I use whatever is necessary to clear traffic. In close to ten years of working on/with emergency vehicles, I've found that wail works best for longer distances, yelp works for moderate traffic conditions and on initial approach to intersections, hyper-yelp (phaser) on final approach to intersections with plenty of airhorn interjected. It also depends on time of day. This particular response brought me through a school zone as the students were arriving so I had to be extra careful.

Air horn sounds like shit all it does is take away from the siren might even get you whacked going through intersections

10 years? Yet you make many mistakes. 1:05 When there is a clear lane, you must take it. 1:55 You decide to go into a lane where a vehicle is stopped waiting to make a left turn while traffic is flowing in the other lanes. Your behavior prompted the driver in front of you to make an illegal and possibly dangerous maneuver.

Ok so this is probably a dumb question but what happens if you get to the station after the trucks have left like in this case?

In this case, our SOG was met for response criteria so I was on standby for any additional requests for service.

4th Line All Star while I was there the rules were that you had to complete your entire probationary period and pass a kind of "final exam" which was both written and practical on topics like actual firefighting, department organization, medical, and other stuff.

Ya all these guys are right you should wear your seat belt you don't want to create another accident, but it's understandable I mean who actually buckles up when they jump on the engine aside from maybe the driver and officer but everyone else is suiting up so I can see why you would forget.

I am told that we are not to run any red lights or stop signs on a run, but yet every video I see on youtube they are running them. Is the laws just different where I am or you just run them and hope not to get pulled over and that the officer understands? I personally will come to a complete stop at any red light or stop sign and if all traffic is yielding then I proceed, but I'm told that i'm not SUPPOSED to do that ether.
@ChiefsFireman

Everywhere is different. I live in Kansas and we are almost on par with Missouri, Both states have a law that states any approved POV using Lights and a Siren is considered an emergency vehicle and can proceed as one. Therefore we have the right of way, Can proceed through intersections (Stop/Check first!) and stop signs and go above the posted speed limit so long as we do not jeopardize the public's safety or our own.
@foxtrot5elb

Laws in your area probably vary from mine. In SC we are considered full emergency vehicles so long as we comply with the other parts of the law about what equipment is required.
@investigatorsf

when you hit that air horn the sound dont penetrate vehicles !!!!! just change tones or buy a real loud separate air horn , i think i will do a video proving my point maybe then everyone will stop using it and make it safer...............

+MICHA3L13JONES At that point the roadway was clear enough that I felt constant siren usage wasn't necessary but state law says the siren must be on so I made due by playing "NYPD" with the siren.
