As a dessicant, my Grandmother use to take a 4 inch square of tightly woven cheese cloth and put a table spoon of cheap white rice in the middle and tie it up. She didn't have access to silica packs and this works perfectly with oxy absorbers!!! Just a thought.

I'm 72 and live by myself, I only hit the grocery store once or twice a month, I freeze a gallon of milk in 5 quart mason jars, after it freezes I vacuum seal it and place it in gallon storage bags (bags only as insurance in case of jar breakage), I mainly use milk for cold cereal and baking, for baking I use powdered milk. I thaw out a jar of milk for the next two days usage for cereal. I've found for me 8 wks is the longest I like to use the frozen milk, freezing is a method to extend milk life over repeated trips to the store.

Girl,you sound like me,lol I love my cereal and cold milk and I freeze my milk in plastic gt. Juice jugs.They are on narrow size and fit well in my freezer.If I catch milk on sale I buy several and freeze them in my juice jugs.they do take a bit of time to thaw in fridge so I take something deep and place my milk in water for couple Hrs. and the water stays very cold as it thaws out some.Have a good day.

Yes. I rarely buy whole milk in the gallon. I live alone also and simply don't drink milk, I only cook with it (evaporated milk because it stays in the can). However, I recently bought regular whole milk and decided to pour it in different containers and freeze it. Definitely a good idea.

I was just at Walmart today and they had a bag of powdered whole milk. I checked the ingredients and it is just milk and vitamins A and D. I wonder about how economical it is though. The bag was 39.5 oz and cost $12.44, so about $0.31 per ounce. It makes 32 servings or about 2.25 gallons, which works out to about $5.50 a gallon. That's about $2 per gallon more than liquid whole milk. Of course, it is shelf stable so you don't have to worry about it going sour if you repackage it as you suggest. I bought a bag and will give it a shot!

When I was growing up, I was the youngest when everybody graduated, I was in the 7th grade. With all my siblings graduating, my parents got rid of the goats our main source of milk. My mother switched to powdered milk, which I thought taste of absolutely horrible. Then a friend of hers told her that if she added powdered creamer in a cup and mixed it up until it was dissolved she could add it to her gallon of milk and it would make it taste a lot better. Well, it did but it tasted best when it’s very cold. However, I have found it putting a tablespoon of creamer in powder milk along with powdered milk in dry cake mixes, At this time, I also add my homemade powdered eggs. Homemade powdered eggs are excellent and baking, but horrible and eating. !I can vacuum seal it and when it’s time to make the cake , I just have to add water. I tried it and I baked a cake couldn’t tell the difference. So I have stored plenty of cake mixes with the added powdered milk and powdered eggs.

I use evaporated milk for coffee or tea, but not to replace whole milk. I use dry whole milk as a creamer and to keep small jars of milk in the refrigerator. For hot chocolate I add powder to hot milk, with cacao & a pat of butter. If you drink low fat milk buy whole milk and fill a pint jar with equal parts of water & milk. If that's still to fat, add less milk and more water. (Note: whole milk costs the same as low fat; the dairy uses milk fat for cream & butter products.) Thanks for all your tips...great advice.☺️

After opening a vacuum sealed jar, do you put on a new lid before resealing? In all my understanding of those lids, once you vacuum seal with them they can not be used to vacuum seal again as the seal is essentially broken and will not seal properly after. I can actually attest to that after using them for some LTS items. Very informative and valuable info on the powdered milk storage and I like your system for once a month groceries. I'm going to work towards that since I now live in a more rural area and stores are not as convenient to get to.

We have meat goats that we milk our doe’s. I want to start dehydrating the milk and storing it to use later. We do NOT pasteurize it is raw milk that is strained through a cheese cloth and strainer to catch any impurities. Goats milk is already lean milk (lower butterfat percentage compared to Holstein cows) and pasteurizing you loose a LOT of the nutrients from milk. With that being said, I’m trying to dehydrate the milk to store for the times we want to rehydrate to feed baby goats or other baby animals that need milk (we donate to local shelters when they have kittens or puppies that need milk). I want to make the most out of our shelf life any tips in how I can do that?

I don't have any experience with preserving goat milk, so I unfortunately don't have any tips to share. :(

I use canned coconut milk. Add water to a non fat thickness and it doesnt have coconut flavor . Tastes exactly like non fat milk

@foodprepguide

The brands we use - linked in the description box - are just milk with no additives. So yes, soy-free. 🙂 But definitely check the label for any others you may find in stores.

Silica picks will not cancel out anO2 absorber
@foodprepguide
4 ай бұрын
Most brands of oxygen absorbers require a little bit of moisture to activate. For those types, a desiccant will cause the O2 absorber to not activate and therefore not work. That said, there are some O2 absorbers that are "self reactive," and those will work just fine in the presence of a desiccant pack.
@g-whiz286

All of the oxygen absorbers I have and use employ finely powdered iron (Fe). A small amount of water is necessary to initiate the reaction into ferric oxide (Fe2O3) or "rust". Without water, the powered iron and oxygen will just sit dormant.

Not good enough. We need to store milk powder long term. 10 years and more. A food saver will work. I also used Milk alternative powder. ( Whey). It tastes good and one will use 1/2 cup of it to make a quart. Great for drinking or other uses. Thanks for the info. Canned goods last 15 years and more. Fact.

New sub. And I enjoyed every one of the 9 minutes. I also store Nido Whole Milk powder, exclusively for making InstantPot yogurt (strained for thick Greek-style). I also use the Nido powder straight in my morning coffee. One thing I have begun experiencing is that the milk powder gets "grainy" in the coffee, and sometimes soft little "pudding" type balls drop to the bottom of the cup. Is anyone else experiencing this? There's no change in the taste at all. Just these little floaties. P.S. I'll start breaking down the can of NIDO I bought just yesterday! Vacuum sealing it is!❤

1. My maternal gma put evaporated milk, straight from can, onto hot cereals and called it cream along wit butter & sugar., delicious: mush, oatmeal, malto-meal. 2. When cooking calls for milk, I sub 25%(1/4) of required amount for evap milk to give richer flavor: 2oz (1/4 cup) of 1 cup (8 oz). 3. Mom would sub 25-33% in homechurned ice cream.

I worked on a remote island northwest of Hawaii. Any kind of milk was a treat. While I could smell and taste the difference, not having anything and drinking fresh water made from seawater was far worse. Suggest your kids understand that there are worse things that can happen in life.

I also use a brake-bleeder pump to seal my mason jars. And since I’m a heavy milk drinker and hate to run out, I’ve been freeze-drying whole milk from my local market. But very recently I started buying delicious, super healthy unpasteurized milk from a local Amish family and now I’m very excited to see how it feeze-dries and reconstitutes 😁

I use my freeze drier to make powder milk by using whole milk. Last over 20 years . Place milk into your trays and freeze milk in the freezer once frozen then place into freezer dryer once done then place in food processor, to turn into powder then package into jars or into milar bags . Be sure to take air out of the jars each time you open jar
