When we went to Komodo, the visitation was quite controlled, and a large dragon was down in a pit a fed a hanging hind quarters of a cow. Visiting the nearby island or Rinca was much different. You ride over in a boat with a little skinny guy about 5'4" armed with nothing more than a stick (not forked, just a bamboo-like cane). We said, "What happens if a dragon comes at us?". He said "I hit him on the nose". That gave us loads of confidence (!). The big 7-8 ft ones were mostly laying around. It's the "small" ones, 4-5 feet, to watch our for. They quick. We heard a story about one that climbed up the stairs of an elevated hut and bit a tourist on the leg while he slept. He was med-evact out and saved before the toxins took him.

Just for context, the average healthy Male's running speed is 8.3 MPH. To make matters worse: if you're being chased by a Komodo and it manages to sink it's teeth into you, you're basically done for. The venom and bacteria in it's mouth is debilitating enough to paralyze a full grown ox in a matter of hours, and the dragon's tracking abilities means it will follow your scent for miles.

I came here twice, being in this place is really like being in Jurassic Park in a movie. The underwater views is wonderful. Komodo dragons are endemic ancient reptile species that have lived since ancient times. The evolution of the Komodo dragon began with the genus Varanus which began to develop between 40 million years ago. Komodo dragons are close relatives of dinosaurs. This is seen from the discovery of fossils from certain types of dinosaurs that show similarity in body structure to the Komodo dragon. Dinosaurs have long been extinct but Komodo dragons still exist today. Komodo is called the last dinosaur in the world. Animals that were once with dinosaurs are known as carnivorous lizards, but they are also cannibal animals because sometimes they prey on their children. Komodo (Varanus komodoensis) is the largest type of lizard. The largest Komodo dragon ever has a length of 3.13 meters and weighs 166 kilograms. Komodo can be found on Komodo Island and surrounding small islands. The original habitat of Komodo can only be found in the Indonesian archipelago and not in other parts of the world.

I've been to Komodo Island in Indonesia & seen these animals up close & they are phenomenal to watch when they hunt & finish the victims off. The fact that their teeth are curved inwards simply means once they latch onto an item of prey, they WON'T let go until they're good & ready to. Besides the venom from the bite itself, a victim can also die from the bacteria in the animals' saliva as it eliminates the body's ability to produce blood clots & the victim dies from "bleeding out", truly an excruciating way to "go" 😣😣😖😖

Komodos are amazing! Just as formidable as any large mammalian predator. Unlike any other modern carnivorous reptile! The only lizard that attacks prey larger than itself, no other living monitor lizard has this ability. One can only imagine what Komodo's giant extinct cousin must of been like, the giant megalania that lived in this area and Australia.

Other Varanids can and have performed impressive feats as well such as preying on larger animals but none are as habitual or adapted to hunting larger game than themselves than the Komodo.
