Hi there you two... I'm Amy here on The Hux Homestead and I'm beginning this year doing more planting to be able to can and more to store. We live in Eastern North Carolina. I'm going to be getting some seed potatoes and want to try it your way. I am hoping that mid March will be a good time to plant here... Last year I used all size buckets and pools to do my garden. It wasn't much this year we are trying to change our ways and start to can this is going to be a learning experience... thanks for all you share...

Our feed stores around South Georgia only seem to carry Red Pontiacs, and last year it was hard to find anybody who had a good crop. Everyone's potatoes suffered, closest disease I could find was "black leg" where mature plants fall over and wilt because of the stem being rotten at ground level. The seed potato would be rotten as well if you dug it up and not the first potato had grown in the roots. Luckily I had planted kennebecs as well.

Doesn't seem to matter how I do it. They do well. I can cut a potato into two or three pieces and plant them. I even dig bushels out of the compost pile that grow from peels. But we have great Sandy loam and tons of commercial growers here. It's perfect potato ground.

Chitting is only putting the potatoes under lights to sprout the eyes... LOL you can still cut them up like you did... I have been doing it like this for 45 years... I get 14 to 20 pounds from one pound of potatoes... 40 pounds of seed potatoes would yield 560 to 800 pounds my way... Try Chitting " sprouting " the potatoes then cutting them like you do... Also I plant one row of single Eye potato pieces about 16 to 18 inches apart and grow single stem plants that produce Jumbo Potatoes... You should try that also... I have found out over the years that the more stems you have the smaller the potatoes... A single stem plant will make 4 or 5 super size potatoes...

You can use any potato. Half of our varieties planted were simply taken from the kitchen pantry, bought some months earlier at the local grocer produce aisle. The only thing seed potato is ... is it's tested by a lab and certified disease free. Not so much with your grocery store bought 'taters.

Danny, youtube suggested this video. Now I see it was January and here we are at the end of July. May I ask? What do you think about planting now for a Fall crop. Just your educated guess. I'm in S. Calif, low desert, Riverside County. It's in triple digits in the afternoon, but we get into the 70s at night. It stays into the 90's through most of October. Then suddenly, a brief but beautiful Fall arrives; as we sometimes get a lighter frost mid November. I usually keep plants such as tomatoes in the ground until I hear there's a frost coming. Last year, it was mild all Winter and even some of my tomatoes didn't die back.

That’s how I start mine. I don’t ever have enough to have leftover of my own to use for seed as I’ve never planted that many. I buy a bag of organic red potatoes at the store, let them grow eyes, cut them as you do and set them out to dry. A few years back I did them in the ground but I did not keep them as mounded as they needed to be. We have hard rocky ground here so last year I tried them in a pallet bin. It did not work well. We got a lot of rain and I think they mostly rotted. And we also probably used too much straw and leaves and didn’t layer in enough soil.
@DeepSouthHomestead
6 жыл бұрын
kimberly hilliker Grocery store potatoes are not recomended for planting even if they are organic.Most organic still has sprout nip sprayed on them so they dont sprout for a set number of days. Then when they do sprout they dont grow as well. Look for seed potatoes at a feed store or order them for best results. Potatoes do not need leaves around them it will cause them to stay to wet and rot. Thanks

My father once grew potatoes from peelings! He had heard it could be done, so he had to try it and it did work. Just like you say, though, the yield isn't much if you don't have a good bit of "meat" on it to live off of. I took your advice on those "resprouting" spuds I asked you about and I've left them in. I never found any actual potatoes under there so I left them over the winter as an experiment to see if they do something this spring. It seems that potatoes is one of them things that you can grow the plant easy, it's getting a good crop that is the tricky part!

Potato. Fully 1/3 our calories for 1/20th the work/effort/resources of anything else out in our annual gardens. The only thing better in our plots are Sweet Potato. Even less work. Less fertility. Fewer bugs. NO disease (barring the occasional Scurf, which is never more than cosmetic here) and they store longer. Folks: if you dial in on 'Taters and Sweet 'Taters and nail your production down tight ... you ain't never gonna starve.
