Having tonsil stones is a blessing in disguise. I get to have my tonsils removed curing my bad breath, and then I have to go on a strict diet for a few weeks for recovery which will help with my poor diet and my exercise routine so I can lose weight. Life hands you lemons. Make lemonade i guess.

@v if tonsil stones aren't giving you major problems then DON'T get them removed. After my surgery I was in too much pain. I didn't eat anything for 3 weeks . I couldn't drink water or nothin. I lost about 35 pounds. I was depressed for about a week. Worst thing I ever went through. And to top it off. Tonsil stones wasn't the only problem giving me bad breath. Update: I was in extreme pain, specially when the doctors don’t give anyone pain medication anymore. I got severely dehydrated and develop blood clots in my throat. I couldn’t eat for about 3 weeks because the blood clots set me back. I went from 120 pounds to 97 pounds because of this surgery. When I had my tonsils removed, I ate pudding, Jell-O, lukewarm (not hot) soup, lukewarm mashed potatoes, and ice cream (occasionally). I drank water like it was a miracle cure. To be honest, the recovery wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Of course my experience wouldn’t be the same as someone else’s. Every person is different. The only time I suffered was at night because I didn’t have a humidifier to make my breathing easier. If you are getting your tonsils removed, have a humidifier nearby for nighttime. The pain does get worse at night because you’re laying down. Other than that, the recovery should be smooth sailing.

Agreed, I’m in my early 30s and from day 3 post tonsillectomy my throat pain radiating to my ears started worsening. This is psychologically very difficult, because you think you should be improving but peak at day 3-5; today on day 6 I decided to see my doctor and he prescribed IV dexamethasone and acetaminophen because I just couldn’t handle the pain or tolerate oral intake. The steroids helped SO much in relieving the pain. Hoping it’s a smooth recovery from here.

I’m on day 10 after my tonsillectomy in the U.K. - over here the latest best practice for post-surgery diet is simply to resume normal eating as soon as you wake up. On day 1 the doctor and nurses had me eating a tuna sandwich - literally 2 hours after I woke up from surgery. I had toast for breakfast on the morning of day 2. And yeah it hurt like hell! But I ate normal foods this last week and a half…. The scabs in my throat are being sloughed away quite fast. Agonising but I’m recovering really quickly, with no bleeding so far!

33 years old at day 5 after tonsilectomy. Besides the fact i feel like I'm swallowing a bunch of thumb tacks everytime i swallow my own saliva, I get terrible headaches throughout the day. I could barely speak right after surgery but I got through eating plain vanilla ice cream and bread 12 hours after surgery. I only allowed myself to be discharged from the hospital at day 3 and throughout the time I was on I.V and paracetamol as pain killers. Day 4 and day 5 is when I'm attacked with terrible headache and pain in the throat, I was mainly on some gargling liquid and deflam for the throat, no pain killers. I forced myself with some spiced porridge (hurts after), fishball soup (best choice with zero pain and some chewing exercise), chocolate sundae (routine from day 2 onwards, chocolate helps improve appetite and sorta coats the throat for more solid food afterwards like bread making swallowing more bearable, I find chocolate drink to work just aswell). Today my headache got so bad I took some paracetamol and within minutes I felt a whole lot better. No more headaches and much more bearable pain at the throat. Some positives after day 5, I start noticing everytime I was my mouth( like gargling with tap water and brushing without toothpaste), scabs start to come off. The more I wash off the scabs, I notice I can open my mouth bigger and feel my jaws alittle bit more relaxed after, talking gets better as well. Other positives to note, my sleep quality is alot better as I feel I get enough oxygen into my body when I sleep (no more sleep apnea and I actually get my REM sleep). I'm back to light workouts (chinups only but I keep it before I reached my push limit). In a nutshell, take ice cream before any solids to numb the throat, wash your mouth all the time, talk less and take some panels if you gave bad headaches. Hope this helps

Outstanding and informative video! You have a relaxing and calming voice! ASMR-like!! 👍👍 I had mine removed at 34 due to chronic strep and a chronic abscessed tonsil that required draining (always the left tonsil - that pain was always excruciating). My recovery was very tough as my dr had to remove more tissue than usual due to lots of scar tissue due to my chronically abscessed tonsil. I can’t reiterate enough as to how important staying hydrated was for me. I literally kept bottles and bottles of water on both night stands and forced myself to drink water, despite the intense pain. Hydrocodone didn’t touch my pain. I couldn’t eat either, but forcing the liquids helped in the long run. Also, my dr at the time suggested chewing chewing gum as a way to both stimulate saliva (which stimulated swallowing sensations to aid in recovery) and it also helped relax my tense jaw muscles. You rarely see this suggestion, but I always tell others! 😀. Chew gum!! It helps👍👍. Also, as others have stated, while the recovery was tough me for, I don’t regret it at all!! My life has been so much better having very few throat problems after the surgery. I should have done it sooner.

I had my tonsilectomy surgery 12 days ago (2nd of July). I was very strict with my hydration, drinking somewhere between 3-6 litres a day. I worried that it was too much, but I REALLY like water! I would set alarms every 2-3 hours throughout the night to re-hydrate. Those were some of the worst times because it felt like drinking acid, but I forced myself to stick with it. I was told to eat a semi normal diet from the very beginning. My favourite foods were toast with butter and soft veggie based foods. For me, worst part was the ear ache, but I found the best relief was to eat. The oxycodon didn't seem to help the ears, but it would numb my throat well enough to tolerate food. As a result, I only lost 1kg (2ish pounds) in weight. I think I have been quite lucky, but discipline seems to have been the key. At 28 years old, I no longer snore, and actually need less sleep for the first time ever :).

The surgery is totally worth it. I'm going through recovery now. I had also had a deviated septum and turbinates trimmed/reduction at the same time so I had a double punch. What they don't tell you is the swollen uvula. That really affects the ability to sleep laying down or even sitting up. You're sleeping for a week more like hunched over because the swollen uvula can cause airway compromise and result in you choking in your sleep and waking up in a panic attack. I think I have about only 10 mm range of movement in my head where there is the perfect spot where I can also exhale without the uvula bothering me.

I'm 46 and I had them removed 3 weeks ago plus I had an my adenoids shave down. It wasn't as bad as I thought, heard, watched, or read. I had oxy with tylenol combo for pain, some magic syrup to numb my throat. If I took the pain meds every 4 hours or 6, I had little to no pain only discomfort. I really just drank Glucerna and drinkable yogurt for 4 days after surgery and room temperature water. The ice cold water, popsicles, ice chips made me feel worse. Week 3 and a couple of days I just feel some discomfort with certain foods like peanut butter it gets stuck and I have to drink something to wash it down. I stopped taking the pain meds about a week after surgery. My doctor gave me Prednisone liquid, a steroid for swelling. That was the worst the liquid tasted horrible, get the tablet it's small and doesn't hurt. All and all I'm happy I did it. Having chronic tonsillitis was so bad to the point that I went to emergency 3 times in one day I also had a panic attack the 2nd time, it felt like I was drowning in saliva and I started vomiting I could not keep fluids down at all. They kept sending me home with antibiotics until the 3rd emergency room doctor gave me prednisone.

Day 4 after removal of tonsils. Not yet had any painkillers (my choice, although I'm expecting to take them around day 7 if the pain is as really bad as they say). I'm making sure I'm drinking lot's of water. And yes it's uncomfortable, but no pain no gain. And it helps with the healing progress. Living off frozen yoghurt, frozen bananas, frozen grapes and of course ice cream. It does hurt to do these things, but the pain will be 10 fold if you don't and you dehydrate. Good luck to all those having it done or going through recovery. You've got this xx

Hi Gene i had my tonsils removed last month (November 15th) for the first 8 days the pain was unbearable i couldn’t eat or drink or swallow properly or even sleep. On the 8th night i had a bleed and was rushed to hospital by ambulance after calling the ENT ward they recommended to call 999, the hospital kept me in for 3 days and the 2nd day i had another really bad bleed worst than the first time which lasted an hour with really huge clots coming up every 10 minutes, a surgeon came in and rushed me straight to surgery after looking in my throat mid bleed and said “this is a mess”. I had my throat re-cauterised on November 24th and the next morning in hospital was completely back to normal no pain and eating drinking and swallowing fine for the first time in 9 days. Now my scabs have come off and pretty much healed, i have seen that there’s still large fragments of my tonsils left on my right side but my left side is perfect. Can my tonsil grow back overtime due to this?
@GeneLiuMD
5 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that you had such a tough recovery. This should not affect whether or not you have any remaining tonsil tissue or if any grows back. It really depends on what type of tonsil procedure you had...tonsillectomy = remove the entire tonsil, or tonsillotomy = remove most of the tonsil. You can check with your surgeon re: which was performed.

Couldn't eat salt & my main dish was vanilla ice cream, vanilla pudding & mash potatos without salt 😭 To this day (5 years later) i get sick to my somach if i even see vanilla ice cream. Haha!! Seriously a lifesaver. I just had my tonsils removed 6 days ago and I am in absolute hell, can't swallow or talk, nothing and have ear ache. Since the surgery I've been getting hiccups a lot. Someone advised that I should close my nose and then try to drink water at the same time. I try it and noticed that I can swallow better with 50% less pain. I immediately started eating a bit and drank water because I was so dehydrated at that point and I held my nose like that for 20 minutes just to get a break from the pain, even after releasing my nose, swallowing was much better for the next 30 min. I am not a doctor so I can't say at all why this maybe works but I advise that some of you maybe try it. No harm in trying. Ps. Does not really work for hiccups tho, only sometimes🤣

This is funny because after my tonsillectomy whenever I used to drink water(which used to pain like ANYTHING) it would go to my nose for some reason and doctor said this can happen after surgery for few weeks, but I found a trick that if drink with my nose pinched then the water won't go into my nose anymore while drinking.

Day 6 post op and I regret everything. I should have never gotten this operation. Water feels like razors and acid if it can even get past my tongue. My whole face and neck are locked up in aching pain. I have to pry open my jaw with both hands just to sip. Both ears hurt worse than any ear infection I've ever had. They gave me less than a 5 day supply of hydrocodone, not that it was strong enough to help anyways (liquid hydrocodone touching the scar area is the worst pain I've felt since I had a heart infection). So Tylenol and throat spray are all I have, and those don't feel any better than a placebo. Plus the spray tastes like formaldehyde. Don't get me started on the hiccups and coughing. I can't talk. I can't scream. The only thing I can do is cry.

Two weeks ago is still well within the healing process. The open, raw areas can take up to 3 weeks to really heal. The alterations in taste can happen from a long list of possible explanations. Most resolve in the first few weeks, but it's also possible that some of the issues linger for weeks longer. That having been said, it almost always resolves relatively quickly. There's usually not much to be done other than be patient. Definitely call your doctor, though, for what they would recommend as I can only give general information and you may have particular nuances to your individual case.

My jaw has to reopen gradually, and that affected what food I could eat too. That was in1976. I hope the newer techniques prevent overextending jaw muscles because that was the worst for both eating and talking!

Genuine question. Are video games okay afterwards?

Sure! But I guess anything that gets your blood pressure up too high is probably not the best idea...

I'm on day 5 and I had a sandwich (most of it- it started to hurt towards the end). Yesterday, I had half a slice of pizza and some cake. As long as I drink a lot of water with it and chew it really small, I'm not having any difficulty. Granted, I have heavy duty pain killers, but I'm really not feeling very bad at all. My constant body aches and fatigue are gone (i'm tired and sore from surgery, but that is explainable). I actually feel so much better than I did before surgery. I had my tonsils removed for tonsil stones, but they turned out to be extremely infected according to the pathology report. Guess I was just used to the pain. I think it was a great move and to those preparing for surgery- you may get lucky and have things go like my surgery. (When they woke me up, I remember talking about how spacious things were in my mouth- and I still find it to be true. This is going to be life changing!) I have a special needs kid who can't handle changes to his routine, so I was up taking him to his activities a day later. I am more tired and weak, but I just sleep when he is at school and crash at night.

Cold drinks are ok. As long as the caffeine doesn't get you too jittery or amped up from a blood pressure standpoint, it should generally be ok. But depending on your general health history and cardiovascular history, there isn't a universal answer.
