I’m with ya on Canadian peat moss. People get a little crazy and preachy about peat, but I use it and I’m not sorry.🙂

It’s always good to hear I’m not alone on this subject. Thanks for the support. I’ve done my research. I think many people just hear it is evil and don’t look into it.

Thanks, I loved this information! There are so many variables in soil it gets mind-boggling. I'm off to Home Depot to ask for exploded minerals now because that's the only way I will be referring to them from now on 😄

I like the idea of mixing the cinnamon with the vermiculite. I wonder if this would be a good idea with Dalhia tubers when storing?

I have mixed cinnamon into my dahlia storage vermiculite. I’m not sure if it made a difference as I don’t normally have trouble with rotting tubers.

I was wondering the same thing. Mine have not even sprouted. I think I may have to start them over as they were a few years old.

Have you ever tried adding alfalfa pellets into your mix?

No I haven’t. I recently saw someone showing that (ripe tomato farms?) it was an interesting addition I’d never heard before.

In the fall of 2021 I applied some to the soil. Then in the spring I added a bit more when I planted my seedlings into the ground. Everything was so healthy and grew bigger than I'd ever seen before! I'll be doing that from now on. I'd be interested to see how things grow from seed when Alfalfa pellets are added to the seed potting mix. I might do an experiment lol!

WRT using peat moss vs coco coir, what people don't realize is there is no such thing as a "sustainable product". Sustainability refers to the rate at which a resource is used, not the resource itself. As long as there's money to be made off it, the production of a resource will increase until it becomes environmentally destructive.

Very true. I also like to consider the impact on the humans creating the product and what it takes to get it to me. There is much to be considered in the use of all products from how it is sourced, produced, managed, shipped, how long it can be/is used, and more.

I am still on the fence with peat based potting media. No, I am not going to wag my finger at anyone that is for it's use or against it. Whoa does that make me pragmatic?!? Maybe not, but there are arguments that can be debated ad nauseum.

It’s good to look at all the sides and make your own informed choices. Its great to hear your thoughts on this highly debated subject.

First, let me say I do enjoy I’m your channel and I have followed you for a long time. That being said, harvesting peat is extremely destructive to the environment and takes decades and decades to grow back. It releases a ton of carbon dioxide as it is a carbon sink. Cococoir may seem like it’s worse than a local resource due transportation, packing, etc, but it isn’t.
