Power Stone is a 3D arena fighting game made by Capcom in 1999, as an arcade game and subsequent SEGA Dreamcast port. It's vastly superior to Super Smash Bros., in my opinion. With a style inspired by anime, the game has notable similarities with Capcom's Rival Schools fighting game series.
All standard characters have a front throw, air throw and rear throw. A good way to get into position for the rear throw is to vault over the opponent, or slide between their legs (depending on the character). This transitional move can be performed as a counter to a strike from the front. The player must press forward immediately after the attack is attempted to perform this escape move.
Galuda, Ayame, Rouge and Kraken can perform a special grab attack when they have been transformed into their more powerful form by the Power Stones.
There are also a few extra throws for certain characters which are context-specific. Wang Tang can perform a leaping flip throw, by pressing the throw command whilst holding onto a column in the stage. Similarly, Ryoma can jump onto his opponent from a column to perform a flip throw. Galuda can perform a powerbomb instead of the usual strike aimed at enemies behind him. He can also perform a body slam, and jumping sit-out powerbomb at the end of two of his combo chains.
The final boss of the game, a giant monster that Valgas transforms into, has one grab move assigned to each of his hands. The position of the opponent will determine which hand they are grabbed by.
Overall, Power Stone has some very nice throw moves, particularly Falcon's inverted spinning piledriver / Izuna Drop, and Galuda's selection of wrestling slams. My only real complaint is that there are only 3 different possible rear throws, which are shared between characters. This is an issue I also noticed in Capcom's Rival Schools series. I would have liked to see more originality here. However, the types of moves that are used are well suited to arena combat, as they send the opponent flying.
Thanks for watching All Throws. Remember to subscribe for more fighting game goodness.
