The only thing i know is that in most cases it is the pressure switch that is at fault but i would check the wires at the switch also. Those switches are located in the pressure line or the rack.

Make sure to replace the reservoir with a new one. The neon srt 4 power steering reservoir has a filter inside that is hard to see. It becomes clogged over years of use. If you re-use the reservoir it will cause a fluid restriction and your new pump will be noisy as hell. You can break/perforate the filter inside the reservoir if you want to re-use the old one, but remember that removing the filter barrier allows dirt into system. You can add an after market filter if you re-use old reservoir with the filter removed or perforated. I found out the hard way and had to puncture the filter in the reservoir now the noise stopped.

Pretty good video overall. But would've liked seeing lit areas below the pump. I liked how you used a cheater pipe to add leverage on those stubborn bolts. Great muscle saving technique. Only thing is the tools. 1 - Fluid siphoning hose and 2 - Pulley wheel puller.

Hello Rich, I noticed that you used a new pulley instead of the one that you removed. Why is that? Did the new pump come with a new pulley? Also, what is up with the make-shift cheater bar for your ratchet and hex key. Do you not have and XL long ratchet for more leverage? I did enjoy the use of the hose clamp pliers. It seems low-tech to use pliers. I would have like to see the actual removal of the bolts of the pump from the car (the ones with the feed-through holes). Great Videos!

Do you need a bench vice to remove the pulley and bolts or does that just make things more convenient?

Very good videos. I keep searching the things that need work on and you keep coming up! Thanks so much. Rear ended a small SUV the other day, my bumper went right under theirs and the hood on the neon pushed right in so gotta figure out all what needs fixing. Just a quick question, I just need to replace the res, is this possible without removing the pulley? Thanks!

You do not have to remove the pulley if you only need to change the reservoir. Look closely at 7:06; it is easy to get to that first screw without taking out the pulley. You only need to take out the pulley if you need to replace the actual power steering pump, like in the video. By the way, the same exact accident happened to me. Now, I am having to change the reservoir.

Thanks...I would have never changed my 2005 dodge sx 2.0 pump without this video. However my pump change didn't solve my PS problem. So I changed the pressure and return lines and still no joy. I then changed the rack and pinion and I am still having a problem with my PS. It is manual steering when I first start it up in the morning and it still makes a noise. Once it warms up the noise is reduced but still doesn't sound correct. There doesn't seem to be any fluid on the ground but for some reason it looks as if air is still getting into the system and sometimes foams the fluid. I changed the pump for the second time because I thought the new one I installed was bad....still didn't work. I just ordered a reservoir for it in case that is the problem. Do you have any ideas as to what is causing my PS issue?

rich pin I changed the O-Ring when I did the first pump change but didn't change it when I put the second pump on...I figured it was new and didn't need to be changed but maybe that was a bad move. When the reservoir comes in and I change that I will also put a new O-Ring on the pressure line going into the pump. Maybe I put it on too tight and crushed the O-Ring. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

spartan45acp I changed the reservoir and put a new O-Ring on the pressure line going into the pump and this morning when I went out to start the car...still no joy. The power steering in the cold mornings is actually manual for the first few turns of the wheel...then the power steering starts to whine and foam up as the wheel starts to turn easier. I am absolutely frustrated with this problem....help...lol. I noticed in your video that when you put the reservoir on the new pump that there was a white plastic ring that was placed into the opening...I did the same...but you said they pump was sent with the wrong O-Ring for that connection. What exactly was wrong with the O-Ring? I used the one that the pump manufacture sent me. Does that O-Ring fit inside that plastic ring or does it sit on top? In my case the white plastic ring went into the pump side and I put the O-Ring around the reservoir end and then put the two together. Is this the proper procedure? Also would a bad belt or belt tensioner cause a problem like the one I am having? The belt doesn't look worn out...no cracks much...it was changed about a 1.5 years ago as routine maintenance. However if you think that might be the problem I would gladly put a new belt on it to see if that solves it but I can't see how that would cause the foam.

spartan45acp The o ring was the wrong diameter which would have not sealed properly. You have to watch rebuilt stuff real closely.

rich pin Back to my mystery. So I then figured maybe it was the cooler so I ran a return line to the rack and pinion bypassing the cooler and put a new belt on for good measure. Still not fixed. This morning I was back to manually steering for a minute and pump whining for 30 minutes. Once everything is hot it seems to work...but it takes some time and a lot of whining from the pump. Even when it stops the whining it still makes some noise that seems odd but the fluid eventually settles down and looks like it is flowing with no foaming after it heats up. Mechanics must have the patience of Job...LOL

My 02 neon squeals during start up for about 5-10 seconds. Does that sound like it could be a power steering pump issue? I know this is not much info but maybe that kind of squeal might be common for the power steering.

If your power steering fluid is black.. Start there .. Change the fluid.. But It could be the rack.. It could be the pump.. It's not likely on these but it can happen... I've had A LOT of success quieting these cars down by just changing the fluid ...

well i haven't had the time to check under the vehicle, but i checked the fluid and it's not black. i know about cars but i don't have the time to do it, plus i don't have a jack or anything to lift it. i'm pretty sure it's rod, or the joints. The sound it's quite like when you open an old metal door that you see on the cartoons, specially the old graveyards metal doors.
