Wonderful video and content ! May I suggest, on your breadboard to the left of the pin number identification area, you draw a square large enough to display a representation of the pins on the bottom of a 4 or 5 pin relay and label each pin as well. That way I don't have to hold a relay in my hand, to see where each wire connection goes, while watching the awesome relay designs you come up with 🙂

what a fine thing you are doing here. I have an old tractor with a 24 volt starter that used a series/parallel switch(relay/solenoid). I had problems with the switch all the time. It had 2 80-amp aluminum fuses right on the switch which would frequently burn out. The actual switch for the tractor is crazy exspensive for this old Russian tractor. So I am in the process of rewiring it. I am, and always have been scared of wiring. As I dont know how it works, very well. I would pretty much glaze over when trying to deal with it. The more of your videos I watch, the fog is starting to lift. Particularly in this video, as you explain the relay. The way my tractor was set up, you only needed 24 volts to start, everything else is 12 volts. I bought a 70 amp 24 volt alternator and a continuous 4 pin 250amp 24-volt solenoid. I also have a 2000-watt 24-volt inverter(for AC onboard power) that I want in that circuit. The alternator that I bought from Amazon is a DB ELECTRICAL ADR0047, it has 4 posts on it. Post R tests about 13.8 volts, post AT tests about 28.4 volts, post I also tests 28.4 volts, 4th post is ground. I have a 2awg copper strand for this circuit. I am unsure of what fuse to use here? The old setup was an 80 amp, so that is at least a good place to start. The problem is , it would frequently burn out. The engine at the front and, the batteries in the back, so about 7-8' separates the starter and batteries..maybe this is where the current surge on start burns fuses? My thinking here is to use pole AT on the altenator to make a circut for the starter and the inverter. The tractor already has a big heavy ground switch that I would also like to have in this circuit to avoid parasitic drain. Then I would like to use pole R for the accessories...lights, wipers, etc. I would love to send you pictures of my project if I knew how. Any direct help you could give me to achieve my goals would be greatly appreciated.

Great explanation, it confirmed for me that I had my actuator wired correctly. The problem I'm having is the actuator motor housing is getting grounded when mounted to the chassis. It runs in one direction just fine, but will short and blow the fuse when the polarity is reversed. I have tried to create isolators at the mounting points, but it's used for a parking brake, and that only last so long until it grounds its self again. Should the actuator motor be grounded under this scenario, or is there another solution? Thanks

Hello and thank you for your great job. I have a question for you. I am thinking on trying relay way on a smaller 12v motor. This motor is in always falling hot to cold door in a truck duct system. Basically it turns this little door from ac evaporator to heat radiator and back as needed, as most good working units. My concern is on when to stop pushing the on button so I don’t strip a warm gear or brake hinge on that door. Is there any light 💡 indicator could be installed in the wire chain or something that will stop it from damaging itself. If you could make that video that would be very interesting because it’s for cars and trucks , something simple and reliable and thanks again👍

If I can ask my driver master power window switch isn't powering up the motor. I tried 3 different switches from the auto wreckers and none of them work. The power mirror works but it's separate from the window switch. I don't believe there are any breaks in the wiring so is it safe to assume that it is the motor or relay on the motor. All the fuses work and all my other door switches work but the master switch won't open any of the windows.

Amazing video and one that I really needed to watch. I'm working on a project to have a power sliding rear window installed onto my Chevy Silverado 1500 custom. The truck is not equipped with a powered sliding rear window therefore not equipped with a fuse junction block (under the dashboard) that will accommodate the relays and fuse necessary to operate the sliding rear window. So, I'm taking your approach to resolve the issue. However, I have one question, I want to purchase a roof console with a switch and, although the console has power (unable to find a power source on the current console), where do you suggest I should hide the relays and fuses? and knowing I have power at the fuse junction box, can or should I run a wire to the box for power? Or should I just run a wire to the battery. Thank you for a great video; and I am subscribed to your channel.
@WiringRescue
Жыл бұрын
It’s tough to fully understand the whole project without being there, but I’ll try my best: - if you have any room in an existing fuse box and can add an additional circuit to it, that’s the route I’d go. Otherwise I’d probably just run a new wire from the battery to a new small fuse box under the hood (check out the 6-spot one from Leash electronics). Then take power from that fuse box to power your new window motor. - the relays can really go wherever they fit. I’d probably put them in a place where you have to run the least amount of wires to and from them. I’d bet that is in the overhead console or close to the window motor.

@@WiringRescue Thank you Ratty and you answered most of my concerns. I'll be the first to tell you I'm no mechanic or electrician. I did find three live circuits in my driver side fuse junction block/box, but I've still not figured out how to get to the back of it. Please forgive my ignorance but if I'm successful at getting behind the fuse box I should just run a black wire to the live/powered fuse located behind the box? What I'm finding is that I've figured everything out except how to get power to the console. Thanks Ratty and my apologies for asking too many questions.

@@FrankSr1st check to see if your fuse box has some additional male spade connectors on the front side of it. Sometimes, you can just plug a wire with a female spade connector on the end, right into the front of the fuse box. Also - use a red wire, not black if you are running power from the fuse box to the console. :)

7:04 I really wish people would stop calling that a 5 pin relay. It is called a single pole double throw relay or a change over relay. Some relays that have 5 pins are only single pole single throw. FYI your circuit on the left can be simplified further by using a 5 pin window switch. The type that has all the pins in a row. You don't have to do all the criss crossing jumpers like you have to do with a DPDT switch. It is all done internally. Another FYI. On amazon you can find a harness , that is prewired, for this exact thing. Makes it way easier to get done. It is similar to what you have on the right, but instead of having to wire both Positives from relay coils you just wire one. One white in this case. The power for the motor is also prewired to both the 87 pins. So only one red wire for the motor power and one red for the relay coils in your case. Color of wires is different on the harness. Two whites wire 16 AWG out for motor on the 30 pins, Two black wires 16 AWG for the Negative to the motor 87a pins, One red main wire 16 AWG (prejumpered) for the Positive to the motor 87 pins, One red 18 AWG for relays 86 pins, Two 18 AWG wires, green and blue, for the negative of the relay coils 85 pins. I have a short video called "Linear Actuator with 2 timers, 2 bosch style relays, fast and easy to wire up harness." with a link to the harness. Nice video and great work on your demo board. Much better than most.

Hey boss, I found this comment very helpful. I hope you might help with a cpl questions. 1) I'm guessing the relay is a direct line to the battery (white wires here) and the switch (yellow) only receives power when the ignition is on or in the "ACC" position?

@@joshuabrumback9681 "I'm guessing the relay is a direct line to the battery (white wires here)" Yes. That is correct. Power for the window motor will be fused and most of the time it is "direct from the battery". Same head lights that go through the fuse box powered. Or if this is an after market install, a more direct connection to the battery and fuse. "the switch (yellow) only receives power when the ignition is on or in the "ACC" position" Again yes. That is correct. Alternatively they can be wired through an alarm system.

@AztecWarrior69 OK that's a big help. I have a square body k5 blazer with the old 80's toggle window switches. Those didn't come with relays but I'm complicating things even further and I'm replacing each toggle switch with 2 momentary push button switches. I cannot find any step by step instructions but from my understanding the 12v+ and grounds can all be tied together, even the #30 relay pin going out to the motor. Basically everything except the (NO or normally open) from each of the new switches needs to go to separate #85 pins, which activate the relays. So basically all other wires on both relays and both 5 pin button switches are just power and ground except the #30 (to motor) and the #85 (trigger from switch)? Also 86 and 87A are both grounds and can be ground together along with the negative or ground from the motor? I do plan on continuing to use the existing oem 12v+ window wires to power the led's on the new switches as well as the yellow wire we previously covered. I guess what's confusing me is that the existing oem toggle switches currently seem to be wired to direct current not complete a ground circuit. I have diagrams of the oem wiring and how to add relays to the existing toggles. They're not very detailed but the drivers side, which has 2 toggles; 1 for the driver and the other for the passenger windows. In the diagram it shows that 2 toggle switch currently has 6 pins of which the diagram says only 5 are functional. 1 12v+ and the other 4 being up and down for each window. To add the relays it shows only 2 of those 5 existing wires need to be redirected. Those 2 represent the drivers side up and down and go to their own individual 85 on each relay. Making me think the existing wiring is positive triggered. Hell I dunno. There is a video of a guy on yt named sprayway customs wiring a setup like this but if you had the misfortune of watching it, you'd understand why I feel like I need more understanding

@@joshuabrumback9681 "I have diagrams of the oem wiring and how to add relays to the existing toggles." Can you please provide a link to them, so that I can look them over? I will give you this, in general. Both the 87a will get ground. Neg 12 volts Both the 87 will get Pos 12 volts. Either direct from batt though fuse Or some other (not a common thing but there may be reasons) Both the 30 will have the window motor wires This is will depend on how the original wires were set up. The relays themselves may also be a factor (some relays have built in diodes and it is going to matter what direction they are installed) In general it won't matter what the 85 and 85 are wired to. Either could be ground or Positive. What matters is what the trigger is going to. In the electrical industry we call this NPN or PNP. " An NPN device can switch the negative side of the circuit, while a PNP device switches the positive side." (Don't worry about what they are called I am just throwing that information out sorry). An example of an NPN is a door curtesy light switch. Power comes from batt, to fuse box, to the light, splits up and goes to the door switches. When door is open, the switch makes ground. This is the most common way switches work in early model vehicles. Basically almost anything that has a power grounded chassis. So the most common way they are connected is. Batt, fuse box ignition circuit, to relay 85, relay 86 to switch, then to ground. I can make diagrams but I can only link to them on vids I have up. Find one that is titled "Window Switch 5 Pin".

@@joshuabrumback9681 looking at a few forums the motor is a grounded body. Meaning that the body of the motor is the negative. And that means that the two wires going to it are going to both need positive to work. One for up and the other for down. What that means is that if you are going to use relays to get better power to the motors all you need is two 4 pin relays. Or the 87a will not be connected. Both the 87 will get Pos 12 volts. Either direct from batt though fuse Or some other (not a common thing but there may be reasons) Both the 30 will have the window motor wires power to the relays will be Batt, fuse box ignition circuit, to switch, to relay 85, relay 86 to ground.

That's a great explanation of how each set up works. Being a visual learner that helps a ton. I'm adding power windows and locks to a vehicle that didn't originally have them so this is definitely a light in the tunnel 😅.

I have a question. I had to replace window switches in my car. The driver side can also control the passenger side window. Since I used some cheap universal switches (1 power, 2 ground, up and down pins) I can't make it so that both switches could operate the passenger side window, as the driver side switch does nothing and the passenger side only produces motor noises. The switches do work when not connected together though. Can that also be fixed by using relays? If so how would the wiring look like? Do note, I have also tried using diodes as I thought that was a problem, but when I tested this out on just the driver side driver window switch the contact that did not have the diode (say window up) that button did nothing, as if the diode that was on window down pin was preventing it from making a whole circuit.

Do you know what to do with a 5 pin switch? (VW T4) I got the wiring diagram and it's obviously not as easy as positive pin to positive 2 negs to negative and middle 2 pins to the window wires. What am I missing?

Hi Thank for this video. I’m not much of a electrical guy and having issues with the 1993 4runner window wiring harness. Since I couldn’t find any color coded wiring diagram, all I need to know is how is the front right passenger wiring harness connected to the main driver window wiring harness. If splice. Am I able to control the passenger window from driver main window controller? Your help is very well appreciated.

GM places a polymer NTC thermistor inside the motors connector. If current goes too high, it gets hot and opens the circuit. This prevents damage to the motor itself. I can’t speak for other brands of motors. Never took those apart!

when you grab the motor shaft with pliers with it energized preventing it from turning this is known as "Locked Rotor Amps " and this is very bad for the motor since the motor current goes through the roof . Slow blow fuses for the motor should be sized to blow at or only slightly above motor current rating to protect the motor but ride through short duration spikes in motor current above the rating .
