Thanks mate, I will be doing something very similar now to my mill. Basically stealing your idea. Great work John

In my experience, the R8 collets in the video are not actually being ejected. They are just being released and they fall out due to gravity. I have found that if collets and the spindle are completely free of swarf and lightly oiled they drop out by themselves 99.9% of the time. I think some machines stick regularly because there is swarf impacted on the collet or inner surface of the spindle. That's why the dead blow hammer is used to release them. Great idea and great video. Thanks!

I beleive it may be because some machines use a morse taper rather than r8 my r8 never sticks

You can use indoor vacume tube with an end cap to cover your impact then paint it whatever color after

I have just started building one with a older snap on 3/8" impact 9.6vdc, just came across your video, Thanks for posting it! to lower I was think of a foot pedal and cable. For operating momentary switches. I have bad shoulders and can not reach the draw bar any more.

That is sweeet, no compressor banging away. I have a big 60 gallon tank, sure would hate to listen to it just to run a draw bar, not to mention the 220 sucking money out of my pocket.

@CncObsession I thought about using a power supply but the Amp draw is quite high (20A at full load). For now I just put the battery in the lower cabinet. It lasts a LONG time (going on 3weeks on one charge)

Hi, very nice device. What about the nut which goes around the drawbar? In manual use this nut has to be slacken first to allow drawbar go up, and then we punch drawbar with soft hammer to release arbor) Looks like you use thread of the drawbar to release arbor without slacking holding nut too much - nut is loose enough to allow drawbar to turn (can't be tight - otherwise motor won't turn the drawbar) am I wright?

Hi, what power supply are you using to run the drill. How many amps in the supply? John

Yes, my spindle does not have a keyway. I just grab the spindle by hand and it does not rotate.

this may be a dumb question but how do you keep the spindle from spinning when the impact driver starts torquing the draw bar.

Impact drivers are pretty impressive, they can tighten/loosen very tight nuts/bolts, without actually imparting much spin to the workpiece. I was once removing the clutch basket on my Honda XR250, it's retained by a nut that is torqued to ~60 N*m and gets tighter during normal operation. To remove the nut, you have to hold the clutch from rotating, using a special tool (clutch center holder) or wedging something (e.g. a rag) between two gears. Mine was really tight, I had to push the 1/2" swivel handle with my foot while standing on top of a stool. Rather awkward process. I saw the same process done in a motorbike service shop. The mechanic just puts a shop rag on the clutch outer and holds it with his hand without much effort, then the impact driver takes the nut off with no effort at all.

Hey everyone, I dont visit my own youtube site and browse the comments very often. Sorry. Anyway a few of the questions: xxSTEMMYxx it turns a little bit but I just grab it with my hand, the impact hammers more than applying sustained torque and thus it does not really spin around. Angusinwyoming the Battery was in the lower cabinet, but it is now outside of my enclosure (I have since turned this mill into a full CNC). janeqmx the top cap above the draw bar is "snug" but allows the draw bar to spin freely, just not up and down very much. The threads are pushing the collet's in and out. No signs of any issues over the past few years of constant use. The impact tightens the collet enough that I dont have endmills being pulled out or pushed in. Carlos Silva it is actually a R8 collet

Yes its still going. No issues to date. Only change from the video is an enclosure around the motor as I stated and replaced the battery with a power supply. Zero issues.
