recent Cult of Luna album (which was my first time listening to them, btw.) Stuff like this is very helpful to me, as I've recently been trying to learning more about the various sub-genres of metal. I listened to a lot of popular metalcore, classic thrash, and prog metal when I was in high school (about a decade ago) but have only touched a little bit of metal between back then and earlier this year (when I decided I was going to dive in deeper to the massive world of metal that I only heard in passing previously.) However, I have listened to a ton of Post-Hardcore and I was really taken aback by you saying that Post-Hardcore was an offshoot of Post-Rock. I think there's a fair amount of crossover and shared DNA in their early histories (most notably, Slint) but Post-Hardcore was primarily born out of pushing the boundaries of the 80s hardcore punk scene and trying to take the sound in a more varied and artistic direction. I think both Post-Hardcore and Post-Rock both sought to push boundaries and drew inspiration from No Wave, Noise Rock, and Experimental Rock, but early Post-Hardcore has a much more tangible relation to Hardcore Punk (and especially the DC scene) than most of Post-Rock, (at least to my knowledge.) So with that in mind, Post-Hardcore obviously bears a similarity to Metalcore because they share a major common ancestor in Hardcore Punk. Plus, throughout the evolution of Post-Hardcore, there's plenty of Metal influences and stylings that tend to show up. Mathcore immediately comes to mind for me (although I've heard some people say Mathcore isn't metal, but is strictly a more extreme version of Post-Hardcore.) There's also some bands that are pretty firmly in the Post-Hardcore category like Thrice, but tracks like "Deadbolt" or "The Earth Will Shake" have unmistakable influences from more classic metal genres. I honestly interpreted the "Metalcore" genre label to refer to a combination of the Post-Hardcore and Metal in reference to a lot of the Emo-flavored metal bands of the late 2000's before I had been exposed to the more "Metallic Hardcore" sound. I recognize that this is very nitpick-y on my part, you probably said less than 5 sentences related to post-hardcore in the video and I know that wasn't really the point at all. I just wanted to share an alternative perspective to that term, specifically. If you have some info or perspective that I'm totally lacking there, I'm super open to that, too. Keep up the good work!

My two cents: Neurosis, ISIS, Swans etc may have been experimental, but that is the origin of post-metal, much like post-rock came from bands repeating specific elements within the music of experimental bands like Godspeed. I also think you could have mentioned post-black metal bands like Mgla, Der Weg Einer Freheit, Liturgy etc, that don't mix in sludge like Cult of Luna or atmospheric black metal like Agalloch. Also, the combination of post-metal and post-punk/post-hardcore could have been mentioned, with bands like Amenra and Oathbreaker.

Gojira fits here in a way but to be fair each of their albums is in a different genere. They are technical death mostly but they have pure Death in their earliest songs, you can see some groove, doom, deathcore variations. Some of their songs might be considered as math metal. I really enjoy listening to them but god knows what the actual style is called. In terms of lyrics metalcore?? Of course I am a huge fan and might be biased and I probably give them too much credit but they are weird.
tbh I still dont understand what "post metal" exactly is, what makes it different from just "metal" or other metal genres. Maybe Im just to stupid, but I feel like people concentrate too much on categorizing bands/sounds into 9 millions subgenres. If I had to describe it with simple words, it seems, it just sounds a bit more like certain 80s pop songs than other metal genres.

The way I think of what, it is similar to like sci-fi soundtracks. It carries atmosphere and it feels otherworldly. It promotes sounds and textures and lets the instruments be more pronounced. It's somewhat similar to prog in that it carries certain directions with theme or time signature, but instead it strips the songs down to a minimalist perspective closer to ambience. The album Lateralus by Tool is the perfect bridge between prog metal and post-metal.

A good hallmark of the genre for me, personally, is if it manages to get stupidly heavy (think Bongzilla or Botch) with me hardly noticing at all. In other words, I'll put it on and it may be real chill, like Explosions in the Sky, in the beginning, and I'll start playing video games, and the next thing I notice, I'm listening to metal, without me ever realizing any singular point of when the transition was. If it can successfully glide back and forth between these worlds seamlessly , without ever losing the meditative, trance-y "pulse" that it may have, then it is probably post metal. Tool certainly has elements of this, yes. But their peaks, imo, don't ever get heavy enough to place them into any category of "metal" at all.

And then I fainted when you tried covering drone and went with Sunn O. Nadja and The Angelic Process would be a better pick. Also there is a sad lack of mentioning shoegaze at all? All in all very skin deep superficial dive, come back to me after you have spend half a year listening to nothing but Isis's second to last album on a loop 24/7. I'm kinda joking here but the bit about you not knowing much about the genre yet is true.

@@whatsinameme5258 yeah fair enough, it should be talked more about. I got into it when I experienced melodic doom burnout, when I noticed most band's new releases became uninspired, like sure they got good with the instruments but it didn't go anywhere, solos would build up to nothing, albums were not coherent with a song after a song doing the same concept in the same way making the last one redundant. Post metal was the answer to all those things, everything was well thoughg out, full of meaning, albums were cohesive units full of meaning, everytrhing was telling a story, like Rosetta's Galileo Satelites coming on two CD's to be played at the same time with the entire satelite theme, or each Isis album exploring different perspective/world/biome like the sky, the ocean, molecules, microscope level and so on. Ity also helped that I finally 'got' post rock with Baulta's first album, it really changed my life. I had to change how to approach music.

The thing about Post Black Metal too is that most of it doesn't even sound like Black Metal, such as Agalloch. Excellent job labelling them as Post Metal, I always thought it was whack putting Post Black Metal bands such as them into the category of Black Metal at all. Like what's the influence other than tremolo and blast beats? And big deal! SKRAMZ and Shoegaze have pretty much always done both and I think Agalloch sounds way more like those two styles plus rock and folk

I feel like you could broaden the definition of "Post Metal". The name itself implies a similar phenomena as Post Rock and Post Black Metal, etc. You could shove Deftones in there with Tool and Mastodon just fine Edit: oh shit, you did exactly this lol. Good stuff

Post metal was a misnomer even back then, would've been better called atmospheric sludge considering that's mostly what it was. Anyway though this video was a fun retrospective I do not miss it at all. Agalloch and Neurosis are great, I liked the Cult of Luna collab with Julia Christmas and her stuff with Battle of Mice.

Alongside Metalcore, how about the massive cultural cringe that was "emo" or "scene" music? That would make for an interesting video
@whatsinameme5258
2 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting idea. I am making the metalcore video right now, and I touch on how it is in some sense a reaction to modernity. I actually don't think metalcore is quite as bad as people make it out to be though. I think more of the cultural cringe is in the bands that flirt with rap or glam. There is especially a lot of androgyny in the core genre. They fit into what I mentioned in my cultural cringe video. But I have been thinking lately... Isn't everyone who goes against the mainstream technically embodying cultural cringe? Like the whole "reject modernity, embrace tradition" mindset. They are cringing at our society and embracing a former culture instead. So could something like Folk Metal even be considered cultural cringe as well? I guess cultural cringe isn't inherently bad. It's more what one offers in place of what they are cringing at. A lot of the scene stuff is pretty cringy, but considering the culture they are presented with, I can see why many would drawn to it as an alternative. Especially young people. I guarantee 9 times out of 10, that people that had a cringy scene phase are gonna be more "based" than people who were complete normies. The scene kids subconsciously realized something was wrong, they just didn't know what. That would also explain the immense overlap between scene culture and anime. These people were just looking for actual culture, whereas the normie just takes things at face value and is a product of their culture wholesale, even if that culture is completely empty. There saved you a video!

Damn, you are telling me that I've been listening to Post Metal ever since I got into Tool? That actually makes a lot of sense. A few month back I went back to Melon Collie by Smashing Pumpkins after years of not listening to it and some tracks on there most definetly had a Post Metal vibe.
