How to Sculpt Resin without a Mold - No Mold Pour & Sculpt
Technique:
Prep a work surface with a sheet of vinyl or any medium that Resin will not stick to (I used a sheet of holographic window cling)
Create a barrier on the sheet, using spray foam in the desired shape (using this method, you are able to make a very large piece)
Mix resin per manufacturer's instructions
Pour the mixed clear resin on the prepped surface to fill the barrier you created
Use a heat gun to disperse bubbles and warm the resin
Apply drops of alcohol ink in your desired pattern to the resin (I used a circular pattern and primarily varying shades of blue alcohol ink and a little silver)
Once all of the alcohol ink is laid, swirl the colors in a spiral format
I was curious if I could get a piece this size to bloom, so I added white paste mixed with resin in a blooming design (this is not necessary and did not really work the way I was hoping, but it did give the piece more depth)
Allow curing only until the piece is no longer tacky to the touch. Do not let the resin cure fully or you will not be able to shape/sculpt the resin
Once the resin is no longer tacky and is still flexible/bendable, remove the foam from the perimeter and use scissors to trim around the edges
If necessary, use a sander to smooth the edges
For this piece, I used a vase to assist with shaping/sculpting. Place a piece of saran wrap (or similar medium) on top of the resin to protect the design
Use the vase to help sculpt the resin into the desired shape. You may also use packing or painter's tape to help hold pieces in place.
I molded the resin tightly around the vase initially. Before it was fully cured, I removed the vase and allowed the resin to fan out naturally; creating a beautiful bowl shape. If you want an actual vase shape, just be sure to use a vase without curves and allow the piece to cure to full hardness. If you use a piece with curves, it will be difficult, if not impossible to get the vase out once the resin has cured
Use an oil-based metallic pen around the edges to give the piece a finished and elegant look
That is it! You have now created a one-of-a-kind sculpture without a mold.
