Thanks to all for suggesting other power banks as well. One I just found (but have not tested) may be a compromise between the two: The TACKLIFE T8 CAR JUMP STARTER has more cranking amps (800 as opposed to 650 for the Audew and 750 for the Eliminator), but also has a 12V 10A outlet, which means it should be able to charge more powerful appliances with a 12V adapter! It also has a 2-year warranty. I have included a link in the video description. Thanks! SP

Yes you did give me something to think about. I tend not to be so thorough in choosing a product. I just run to the big box store and grab what I need. Thanks. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I think you are a smart fella, but I believe in the real world you would be inside your vehicle when assembling the power bank to jump your car. Gloves would be off.

The typical midsize automobile requires in the neighborhood of 400 cold cranking amps, plus or minus 50 or so. Your truck on the other hand may take 600 to 700 CCA. A diesel engine uses even more. The CCA of a battery is a measure of how much energy it can discharge in a short period of time, usually tested for 20 seconds, and doesn't necessarily indicate it's total energy capacity. If the intended service of the Power Bank is an emergency jump start for your car or truck, then yes, the more CCA it's rating the better it will crank your engine. If your intention is to power small 12 volt devices or to supply an inverter, then total amp hours (AHr) is a more important rating than CCA. By-the-way, an AGM battery *IS* a lead/acid battery but it has an (Absorbent) fiberGlass Mat inside the cell to hold the acid in place regardless of the battery's orientation - acts like a wick. Repeated deep discharging of an AGM battery is just as destructive over time as it is with conventional automotive batteries. Sulfur becomes permanently attached to the lead plates with deep discharging in both conventional and AGM batteries. Most AGM batteries are physically designed to withstand deep discharging with fewer plates (lower CCA) but thicker plates (higher AHr), but they still build up in Lead Sulfide with each discharge.

Ok, now i'm confused! ... i followed your link to the one you like but havent reviewed. . . In the ad it has you put in your vehicle to know if the charger will 'fit' your vehicle. . . What if we buy the one that fits our van and come across someone else in a different brand van or car who needs a battery boost .. how do we know if our booster will be compatible with their vehicle? What will happen if they aren't compatible but we try it anyway?
@prepperjonpnw6482

Brianna B it’s not actually brand/make/model specific even though it seems that way. What it IS specific to is CCA for that vehicle. I drive a large RAM 4x4 my neighbour drives a PT Cruiser. They are both made by Dodge but have VERY different CCA needs. A booster that works for my truck will also work on my neighbours car but a booster made for his car won’t work on my truck. His car only needs 400 CCA where as my truck needs 650 CCA. As for diesel HUGE difference! My other vehicle is a Chevy Suburban 2500 6.5 ltr Turbo diesel and has 2 batteries each rated at 1,000 CCA Hope that helps Cheers mate and happy trails

Just a note which others may have covered: A power bank for charging your devices and a vehicle battery booster are quite different. The booster for starting a car has lower capacity/higher amp-output cells to give a lot of amps over a short period. Boosters also have big mosfets to handle the high amp draw, making them more expensive. While some may have usb ports for charging devices, they are not ideal for that purpose. The power banks for charging your devices have higher capacity/lower amp cells meant to store and hold lots of amp hours to slowly charge your devices. They don't need the big wires and mosfets used to jump-start a vehicle, so they cost much less, store more power over time, but they don't put out 12 volts like a booster, just the 5 volts your devices need.. Best to have both and reserve your booster for emergencies like a dead car battery.
@mperdue12

Actually the boosters are designed to do both. Most have circuitry that allows you to switch into "Jumper mode" when it is needed and stays a charger the rest of the time.

Excellent review...I bought an AGM automotive battery because an automotive store tested my car battery and said it was bad. I kept the old battery and after I left the store the same problem occurred and it ended up that the battery wasn’t the problem!...3 years ago and still going strong. I waited too long to return it so I keep the AGM battery in my car (I know it’s heavy but I don’t have to carry it). I’ve boosted countless cars and I use it as an auxiliary power source (using clips for 12v applications and a 150 watt inverter for 120v applications.) We also had a power outage at home and used it to power our modem and router which worked really well.

Recent subscriber here. I fulltime in a 22ft travel trailer and I've been on the road 7 months. In my first 4 months I've killed 3 flooded lead acid batteries. One in my truck and 2 in my camper. I have the noco genius boost which looks to be the same as your eliminator. I haven't had to use it as a jump starter yet, but I use the light a lot and I use it to charge/power my tablet. It will power my 12v fan for a long time. Handy tool.

There are AC power banks out there. I love them, I have two. Especially with a lot of coffee shops not having a lot of plugs available or blocking/hiding plugs. I also use it while living in my van. When the van is running I have an inverter, but once it's off the power banks are invaluable. I can't afford the solar system I want yet and a few good power banks plus a 12v inverter have made all the difference in living in my van full time.

I am a van dweller and I have two of these that are sold at Harbor Freight. I originally bought them for emergency jump starts but keep them around for emergency power. I will say I have used them plenty of times to help jump start others and almost every time end up amazing the people I help. It seems a lot of people don't know they exist. They are portable so when power is needed remotely I usually go for one of the packs instead of getting out a cord. They have become a fall back for auxiliary power. It's a good feeling to have something you can use until the morning instead of troubleshooting in the middle of the night.

Another great camping tip, Slim! I have used some smaller (at least in size - USB battery packs for some time. But they are not car starters. Still they come in very handy for a multitude of things. Some years ago, before Li-Ion batteries came into prominence, I had a starter pack that could start a car. It was a Gel or AGM cell type and was probably three times bigger than what those are now. It was handy to power 12v devices, but a little too weak to start a car if the battery was completely dead. I used it until it no longer held a charge. For the US viewers, Harbor Freight carries one very similar to the Audew for the same price. Actually, I think the Audew is a little nicer, but if you need one, HF is almost as common as a Dollar General or Starbucks these days. One on every corner!
@wildbill23c

The larger ones they make now I believe still use those same deep cycle type batteries in them, and if you feel like taking one apart you can easily replace the battery in them....I'm not sure how these little pocket sized Li-Ion type jump packs are, probably can't replace the battery in them, but I don't have one to take apart and find out. I have a larger Peak branded one that has an AGM battery in it, its also a power inverter and air compressor...none of which work all that great, and even after a full charge it still doesn't seem to maintain a charge very long when you use the inverter or compressor...so trusting it to start my car...I think not. I'll definitely be getting one of these smaller Lithium based jump packs soon, and they're small enough to put in your daily carry bag.

Both are outstanding and while they haven't had to use them to start their vehicles, I've used both on occasion to start my 2005 Jeep TJ Rubicon or as my wife refers to it, my expensive mistress. Easy to use, worth every dime, and gives me peace of mind for my family. Enjoyed your video but I think your hands on test in the winter was flawed. If I need a power bank, I'm not going to be in a hurry like on the side of the road. I'll get the kit and if it's bad weather, sit inside while I get everything set, then step out and do what's needed.

I use the lithium Boost HD GB70 2000 Amp - it will jump start up to 6. 0 liters engines, even "Cold below zero" diesel engines on Tractors that haven't run in 6-8 months. Plus, it is easy to access and operate in the Cold. It has reverse polarity protection, and an integrated LED flashlight with seven light modes (low, medium, high, flashing, strobe and emergency SOS). I recharge my smartphone, tablet, and other USB devices when my other battery packs run low. It can recharge from any powered USB port or one of those wall USB/110v chargers. I have one, not handy at this time to give brand or amp hour rating, etc, but I didn't buy it for big engines. It did start a big ford V-8 with a weak battery, battery wouldn't turn engine over, but wasn't dead. So rather than starting amps, buy the one rated for the engine you may need to start. Mine came with a cigar lighter cord for common accessories using such a cord, most don't. You might be able to buy such a cord that plugs in where the jumper cables would have plugged in, for some power packs. For what it is worth. I agree with other followers of Slim, he does a great job on everything he puts on You Tube.

I just set up a 100ah AGM battery in a marine battery box, for a home emergency power supply. Have a 100w portable solar cell unit on order too. These power boosters sound like a great idea, I think much safer than jumper cables, when you have a dead battery its not always conveniently dead in your driveway or other safe location so being able to get your vehicle going on your own without help is a huge must. For a small car, or SUV it won't be too much on those little boost packs, but a full size diesel dual battery equipped pickup on the other hand it may not work. I'd still carry jumper cables though, and if you are pulling a travel trailer many have their own batteries, so in a pinch you could always pull that trailer battery up to your tow vehicle and jump start your vehicle that way.

That battery was krusty !!!!!! Pet peeve of mine. You did mention that you cleaned the terminals. A good die-electric grease will help prevent that. Regular cleaning and maintenance will mean you will be less likely to have the corrosion in the first place. Pouring coke on it is just another mess to deal with on top of the dead battery. Dry terminals will corrode quickly. Keeping them "wet" with a grease or few drops of oil goes a long way. I have dealt with several batteries in corrosive environments, crop dusters, salt air, etc. Many times the "dead" battery isn't. The corrosion just prevents electron flow and people buy a battery they didn't need. I hope that helps a few out there. Some cordless tool companies have adapters or radios with adapters that also have usb ports to operate or charge small devices. I keep putting off getting one for my ridgid 18v tools. Probably time I get one and have a little more versatility for my investment.

I've got many vehicles started by simply disconnecting the battery cleaning the battery terminal posts and terminals and reinstalling the cables...its one of the larger causes of no-start conditions...the other is people leaving lights on, stuff plugged into charging ports,....oh and the notorious complete lack of maintenance LOL.

Stanley 500 1000 has 2 usb and a cig lighter port + a built in 120 psi air compressor. It also has a flashlight , but is rather bulky. I use it to go car camping. Stanley products have never failed me!

I've thought about getting a power bank but I've always been a bit weary about the standard ones you can find on electronic sites since a lot of them promise more than they can keep, but this seems to be a better option and it's not too expensive either. Thanks! Also, totally beautiful daughter you got there, Slim. You did a good job ^^

I have been researching traveling across America as a women. it is about time for me to set sail, so if these comments are out of order, I have started backwards, LOL. will start with your 1st video. You are one funny guy, full of mega information. Please keep up the great videos. :).The closer I get, the fear is greater. (excuse: the first time doing anything, out of the norm, (kinda like stage fright) any additional advice would be more than welcome. Again thanks for being YOU!!!! Your Michigander follower:)

Just came back to watch the video again, as I am now in the market for such a device....in watching again, you talk about hooking everything up while standing outside in the snow.....one could also sit in the car and get the device ready for connecting, then hop out and connect to battery; especially in a downpour this might be the better option......

Just an idea here. Harbor Freight usually has one of everything so if you use it as one of the baseline models in testing it should be available to all everywhere they roam however it might rank. As always, your mileage may vary! I've usually had pretty good luck and they do have a lower price point. Thanks for your work!

Great reviews and a fine video! I would however personally distinguish between power banks (for phones, tablets etc) and power banks which can also jump start a car or van. I think they fall into 3 categories - power banks, jump starters, and jump starters with USB ports.

Hey Slim, that was cruel of you putting your daughter on this. I completely forgot what this video was all about! She is absolutely beautiful. Anyway, great video. I heard on other comparisons that the Audew was a good item but has it's flaws, as you pointed out. They are a necessity to have around in case of emergency.

Stop complimenting his daughter on her looks! This is how you create a princess too lazy to fix her battery or bother knowing about cars when her own father is so knowledgeable. If I had a dad like Potatohead, I'd drain his brain into mine. Beauty is irrelevant and not deserving of respect. Its like having brown hair. Respect and praise should come from ability not winning the genetic lottery. Potatohead has not cracked the whip hard enough as a father. Why is this princess allowed to get away with a filthy battery which is depleted? Dad comes to the rescue. Bad Dad. Bad Daughter. This is how you have American women who cannot cook a single dish, or clean anything well, cannot fix a darn thing in the house, get fat after delivering one baby, and then divorce the dad and collect alimony and child support forever. We are creating a whole generation of useless entitled princesses. No compliments. Whip. Work. No cars till you know how to maintain them. Today its Dad. Tomorrow its Hubby. A life of dependency on men. Real liberation means women have to do their own grease work.

Concerning the light functions, the Audew seems to be better in that you don't have to cycle through a bunch of settings on the light, but that also makes it worse than the Motor Master if it doesn't have a low light setting, because it wouldn't last very long.

I do not even have a camper but still watch. Mostly for the beauty of the places you stay. But I do food storage, may I make a suggestion, crank radio flashlight. Separate or together. A good option for those. You may not even have to run a inside light.
@SlimPotatohead

I actually had a crank radio, however just recently replaced it with a more efficient lithium-ion. Yes the cranks work well in an emergency, but the one I had did not hold a charge long and was bulky, while the lithium radio goes for hours and was tiny. Will however see if there are better new versions out there. Thanks! SP

Nice review and very nice video... Anyway, if for me I'll get a bigger capacity power bank than these. I got one from china with 250000 mah (Li Fe) capacity, with 1000cca on it and it works great. It can power up 2unit 5w leds for more than 12hrs and still have 50% left and able to restart a diesel hilux. The best thing is that, it can recharge it through cigarette lighter socket or 240v in 3 hrs . It also can power up a small tv and a cooler abt 3 hrs.

I don't know about the products, but I liked the Audew case better. To bad they couldn't combine the flashlights, a bright beam looking farther back and a wide beam would be better to see if a bear or bigfoot is around you.

I'll stick with my Gooloo. Hard case, 2 mesh pouches inside with a protective pad that is between the Gooloo pouch and the cords etc. pouch. It charges on cigarette lighter or 110. The display screen I can feel easily in the dark. The ON is at right bottom of screen to turn on display to see power %, see line that says cables on wrong. When cables plugged in "boost" shows and you push boost button on left lower corner. Flashlight is top right button. Click once - flashlight, twice strobe and third time is "sos". It charges my cell phone and Kindle. Also, powers 12 volt appliances such as refrigerator. The tow truck driver who jumped my van said he can jump twenty cars or vans before it needs to be recharged. They also have a size for the big trucks.
