This trail starts just south of Ochoco Divide at the top of the McKay Creek drainage. It quickly crosses the divide then follows the old McKay cattle drive seven miles down into the Potlid Creek drainage to the Trout Creek drainage, passing along the western side of Bull Mountain. The trail's northern terminus is Forest Service Road 2725.
The trail is accessed at either the Potlid North Trailhead or the Potlid South Trailhead.
The trail winds through open ponderosa pine forest with full views of the Northern Cascades, from Mt. Jefferson to Mt Hood (and on exceptionally clear spring days to Mt Adams). As the trail descends into the Potlid Creek drainage, the forest cover changes to include lodgepole pine with mountain mahogany added to the mix as exposure and soil type allow. The trail follows ridgebacks, so either bring plenty of water or allow time for steep climbs to the creek.
NOTE: This trail is not maintained and is not easy to follow. Yellow wooden diamonds and white plastic diamonds indicate route but the track is non-existant in places and it can be very difficult to find the next trail marker. Still, the ride is entertaining enough if you like challenging routes. It is 6.6 miles one way and there is a 2,232 feet of elevation gain/loss depending on which way you go-up or down. A shuttle from one trailhead to the other is suggested.
