Thankyou for this vid i have been searching ALL over for one simple video comparing nitrate/ammonia cycle before and after pothos. There are tons of videos on using pothos, and this is the onle vid with a test

In a separate tote add ammonia to the water (or fish water) and keep steady light on. Use airstones for oxygenation/movement. Some leaves will die but more will grow underwater. Submerged leaves will grow smaller but roots will take off along with the vines. It can be done! Pothos has to be conditioned this way first for full immersion. I've grown pothos underwater in fish tanks. There is always some dieback when adjusting but then it will grow. Just clip bad parts and leave submerged.

Great video! You had some really good results. What a great little tank this is! I wish my pH was a tad lower for at least some of my tanks. Nice job!

🙏! I don't expect the buffering to last more than a couple of months, and then the pH should go back up to about 7.4. I really like what pothos did!

I'm currently running three 29 gallon tanks that all have deep substrate (potting soil capped with sand about 4 inches deep in total), a few Amazon swords, and Pothos growing on top of the tank. No filters, though I do run a UV filter in the summer, the warmer temps can cause green water without it. Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate have been consistently at 0 for about 3 years now. One tank has a stable population of 9 to 12 mollies, one has 9 Colombian Tetras, and one has a single three-spot Gourami. I rarely do water changes.

@@PlantedElement Thanks, just figured I'd throw it out there. The effectiveness of a deep sand/soil substrate for denitrification in combination with houseplants was a huge breakthrough for me and there aren't a whole lot of videos about it. The hobby is a lot more enjoyable when the tank practically takes care of itself. I'd probably skip aquatic plants altogether and just use immersed Pothos if I were setting them up today, they can be algae magnets without CO2 if the lighting is too bright, but otherwise they're the easiest tanks I've ever set up.

the pothos is not the reason for ammonia lowering, this is being done by bacteria in the filter, hence why nitrates have skyrocketed. bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite. if the pothos were using the ammonia as a food source to grow then the results would be a lot different.
@PlantedElement
2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Plants absolutely absorb ammonia. Pothos is known to do this well. You're correct that bacteria do this more efficiently and should be the main focus in creating a healthy environment, but the whole point of this was that having a new setup with NO established bacterial base would not have such a drastic change. Nitrogen compounds, including nitrate and ammonia are released from new aquarium soil and in this case having a plant in the early stage helped reduce ammonia.

The potho absorb the nitrate ONLY. also, even thos nitrate in present, doesn't mean ur cycle has finished. Water change needs to be done still until there no ammonia and nitrite present.

@@Darth_Raider_ Actually plants absorb Ammonia nitrate which is just Ammonia. They remove the ammonia which bypasses the nitrogen cycle.

moss balls are extremely slow growing and hence are extremely poor in terms of nutrient export
