All amerifats get mad because we simply, and most of all, calmly explain them why its stupid and illogocal to call it alluminum. I was aware of being a "joke" but we all know deep inside americans mean it and are proud of their patriotism, this is just a way of showing it. Even when its just a joke. It's really pathetic.

It's actually quite intriguing how it came to be - first starting with Sir Humphry Davy's not being able to make a decision: Sir Humphry made a bit of a mess of naming this new element, at first spelling it alumium (this was in 1807) then changing it to aluminum, and finally settling on aluminium in 1812.
@ptorq
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is the one I think IUPAC got just flat wrong. "Sulfur" is self-evidently a better spelling than "sulphur" and I can live with "caesium" because the name was based on a Greek word that really is spelled with the "ae", but if we're going to say "aluminium" on the basis of "consistency" (it can't be precedence, because then it would be "alumium", which I have less of a problem with than "aluminium"), we should also change the names of two other elements to "platinium" and "molybdenium".
@swirlingabyss
2 жыл бұрын
@@ptorq My issue is the oxide naming. Titanium oxide is titania. Zirconium oxide is zirconia. Lithium oxide is lithia. Calcium oxide is calcia. Etc. Etc. Etc. The oxide of "aluminium" would be "aluminia," but no one says that because that's wrong. The oxide is alumina, therefore the metal is aluminum. I will not switch no "aluminium" until they change the name of the oxide to "aluminia" for consistency.

Ben Dover When a mere kid, who doesn't even understand something so fundamental as the benefits of the metric system of units refers to himself as a scientist, they need to be humbled. The English system of units has no logic behind it; it's a hodgepodge of units developed over centuries from all varieties of industry, just thrown together. It has redundant units (oz, toz, lbm, slug - in, mi, yard), confusing units (lbm vs lbf, oz vs fluid oz), and requires conversion factors which needlessly complicate equations. The SI system pulls them all together in a coherent fashion. The units are designed to work together from the start. And don't tell me he's obviously being sarcastic. It's not obvious in any way. Murican's love pushing stupid concepts.

Just because you say that American English is adapted from English doesn't mean that the original word couldn't have been retained with American english and modified later in the british English system. In this case specifically, The man who discovered the metal, H. Davy, named it aluminum in 1812, it was changed to aluminium to fit the British English rules, so in this case the Americans have the initial spelling of the word and the brits have the modified spelling. On a further note, the U.S.A is one of the only countries that does not have a language committee that actively updates and corrects its language so the language has been unchanged in 200 years since its intentional shift from british English; whereas British English has made several revisions, so it is impossible to use the chicken or the egg logic for the differences between American English or british English. You instead have to look at the history of the word itself.

@ 2:38 Aluminium is the English way to spell/pronounce Aluminium, so not mispronounced. Americans are the only people who call Aluminium, Aluminum. Here in Norway our expected time in school is 18 years... And also look at politics, America has had 0 female head of state, in Norway we have had several ruling queens, 2 female prime ministers and several female leaders of political parties and members of the government and leaders of different ministries in general in our over 1200 year old story as a country ':)

Walrus Weekly Who gives a fuck if the president, prime minister or regent have a vagina, except the US and some un-educated countries in the East...? We all know through science that a woman is wiser in her choices than a man, all because a woman actually think about the outcome and consequences of her choices 10 times more and longer than a man and because a man's frontal lobe is developed way later than a woman's... The Earth has been ruled by men since day 1 of modern humans and it has been nothing but conflicts and wars... But the US is actually the least developed and educated country of all of the wealthy nations in this world so you're too stupid to get it... Expected time an American spends in school is 8 years... In Norway the expected time is 18 years... Norway is one of the countries in the world with most students taking higher education with bachelor's, master's and doctor's degree based on the total population of the country... I'm also aiming for higher education and a master's degree... We basically take too much education, but for us it's fine because all education is free and it keeps the good rumor Norwegian universities have in the world ;) Who is it that takes care of the house and family when the man is out? Who is it that takes care of you when you're ill and lying on the couch screaming for another cup of tea because you're too lazy to drag yo nasty ass to the kitchen? Who is it that stood up and fought for you, your safety and dreams when you grew up? It's the woman, your mom, your wife, your sister, your grandma, your great-grandma... Nothing in this world is stronger than the bond and love between a mother and her child! A woman with children and alot of experience in housekeeping, cooking and ridiculous demands from her husband could easily run a country way better than a man who just buy himself to the ultimate psoition and power! (Trump)
