Did you know that pregnancy increases the likelihood of UTIs and lower urinary tract symptoms or LUTS? It turns out that LUTS are also more common after pregnancy and childbirth, during the postpartum period.
A research team based in the US found that over 40% of people were experiencing one or more LUTS one year postpartum, particularly, increased urinary frequency during the day, urinary incontinence, urinary urgency, frequently getting up to pee during the night, and bladder pain.
Importantly, this research team explored the relationship between LUTS and depressive symptoms. It was found that a higher risk of LUTS was associated with greater depressive symptoms and stress. However, promisingly, the negative effects were mitigated by psychosocial factors including social support.
Healthcare professionals should incorporate psychosocial factors and social support in addition to clinical testing and biological information.
