Formerly called Marion Island, Power island is a tiny stretch of land just miles off the coast of Northern Michigan, where Fred and his wife Tina call home five months out of the year. And in those months they are the sole inhabitants of the island, whose land remains uninhabited for the rest of the year.
Locals know Power Island as a place to escape and have fun. Boaters flock to its shores on weekends in the summer to splash around on the sandbar and jump off the infamous wooden dock.
But Fred Tank is here for a very different reason. One that doesn’t involve loud music, large groups, or running water. To him, the island is a different kind of escape. And I wanted to know what that escape was like.
